Dvorˇák: New World September 26, 27 I 8:00 pm Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Natasha Paremski, piano University of Manitoba Singers, Elroy Friesen, director Copland: Canticle of Freedom Gershwin: Piano Concerto in F Dvorˇák: Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”

Dazzling pianist and favourite symphony Jazz is the tang of musical America and Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F explores that brilliantly, especially when under the dazzling command of Natasha Paremski. Dvorˇák’s evergreen New World Symphony produced a wealth of memorable melody as the composer set out to reveal America’s indigenous folk voice during his time in New York. Aaron Copland’s Canticle of Freedom is an inspired call to the highest ideals of our time…and all time.

Finland’s greatest composer begins our week-long Nordic Festival Jean Sibelius created music that was extraordinarily fluid, epic in character and wonderfully individual. No more so than in his Violin Concerto, regarded among the finest concertos of its kind. The Seventh Symphony ranks with the greatest of Sibelius’ output, while Finlandia has long been an audience favorite for its hearty Finnish nationalism. Former Sigur Rós keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson’s Credo is a serene work that will feature the superb singers of Manitoba’s own Prairie Voices. Nordic Festival details on page 38.

The shimmering tones of Kancheli return Giya Kancheli’s music has been a highlight of our New Music Festivals. Dixi, for mixed chorus and orchestra has been described as “Carmina Burana as re-imagined by Arvo Pärt.” The hushed string pianissimos that emerge from the reverberation of the tumultuous percussion fortissimos and the soft choral lines are hallmarks of Kancheli’s evocative style. Called "one of the most original musical thinkers of the new century" (Alex Ross, The New Yorker), John Luther Adams is a composer whose life and work are deeply rooted in the natural world.

Nikki Chooi

Czech composer Antonin Dvorˇák’s music is known for its wealth of melody – a seemingly inexhaustible fund for which the lovely Violin Concerto is pure testament. Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony displays no less a gift from this beloved composer. It’s full of alluring, heartfelt music that shows his symphonic gifts to be as inspired as his famous works for piano. All will be on display at this first WSO performance with Canadian violinist Nikki Chooi.

Britten’s choral masterpiece - an epic event! Using massive forces of musicians and singers, English composer Benjamin Britten had a message when he composed his War Requiem in 1961: “My subject is War, and the Pity of War. The Poetry is in the Pity…All a poet can do today is warn,” the title page shows in poet Wilfred Owens’s words, on which the work is portrayed. Owens was killed during the last days of World War I. Britten’s War Requiem is among the most powerfully eloquent testaments to Owens’s universal message of peace.

Jack and the Beanstalk March 29 I 2:00 pm Pre-concert Activities I 1:00 pm Julian Pellicano, conductor Dandi Productions

Jack’s story told in gigantic puppetry and music This concert-story, based on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhyme, features a cast of four actors, outrageous puppets and a stunning 60-foot beanstalk, which rises from the stage to the ceiling in a matter of seconds. There's also a cow, a giant and an ambitious boy with a pocket full of beans. But in Dahl's telling of the tale, getting rich depends on getting past that giant's highly developed sense of smell. A wildly entertaining story with plenty of unexpected twists!

Still cool, hip and funny…The Rat Pack defined Las Vegas What happens in Vegas all started with The Rat Pack. This spirited show recreates the times when a swingin’, ring-a-ding group known as “The Rat Pack” was creating hipster legend with a free-wheeling nightclub act starring Vegas’s favourite sons: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin. Uncanny vocal recreations, unbridled humour, and a hot WSO will send you back to the coolest time in history. Hits include That’s Amore, My Way, Mr. Bojangles and many more.

Fabulously gifted pianist returns with Beethoven masterwork Blind since birth, Nobuyuki Tsujii’s star has had a meteoric rise since he won first prize at the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. “You feel God’s presence in the room when he played” the late Van Cliburn himself enthused. Our cheering audience agreed when Nobu made his WSO debut in 2013 so we couldn’t wait to invite him back for Beethoven’s magnificent “Emperor” Concerto. A Program of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra

Changing our World through Music: Play Your Part The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) and its partners in the educational and philanthropic community are excited to be part of an innovative program called Sistema Winnipeg that seeks to affect social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. The mission of Sistema Winnipeg is to promote the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras in order to help children and young people achieve their full potential and create social change in their community. It is an inclusive after-school orchestra program that focuses on children with the fewest resources and greatest need, and is delivered at no cost to participants. Inspired by the successful El Sistema model originating in Venezuela more than 35 years ago, Sistema Winnipeg is in its fourth year with 120 students in Grades 1- 6. In many ways, the orchestra is a reflection of a thriving community. The orchestra focuses on working together, being responsible to others, commitment, mentorship, personal and group responsibility, and more. It can offer students a sense of identity and ownership, as well as a creative outlet.

“Sistema has changed my life. I’ve been getting better on my instrument and I feel like I have a place to belong.” - Viola student in Sistema Winnipeg

Sistema Winnipeg is based on these guiding principles: • Social

Change

• Inclusion

& Accessibility

• Artistic

Excellence

• Teamwork

& Community Building

• Intensity

Your Gift Makes a Difference! With your support, the WSO will continue to enrich our city and community with world-class symphonic music and innovative programs. You can give a tax-deductible donation to Sistema Winnipeg by visiting www.wso.ca.
