MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is here to serve all Manitobans and to be a benefit and an asset to our community. The mandate to present concerts and to provide educational programs has been part of the WSO’s history since its inception. The needs of our community have changed over the years, and the population mix of our city has also changed. The WSO, like all of our other community institutions, has worked with energy to provide programs and initiatives that meet the needs of a changing cultural mix in our community. We remain convinced that an orchestra has a vibrant and community building role to play in our times and into the future. The value of the historical body of symphonic work and new creations continues to build on the special capacity that a symphony orchestra has to express and amplify human emotions and ideas. In recent months the WSO’s Diversity Committee has been working on a statement of our particular commitment to reconciliation. The WSO is very aware of the importance and value of Manitoba’s Indigenous history and people. This desire to be of service to the Indigenous population has taken many forms over the years. We have commissioned music by Indigenous composers, performed works by noted Indigenous composers, developed programs that integrate Indigenous performers, bands, soloists, drummers and dancers. We have taken repertoire related to Canada’s Indigenous population to New York’s Carnegie Hall. Recently two WSO CDs with strong Indigenous content and connections have been nominated for and won a Juno award and a Western Canadian Music Award. We have worked with Indigenous ceremonial and award programs and regularly been a partner in televised award programs from Winnipeg and in major festivals such as the WSO’s work with Buffy Sainte-Marie in a televised celebration from The Forks. The WSO’s Sistema Winnipeg program participants include 43 per cent from Indigenous backgrounds. These children are engaged in a daily program of music training and social change. Their musical skills and academic and social skills are transforming as the years go by. Teachers in Sistema schools have indicated that program participants have become leaders in their school. The Diversity Committee in consultation with members of the Indigenous community has been working on a statement of commitment to the reconciliation process in Canada. We are continuing to develop the wording and ideas.

PROGRAM NOTES

On the death of Georg Philipp Telemann in 1767, Emanuel won the honored appointment to replace him as director of music for Hamburg’s city churches, which allowed for a greatly expanded range of musical activities just as his father had done in Leipzig. Many keyboard compositions and chamber works followed, including ten symphonies, and Emanuel became known among Hamburg’s respected elite for his lively personality and generous nature. Bach exemplified the new tonal language called Empfindsamkeit (“Sentimentality”), a direct move from classical rationalism of the earlier age to a new depth of feeling and personal expression. Bach was, as he said, looking to write music “to move the heart”and in so doing, one finds sudden twists and turns, harmonic daring, unusual rhythmic variations and true

Martinuº composed his Oboe Concerto while at Nice in April and May 1955 after having much success with his Sixth Symphony premiered in Boston that January (28 performances in 1955 alone). The Concerto was written for a fellow Czech Jirù’Tancibudek, oboist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Though modern in style, the Oboe Concerto draws on Czech folk roots and traditional musical values. The opening movement aligns itself with the Baroque concerto, the solo weaving among the orchestra in contrasting material, animated and pastoral, that deftly show the instrument’s capabilities. The Andante opens with a songful theme in the orchestra that gives way to a rhapsodic cadenza in the solo with underlying piano. The closing movement is a brilliant showcase for all, with spiky jazz elements supported by Czech flavour for a dance-like finish.

The Four Seasons Antonio Vivaldi b. Venice / March 4, 1678 d. Vienna / July 28, 1741 Composed around 1720 Last WSO performance: 2013; Richard Lee, conductor, with Gwen Hoebig as soloist

The four violin concertos that comprise The Four Seasons come from a collection of 12 concertos published in 1725 under Op. 8 and dedicated to the Bohemian Count Wenzel von Morzin, a distant cousin to Haydn’s future Esterházy patron. Morzin especially enjoyed these four depicting the seasons of the year, so Vivaldi copied anonymous sonnets describing the programmatic action into the scores at the exact descriptive spots. OVERTURE I April – June 2019

Below are Vivaldi’s descriptions with music references: "La primavera" (Spring) I. The Spring has come, joyfully The birds welcome it with merry song And the streams, in the gentle breezes flow forth with sweet murmurs. Now the sky is draped in black. Thunder and lightning announce a storm. When the storm has passed, the little birds return to their harmonious songs.

(the lively opening ritornello theme that returns between the episodes and at the end of the movement) (violin trills) (rising and falling violin phrases) (tremolos, rapid scales) (gently rising violin phrases and long trills)

II. And in the lovely meadow full of flowers, to the gentle rustling of leaves and branches, the goatherd sleeps, his faithful dog at his side. III. To the rustic bagpipes merry sound, nymphs and shepherds dance under the lovely sky when spring appears in all its brilliance. "L'estate" (Summer) I. In the heat of the blazing summer sun, Man and beast languish; the pine tree is scorched. The cuckoo raises his voice Soon, the turtledove and goldfinch join in the song. A gentle breeze blows. But then the North wind battles with its neighbour. And the shepherd weeps‌. as above him the dreaded storm gathers, controlling his fate. II. His weary limbs are roused from rest by his fear of the lightening and fierce thunder, and by the angry swarms of flies and hornets.

