Trudy Schroeder We have just recently presented our offerings for our upcoming 2014-15 season. If you have not yet picked up your renewal package or one of the season guides, you can do that at our patron services tables in the front lobby of the Concert Hall. There are so many concerts to look forward to in the coming months, that I predict that your concert selection will be difficult. Personally, I think the Symphony Lover Pass is the most amazing offer available, and I would invite you to think about it the way many people purchase hockey tickets for the season. The Symphony Lover Pass provides you with a ticket for every regular season concert the WSO presents. In fact, if you attend a concert on Friday night and really enjoy it, you can ask for another ticket for Saturday evening, and we will give it to you. If you enjoy the symphony experience, this really is the most marvellous way to hear the whole range of wonderful concerts presented by your Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. If you are busy for one of the evenings, just give the tickets to friends so that they can experience the WSO. If we make it into the playoffs, you will have to purchase additional tickets. No, just a second, there aren’t playoffs in the orchestra world. Every concert is a winner, and with the Symphony Lover Pass, you can immerse yourself in a world of wonderful sounds along with the orchestra. The coming spring also provides opportunities to consider attending two WSO special events. On April 26th join us for a pre-concert Peking inspired feast before the thrilling performance of the Peking Acrobats. This event is a joint venture with the Chinese Cultural Community Centre and proceeds of the event will be shared by the two organizations. Also, as you think of Mother’s Day gifts, consider joining the WSO for our annual Garden Tour on June 21, 2014 and the Music and Magic Garden Soiree on June 25th. Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly), “fearless” approach and “first-rate technique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinary command over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011). Following on from his tenure as Assistant Conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which he completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his eighth season as Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developed the orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programming initiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen to perform at the Carnegie Hall Spring for Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creative and innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra is the only Canadian ensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival and Indigenous Festival, Alexander lead the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting master-classes, the New Music Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of the Centennial Concert Hall. Always looking for a fresh approach and creative ways of crossing musical genres, Alexander has collaborated with Iceland’s Bedroom Community, Wayne Shorter, Mark O’Connor, Belle and Sebastian, Jason Alexander, DJ P-Love, Canadian bands Waking Eyes, Liptonians and Dukhs. Alexander has conducted for the Queen of England, for former President Jimmy Carter, and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

Julian Pellicano, Resident Conductor Conductor Julian Pellicano has recently made his New York debut at Carnegie Hall performing with pianist Boris Berman and members of the Yale Philharmonia, he conducted premiere performances of a new opera by Martin Bresnick at the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, and made his South American debut with the Orquestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre (Brazil). Other recent appearances include concerts with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony, and Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble. From 2009 - 2013, Julian served as Music Director of the Longy Conservatory Orchestra in Cambridge, MA (USA). At the Yale School of Music, Pellicano was Assistant Conductor of the Yale Philharmonia, assisting Music Director Shinik Hahm as well as guest conductors Sir Neville Marriner, Helmuth Rilling, Reinbert de Leeuw and Peter Oundjian. Recognized for his work with living composers and transparent interpretations of contemporary works, Julian has premiered over 40 new pieces and as an artist-in-residence at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival he conducts the Norfolk New Music Ensemble. He has worked in masterclasses with Kurt Masur, Peter Eötvös, Zsolt Nagy, Martyn Brabbins, Carl St. Clair, L’Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He holds degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music (Stockholm), and the Yale School of Music where he was awarded the 2008 Presser Music Award and the Philip F. Nelson Award.

Violin Concerto
Felix Mendelssohn b. Hamburg / February 3, 1809 d. Leipzig / November 4, 1847 Composed: 1844 First performance: March 13, 1845 (Leipzig), conducted by Niels Gade with Ferdinand David as soloist Last WSO performance: 2006; Susanne Hou, violin; Gregory Vajda, conductor The muse hit Mendelssohn hard in 1838, in the guise of a violin concerto. Writing to his friend, the violinist Ferdinand David, Mendelssohn declared “One in E minor keeps running through my head, and the opening gives me no peace.”
The elegance, musical insight and technical brilliance of David’s playing had long entranced Mendelssohn. So it was natural that he would dedicate the new concerto to his gifted friend, who Mendelssohn had known since his mid-teens. When Mendelssohn became music director of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1835, he appointed David concertmaster where he spent 37 years, once stepping in when Mendelssohn was too ill to conduct the premiere of the composer’s oratorio St. Paul. Mendelssohn’s life was an activity trap full of performances, directorships and travel. He didn’t get around to serious work on the Violin Concerto until 1844. Working closely with David on matters of violin technique in the piece, the two wanted a solo part that “could be executed with the greatest delicacy.” Moreover, since both men had low opinions of the showy display-pieces of the early Romantic era, they wanted the new concerto to be a serious musical essay and one that could be a companion to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto.
The result was a work of enduring popularity, prompting the great violinist Jascha Heifetz to say that it “is always retired at the end of one season, and revived at the beginning of the next.” Right from the soaring opening phrase, so tinged with melancholy, the Concerto burns itself into the memory with its richness of melody. The second theme is a quiet and happy partnership between soloist and woodwinds. The cadenza – thought to be by Ferdinand David himself – separates the development from the recapitulation that ends the movement in a flourish, followed by a solo bassoon carrying forward into the serenely songful Andante movement. As challenging for the orchestra as for the soloist, the finale is sheer virtuosic éclat, in an aerated musical high-wire act whose delicacy and velocity are hallmarks of Mendelssohn’s style.
Symphony No. 4

