STOLEN SPACE : DATONG OFFICE
__________________________ interior | 2012 luban road, shanghai principal : Koon Wee, Darren Zhou Albert Sugiharto, Chris Zhou content + ideas, overall design, CD set, off site coordination
The rather unusual location of this office within a typical Chinese podium- tower complex was the starting point of the project. The intersection point of the residential and commercial sections of this tower is a roof top garden surrounded by what is essentially “stolen space” – dead spaces rented out to offices that have no commercial presence or representation anywhere else in the complex.
construction progress
A tube extends from the interior into the common corridor, essentially gaining (stealing) square footage for the small office, while transforming to an outdoor seating area, and screen to block out the unsightly vista across the street.
These interests in “stolen useless spaces, and partitioning are manifest in the design, which comprises an open-office space, utility space, and a conference room. Made out of wood, salvaged bamboo flooring and cork, the tube divides the office into a raised meeting room that also houses the office library, the toilet/pantry area, and the general workspace. Cuts are tectonically sliced into this tube to allow for circulation and communication, thereby expanding the sense of space within the relatively small interior

The site was the 60 % former factories with beautiful abandoned structure. The clients wanted new development in the other side with a great connection to the post production offices and artists space in the old site. Integrating commercial, residential, lifestyle, offices, film production, and creative artist program with self-supporting form is contemporary architecture application.

English First, the biggest educational center wants a set of interior design can be applied to another English Town in the future. As starting point at Ningbo, partition study enhanced learning efficiency by manipulating surfaces, unifying the visual to give an attractive and strong brand image, creating juxtaposition of flows to generate different rhythm, and integrating the programs to give desirable image of the center.

PRESENCE FETISHIZATION : BOROBUDUR ARCHAELOGICAL MUSEUM __________________________ undergrad final project | 2011 borobudur, magelang supervisor Widjaja Martokusumo
-1st Runner-Up Indonesian Best Final Project -The Most Favorite Architecture Final Project
The brief of this project is to design the new archaeological museum around the huge complex of Borobudur Temple Tourism Park, the site is 250 meters away from the temple center.
The most essential case in designing this museum is “Borobudur Temple as the main collection”. In the other hand, the new building should bring the temple as a glorious thing to notice. As a complement, which means ‘to see the objects seen‘ (presence fetishization), geometry of this building emphasized for viewing the Temple.

Another philosophy: Human as the most intrinsic culture artifacts, those original Borobudur carvers ancestry who are still carving these days, is the reason why UNESCO claimed Borobudur as a culture heritage. Those two principal concepts emerge the idea to create building with dialogue to the Temple,
moreover grows into a place that can develop local carvings from villagers. In addition, Merapi Mountain eruption issue that threaten this region also a consideration to provide an evacuation space called “Gua Selo (Selo Cave) in Javanese, in case the eruption comes again in the future.

soild-void
Building mass formed as a triangle-shaped site response at the visitor path intersection and attempts to catch visitors from or/and to any directions. Therefore circle form is the focal point of the site planning. Solid and void mass give distinction between museum and non-museum function as well as their privacy requirement. These masses were placed in parallel with Jalur Balaputradewa (Balaputradewa lane), a Buddhist straight lane that links three temples (Mendut-Pawon-Borobudur) that split 3 kilometers away. This basic line transforms into an expansion grid for museum in the future as follows ongoing artifacts excavation.
The structure method was truly a big issue, since it was built the the archaeological site area. Minimum footprint, cantilever, with frame structure system supported by waffle flooring were managed to escalate distance between columns.

