Welcome to our 2015-2016 season! As Artistic Director of your Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra every year is special to me, yet this season is particularly meaningful as it marks my 10th season. Yes! Ten absolutely wonderful years with the WSO, the best orchestra in the world, and with you, the best audience in the world. In those ten years my family and I not only got 'used' to the Manitoba lifestyle with its extremes of space, temperature and culture, we fell in love with it and now call it our home. In those ten years the orchestra started a summer season, started El Sistema Winnipeg, performed at the National Arts Center in Ottawa and in Carnegie Hall, recorded several CDs, gave the Manitoba premieres of Mahler Symphonies No. 6 and 7, had meaningful and creative collaborations with the Icelandic community, the Jewish community, the Chinese, Ukrainian, Filipino and First Nations communities, and I got a new podium! Ten years of New Music Festivals: controversial, new, fun. Tchaikovsky, Nordic and now Mahler festivals. Ten years of bringing the best in the classical and popular music scene to Winnipeg, ten years of making music meaningful, emotionally stirring, utterly fun, profound and spiritual. Now, this season, I invite you to hear your critically acclaimed orchestra with some of the most beautiful works ever written. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, Sibelius 5 and Orff’s Carmina Burana. We continue our passion for the big German romantic repertoire with a Mahler festival and his Symphonies No. 2 and 10 (another Manitoba premiere), and the performance of Bruckner Symphony No. 4. The Art of Time Ensemble joins us to reimagine one of The Beatle’s most iconic albums, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, we will play with Rufus Wainwright, Quartetto Gelato returns and we present Disney Fantasia. It will be absolutely thrilling and exciting and I can't wait to conduct for you and celebrate with you in my 10th anniversary season!

At the time of his death Mahler had completed two movements of his Tenth Symphony and sketched the remaining movements. A performing version was made by Deryck Cooke: “a masterpiece of reconstruction,” Neville Cardus wrote in The Guardian “sounding the voice of Mahler and of nobody else.” We are proud to present a WSO premiere, hosted by the eminent writer and Mahler scholar Norman Lebrecht.

The WSO tradition continues, as the special glow of the season comes alive with Handel’s matchless sense of timing and drama, where the music’s memorable path from darkness to light never fails to inspire. Our week-long Mahlerfest, devoted to the life and work of Gustav Mahler, opens with one of his most unforgettable works, the Resurrection Symphony. Mahler tackles the big questions: What is life? Why are we living? What comes next? He answers the quest in his Resurrection Symphony: a life-affirming journey through human joys and travails, with a transcendent finale inviting the start of a new and different life, a life without judgment, where everyone is equal. In the words of Norman Lebrecht: “More than any other symphony Mahler’s Second acquired a mythical dimension, defining the lives of those who embraced it.”

Stravinsky’s Petrushka also features the trumpet in its entertaining narrative of a puppet suddenly endowed with life, enhanced here with screen images depicting the music’s story. Canadian composer John Estacio’s Brio is a cinematic treat and a perfect opener for this evening of vivid and visual music.

Brahms: Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn Mozart: Bassoon Concerto in B-flat major, K. 191 Schumann: Symphony No. 2 in C major

Schumann was also a mentor to Johannes Brahms, calling the young man a genius. He was right. Brahms’ Haydn Variations are a beautifully orchestrated nod to Joseph Haydn, another mentor. Completing the musical “connections” is Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto featuring the WSO’s principal bassoonist Alex Eastley.

Beethoven’s piano concertos place the soloist as a direct protagonist to the orchestra – a role he regularly took himself when performing the five he wrote. We welcome Swiss pianist and 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition winner Louis Schwizgebel to interpret Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Concerto. Just back from Italy, Mendelssohn filled his Fourth Symphony with life-affirming Mediterranean sun and spirit. Bedrˇich Smetana created a powerful expression of Czech national spirit in the set of symphonic poems Má vlast (My Homeland), our opening music, perhaps best known for The Moldau.

To attend one of Steve Bell’s concerts any given evening is to see what it’s like when the gifts of a poet and performer take centre stage. Listen to one of his albums, and you’ll discover a magic and artistry few singer/songwriters possess. These things have drawn audiences around the world to his performances, whether recorded or live. In either setting, his vibrant tenor voice, no less than his mastery of the guitar, shine through. And his peers have taken note. Two Juno Awards are among the many fine marks of recognition he has received in a career spanning more than twenty years. Since 1989, Steve has performed over 1500 concerts to over a half million people in 15 countries.

Each season, the Phil engages members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to offer Winnipeggers a concert of major choral works in all their splendour. In 2016, we will perform Lobgesang, Felix Mendelssohn's glorious, 13-part Symphony No. 2 in B-flat. In addition to this symphony-cantata, the Phil will perform the shorter, beautifully-crafted Missa Brevis by legendary Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodály. Both works feature full orchestra and four top soloists in the exquisite setting of the St Boniface Cathedral.