Vienna / May 18, 1911 Composed: 1899-1900 First performance: November 11, 1901 (Munich), conducted the composer Last WSO performance: 1990; Henriette Schellenberg, soprano; Bramwell Tovey, conductor Mahler self-professed that he wanted his symphonies to be “worlds” where a wide variety of emotional states would be woven together to depict his mindsets. In the first four symphonies, these regularly stand next to each other – marches flanking evocations of love, drinking songs next to spiritual quests, peasant dances alongside complex musical structures. In fact, his whole body of symphonies can be seen overall as one similarly cosmic world where, in the words of his friend and champion, conductor Bruno Walter, “the force of spiritual events is matched by the power of musical imagination” in the often stormy questions, speculations and
resolutions of existence Mahler wrestled with. “In the Fourth,” Walter wrote “he assures himself and us of a sheltered security in the sublime and serene dream of a heavenly life.” Child-like simplicity lies at the heart of this lovely work, the most modest in length and orchestral forces (no trombones or tuba). Mahler actually composed the Fourth backwards, the entire work derived from the enchanting song in its last movement - “The Heavenly Life” from the cycle of early 19th-century German folkpoems Des Knaben Wunderhorn (“The Youth’s Magic Horn”). Mahler had been thinking about this song for a long time and used it in his Third Symphony. He focused the entire thematic material of the Fourth Symphony on it. The simplicity of the song’s strophic design, the chorale-like refrain ending each stanza, the images of idealized country life in the text and the gently evocative musical underpinnings with references of material previously heard all make for a beguiling experience in the Fourth. In retrospect then, the first three movements could be defined as a heavenly life on Earth, the last movement its ultimate fulfillment. Introduced by sleigh bells, the first movement is touchingly human in its cheerfulness. In the second movement Death rears its head, dancing over the strains of an out-of-tune violin perhaps intentionally naïve so that we view Death from a child’s perspective. The serene third movement is a beautiful painting of St Ursula, in variation form marked by alternating string and wind sonorities. Only a pause, for a child-sized breath, separates the Third movement from the finale. “Unless you become like children you will not enter God’s realm” critic Max Kalkbeck wrote following the Vienna premiere in January 1902. The longing for simplicity is the Fourth Symphony’s calling card, which Mahler never more perfectly revealed.

Changing our World through Music: Play Your Part The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) and its partners in the educational and philanthropic community are excited to be part of an innovative program called Sistema Winnipeg that seeks to affect social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. The mission of Sistema Winnipeg is to promote the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras in order to help children and young people achieve their full potential and create social change in their community. It is an inclusive after-school orchestra program that focuses on children with the fewest resources and greatest need, and is delivered at no cost to participants. Inspired by the successful El Sistema model originating in Venezuela more than 35 years ago, Sistema Winnipeg is in its fourth year with 120 students in Grades 1- 6. In many ways, the orchestra is a reflection of a thriving community. The orchestra focuses on working together, being responsible to others, commitment, mentorship, personal and group responsibility, and more. It can offer students a sense of identity and ownership, as well as a creative outlet.