(ritornello, drained of energy) (leaps in the solo violin) (leaps and trills in the solo violin) (quick violin triplets) (rushing orchestral scales) (diverting theme in the solo violin & continuo) (forceful orchestral scales and figures)

(cries of grief from the solo violin with quick interjections from the orchestra)

III. Alas, his fears are borne out.Thunder and lightning dominate the sky, bending down the tops of trees and flattening the grain. "L'autunno" (Autumn) I. The peasant celebrates with dance and song the joy of a fine harvest. And filled with Bacchus wine, he ends his pleasure in sleep.

(happy opening ritornello) (inebriated figures in the solo violin alternating with the ritornello) (the solo violin gets slower and slower until the music stops, before ending with the ritornello)

II. Everyone is made to leave dancing and singing. The air is gentle and pleasing, and the season invites everyone to enjoy a delightful sleep. III. At dawn the hunters set out with horns, guns and dogs The hunted animal flees, the hunters follow its tracks. Terrified and exhausted by the great noise of guns and dogs wounded, it tries feebly to escape. But is caught and dies.

(the jumping main theme) (triplet arpeggios in the solo violin) (violent orchestral figures) (flashing solo violin scales with fierce orchestral interjections) April – June 2019 I OVERTURE 25

PROGRAM NOTES Continued from page 25

"L'inverno" (Winter) I. Freezing and shivering in the icy darkness in the severe gusts of a terrible wind, constantly running and stamping one’s feet so chilled, that one’s teeth chatter.

(chilling, almost motionless main theme) (rushing scales and chords in the solo violin) (a repeated note motive alternating with a leaping figure) (tremolo – trembling motive)

II. Spending quiet and happy days by the fire while outside, the rain pours everywhere. III. Walking on the ice with slow steps, walking carefully for fear of falling, then, stepping out boldly, and falling down, going out once again onto the ice, and running boldly until the ice cracks and breaks. Hearing, as they burst forth from their iron gates, the Scirocco, the north wind, and all the winds battling, this is winter, but such joy it brings.

OVERTURE I April – June 2019

(plaintive main theme, solo violin) (slow, steady orchestral chords) (quick scales, then collapsing figures) (steadily up and down the scale; solo violin) (snapping figures) (a smooth melody, richly harmonized) (rushing figurations close the work)

We would like to pay tribute to a very special writer, longtime friend of the WSO and music lover, the late Pierre Meunier, who passed away on March 7th in Cowansville, Quebec. For many years, Pierre served Franco-Manitobans attending our concerts with informed arts reviews in La Liberté – Winnipeg’s leading French language newspaper. Pierre reviewed and wrote in-depth articles not only of our concerts but also those of Winnipeg’s other leading arts organizations. His informed perspective was always appreciated by his many readers. When you enter the Concert Hall for our performances, you would find handouts of our evening’s program notes in French that Pierre provided. Pierre’s deep knowledge of music and enthusiastic writing style always brought his readers closer to the music not just by way of musical facts but through a clear love of our great art. We pay tribute to Pierre, his love of music and his dedication to the WSO in appreciation for all he provided to our audiences over the years.

Our new partnership will allow for the most advanced Sistema Winnipeg students to expand their orchestral experience into a more diverse musical community. With three levels - Youth Strings, Youth Concert Orchestra, and Youth Symphony Orchestra the WYO is open to students between the ages of 8 and 21. Not only is this an incredible opportunity for our Sistema students to be introduced to new conductors and peers, it also contributes to the WYO’s goal to involve the community and bring the joy of classical music to a wider audience. Founded in 1923, the WYO is the oldest youth orchestra in Canada. The aim of the founding partners was to provide young and aspiring musicians from across Manitoba with the opportunity to play music in an orchestral setting. This mission aligns with the Sistema philosophy to promote the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras in order to help children and young people achieve their full potential and create social change in their community.

Playing with the Youth Concert Orchestra under the baton of conductor Andrea Bell, this opportunity has proven to be a welcomed challenge for three of Sistema Winnipeg’s most senior students. Lance Eleazar, violist from Elwick School, appreciates how the orchestra ‘pushes me to become a better musician.’ Ryza Rueda (viola) and Lucas Howard (violin) look forward to their pre-rehearsal Thursday night dinner that sets the stage for a productive night ahead. In December the students played their first concert with WYO, an experience that has them looking forward to the Sounds of Spring Concert on April 9, 2019 at My Church Winnipeg. Sistema Winnipeg can only continue to offer these opportunities to students because of the generosity of our donors. To donate, visit the Sistema web page, or phone Theresa Huscroft at 204-949-3973. Whether it’s improving their grades, enhancing coordination skills for their athletic activities, or to learn the rewarding skill of playing the piano; MYC® is the first key to getting them there.