The interior design approach also mention about this Balaputradewa lane, a straight circulation from lobby (Mendut), then to the tight museum entrance (Pawon, ‘door’ in Javanese), and ended up to the viewing deck to real main Temple (Borobudur). Installations represent the feeling such as or how tough was the carving, or how messy Borobudur when it was invented. Big openings are provided in the south west side surface, where the Temple stands. ground plan

The long-shaped site with very narrow face was the main concern of the project. Furthermore, the existing trees in the front and back of site became the design manifestation. The concept is to connect them as a Green Network, that can even goes through building. This continuous network functions are to brings the goodness of ‘green’ into the entire site as well as orientates visitor

Background, setback, and its single form are strengthen the site character, even though only a piece of building can be seen from the street. In addition, wood lattices cover all vertical partition to manage and maximize the view within the site.
The strategy creates accent and persuasive triangle shape that comes after the setback park. This triangle was inspired by those existing houses along Dago Road: art deco tropical style.
The site also affects the program. It is true that the more deep, the more the privacy. Started with persuasive patches attraction as a representation of tea field, the green leads visitor to the gallery that ended up with a social courtyard and amphitheater, and offices afterward.

the green network transforms not only into patches, but also horizontal core and sectionally split the programs into rooms that determine the visitor flows, which runs opposite direction. this connectivity style gives a strong identity and experience within the site
REINTERPRETS BETWEENNESS : BRAGA CULTURAL CENTER __________________________ 4th year studio | 2010 bandung, indonesia supervisor Fashridjal Noor
Through programming study, building mass maximize the height to minimize its foot print in order to create open space as large as can be. New center axes was made by the projection of Majestic’s symmetric line to the site as a heritage appreciation.
As people know, Braga Street is a heritage district complete with colonial architecture character facing along the street line. Even though Asia-African Conference Museum was built in the south part of Braga, people more likely to go to northern part, which has more commercial and cultural atmosphere. The next official cultural center designed to attracts visitor, furthermore gaining those who come to the Museum and Majestic Building (youth event space) at its opposite.
With Gestolen Westerse Zakenbow architecture principals and Sundanese traditional character, the new building born as a “Rebirth” concept. Rotated by 90o, showing ‘back side’ of Braga which cannot be seen anywhere else on the entire street. 3rd floor plan

The dialogue between the old and the new function is not only the aesthetic, like how the flagpoles from museum has been projected to the building façade, but also the space that gives articulation to the old building next to it. The gap transformed to be a shared open space for Museum, Majestic and cultural center, it also creating a viewing distance, both to Kimia Farma and to the Cultural Center.

HYBRID GREENWICH METROPOLIS TOWER PODS : GREENWICH __________________________
Scenographic: building as “fashion runaway”: The location of this project was at the hottest district in New York, Lower Manhattan. As the title of fashion barometer and world trend-setter, the strategy attempts to show “outstandingness” of the tower. Different approach by unit distinction which later named “pod” has been done after demographics, environment, and behaviour study that show extremely high diversity around Lower Manhattan. These pods reflect the character of those who live inside as well as its massive grows, so that, the building façade will contain of thousands language and it becomes truly iconic.

In order to provide the maximum view from and to each pods, the X shape was proposed after ‘to see and to be seen’ theory raised from fashion concept, and supported by sun-shading study.
Passive Design: collecting sunlight in every pod
Greenscaping: reconnect the ‘nature’ and the ‘place’ by integrate the gap between Battery Park and the tower as a “green catwalk”, attractive connector public space, furthermore this green extension connected the park to the tower podium, where the public activities happen.
This also manipulated the building as united-twin-tower which mentioned to the former World Trade Center not far behind it.

After authorities launched the Suzhou Creek Rehabilitation Project in 1998, the water quality and living standard in the desolated areas along Suzhou River is improved. They also mitigate flood impact and introduce wastewater and water resource management for urban revitalization. These points create the possibility that this area can live in independent system, by increasing symbiotic mutualism between human and nature. Meanwhile, without concrete connotation, the large loose dynamic event space conceptually fragmanted and fluid at the same time, occupied various needs, desires, and action.

The initial step to create indepentent system is how to exploit the river without intervene the river itself. The solution is to create a “sub-new river” as connectivity between wetland lakes. This “sub-new river” serves as a wetland used for phytoremediation, and each “lake” can provide clean water for 2000 people in building.