Since 1990, Mark Cameron has been a percussionist for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, where the kids have always called him “Mr. Mark.” He has composed music for many dances featured at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School events including First Steps, Ballet in The Park and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School’s Connections Tour in 2009. Mark has been performing as “Mr. Mark” since 2002. He has performed numerous times with the WSO and The Winnipeg International Children’s Festival. He was featured in the live version of the television show, The Toy Castle and has entertained for families and kids at numerous festivals across Canada and the United States. For the last ten years Mr. Mark has also has been a very popular artist with Manitoba Arts Council’s Artist in the Schools Program, where he conducts a “found sound” workshop, entitled, All The World’s A Drum!
Pictures at an Exhibition Beyond the Score® MARCH 1 Derek Morphy Born in England and educated in Wales, Derek Morphy sang as a Choral Scholar in the chapel at St. John’s College, Cambridge, and has sung in a number of chamber choirs in England and Canada. He is still active as a bass soloist, having most recently appeared as a soloist in the Camerata Nova performance of the Vespers of 1610 by Claudio Monteverdi, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra performance of Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins and Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy with the Winnipeg Singers. Derek Morphy retired in 2000 after a thirty-seven-year career teaching choral
Madeline’s passion for piano music recently culminated in a Master of Piano Performance from UBC under the tutelage of distinguished Canadian pianist, Jane Coop. Previously she earned a performance degree with Judy Kehler Siebert at U of M, where she received the Millennium Scholarship. The opportunities afforded her have been many and exhilarating, including the prestigious Doris McLellan first prize for solo performance with the WSO in 2012. Madeline has been awarded scholarships to study with such luminaries as Andre Laplante, John Perry and Gilbert Kalish through Orford, Banff, Icicle Creek and Kneisel Hall, Maine. Besides performances at home and on the west coast, highlights have included the 2013 E-gré national competition, premieres at Manitoba’s Cluster festival, collaborations with Randolph Peters, a House Concert Series across the prairies, the Eastern European Cultural Festival in Romania and accompanying Canada’s National Youth Choir.
James Manishen James Manishen is a longstanding figure in Manitoba’s music community. He was a member of the WSO as a clarinettist from 1966 to 1969 and holds a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He was the classical music columnist for the Winnipeg Free Press and CBC broadcaster; hosting his own national radio show and appearing on many other music shows as host, writer, and commentator. As a writer, he has been published in every major Canadian music journal plus international journals Gramophone, Stereo Review and others. As an adjudicator, he has judged the Canadian Music Competitions, the JUNO awards and many others. February – March 2014 | OVERTURE 19

Jennifer Parr Jennifer is delighted to be returning to work with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as Production Stage Director for Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition Beyond the Score®, having worked with the WSO in 2013 and 2012. Jennifer has also been the Production Stage Director for other Beyond the Score productions: Dvorák ‘From the New World’ with the Montreal Symphony, Tchaikovsky à l’heure de multimédia and Il Était une Fois Elgar with l’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, as well as BTS: The Rite of Spring, The Miraculous Mandarin and Tchaikovsky 4 with the Toronto Symphony. With a Master’s Degree in English and European Renaissance Drama from the University of Warwick, Jennifer is also a theatre director, whose productions have ranged from world premieres of new works to medieval and Elizabethan classics.

Debbie Gravitte Debbie Gravitte has found herself in demand from the Broadway stage to the concert stage and beyond. She won the prestigious Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in Jerome Robbins’s Broadway, along with a Drama Desk Award Nomination and New York Showstopper Award. After making her Broadway debut in the original cast of They’re Playing Our Song, she went on to appear in Perfectly Frank, Blues in the Night, Ain’t Broadway Grand, Zorba, Chicago and Les Misérables. Debbie has appeared in the Encore’s series productions of The Boys from Syracuse, Tenderloin and Carnival at New York’s City Center. Debbie has sung with the New York City Ballet in Peter Martin’s Thou Swell at Lincoln Center, appeared with Bette Midler in Isn’t She Great? and can be heard as one of the voices in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Monica Huisman Monica has been hailed as possessing a soprano voice that “embodies both flawless technique and dramatic impact.” In 1999, she made her debut at the famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in a live broadcast of Riccardo Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini. Since then, Monica has delighted audiences from Amsterdam to Guatemala City with the reputation of her “silken” voice “consistently crafting each note into a work of art” (Winnipeg Free Press). She has soared on the stages of Vancouver Opera, Calgary Opera, Edmonton Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, The Netherlands Opera, Manitoba Opera, Opera Ontario and Saskatoon Opera in signature roles such as Musetta in La Boheme “whose silken voice and fine stage sense belong in the show-stealing category” (Vancouver Sun), Micaela in Carmen, Pamina in Magic Flute, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, and the Fox in Cunning Little Vixen. Recent engagements include a return to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam featuring Smetana’s the Bartered Bride, as well as ‘singing it like it was her native tongue’ and absolutely ‘mesmerizing’ the audience in Villa Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras in RICE International Festival in Rio di Janeiro. Upcoming engagements include Vaughn Williams’s Sea Symphony with the Saskatoon Symphony as well as Schubert’s Lobegesang with the Vancouver Symphony.
Manitoba Rocks! MARCH 28-30 Matt Schellenberg Born into the bustling metropolis of Kleefeld, Manitoba, home to four streets and one bay, Matthew Schellenberg moved to Winnipeg so that he would be able to buy a Slurpee whenever he wanted. As a young adult, his house on Lipton Street gave birth to a group called The Liptonians, who won a Western Canadian Music Award for Best Pop Recording in 2008. The band toured the country extensively and had their songs arranged to be performed with the WSO in 2011. As a result of this concert a relationship was born and Schellenberg has been involved in planning, hosting and curating events with the WSO ever since. Schellenberg’s latest musical collective, Royal Canoe, recently inked a management contact with Nettwerk Music and booking agency agreements with Red Ryder in the USA and LOUD Booking in France.
Imaginary Cities Imaginary Cities was born in a Winnipeg club called The Cavern, in between sets. This new group, founded in a chance meeting, is fast becoming one of the world’s brightest new bands. Their debut album, Temporary Resident, is being released across the globe on various labels (Hidden Pony, Grand Hotel Van Cleef and Shock) this year. Imaginary Cities is the musical duo Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas. Marti had moved to Winnipeg from Brandon, Manitoba and was playing in a Motown cover band called The Solutions, for which Rusty did some mixing. Rusty is no stranger to the Canadian music scene either. His former band The Waking Eyes was signed to Warner Records, and toured as the multi-instrumentalist in The Weakerthans.

A rtist bios The Lytics In hip-hop, as in life, there are few things more important than family. And no one embodies the bonds of brotherhood better than The Lytics, the five-man Winnipeg crew whose bid for genre supremacy has long been a family affair. Brothers Andrew and Anthony Sannie have been trading rhymes together since childhood — as has cousin Mungala Londe, who moved in with the family as a teen. The beats come courtesy of big brother Alex Sannie, while newly “adopted” brother DJ Lonnie Ce has plenty of practice whipping dance floors into a frenzy. Proudly committed to making music “real people” can relate to, The Lytics promote the same brand of street-level optimism espoused by early influences Mos Def, The Pharcyde, and A Tribe Called Quest. Their live shows, in particular, are straight-up life-affirming affairs, during which the group’s easy beats and infectious enthusiasm can win over the most hardened of cynics.
Royal Canoe Royal Canoe is a group of musicians on a mission to construct ambitious, inventive music. The songs are thick with catchiness, rich in rhythm and are consistently pushing against the boundaries of pop music. They spend almost every day in a rehearsal space writing hooks, singing through effects pedals, scrawling lyrics on scraps of paper and constructing heavy beats in odd time signatures. They create samples by running conventional sounds through unconventional pieces of gear, drumming on bathtubs and garbage cans, listening to Big Boi and manipulating bits of old records. The band calls Winnipeg home - the enigmatic prairie city, which has served artists as both an abundant, creative watering hole and a debilitating quagmire. Royal Canoe released their EP, Extended Play, on February 21. 24 OVERTURE | February – March 2014
Nathan Music Co. Like an unexpected counter melody in a barroom waltz, Winnipeg alternative roots band Nathan has never been afraid to surprise. They did it in 2001 when original members Keri Latimer, Shelley Marshall and Devin Latimer scraped together nickels and dimes to record their first album, the off-balance pop gem Stranger. They did it again in 2004 by asking Damon Mitchell, front man of combustible blues outfit New Meanies, to surrender his fiery guitar licks for sublime drum beats. They did it to themselves by shaking hands with Nettwerk, touring through well-worn tires and wellworn relationships and recording a pair of nationally and internationally recognized albums, including the JUNO Award-winning Key Principles in 2007. And now they’re doing it again by stirring fellow Winnipeg musician and songwriter Michael Marshall (aka “Mike Trike”) into a brand new musical cocktail. They even have a new name. On The Road To Carnegie H all with Jan Kocman, P rincipal Flute Jan’s been on route to Carnegie Hall since he was 8-years-old, and with a father who taught flute and oboe he found many opportunities to practice, practice, practice growing up. There were always instruments in the house, but he wanted a flute of his own so he wouldn’t have to share with his siblings. So, he placed a want ad in the children’s section of his town’s community paper for a flute for $50 or less. A few days later, he picked up his first flute for no more than $50. Jan now plays a Verne Q. Powell flute handcrafted in 15kt rose gold by Mr. Powell.
From grade school to high school, he played “There’s a sense of great history and heritage,” flute, oboe, piccolo, saxophone, piano, violin, and even sang in choirs, but he always says WSO principal flutist Jan Kocman of gravitated back to the flute. He decided to the fabled Carnegie Hall in New York City. pursue this instrument professionally as he entered his first year of university. For Jan, this May will be his second performance at Carnegie with the WSO.
