The Writers’ Exchange gets inner-city kids excited about reading and writing through mentoring and creative writing projects like this chapbook. I want to be a basketball player. I want to be a basketball player because it is fun. And I would like to be on a team. And I like to run. I would get to play with a basketball. I would get to play games. And I would get to score points. I would get to wear a uniform and get to dribble. 2

I would like to be a nurse. I would like to be a nurse because I want to give babies medicine. I like to help people. I would use a stethoscope to listen to hearts. I would give shots. Nurses give babies medicine. Nurses give big kids medicine. Nurses work in the hospital.

I want to be a teacher. I want to be a teacher because I would get to say when playtime is over. I want to brush my teeth. I want to go to school and teach kids how to draw. I want to say, “Good morning.� 4

I want to be a firefighter. I want to be a firefighter because I want to put out fires. I want to climb ladders. I would get to save people and open the door. I would like to climb ladders with a hose. I could use a crowbar. 5

I want to be a scientist when I grow up. I want to be a scientist because I can make discoveries like different kinds of rocks. I will make water and other molecules. I will make experiments and solutions and look through microscopes. 6


police officer By Carson

I want to be a police officer. I want to be a police officer because it’s fun and I want to fight bad guys. I can catch bad guys. Police officers are good guys.

I want to be a dentist. I want to be a dentist because I like teeth. I want to help grownups and give nice smiles. I want to help people be healthy. Dentists use a drill and numbing needles and check your teeth for cavities.

I want to be a pharmacist. I want to be a pharmacist because I want to help people. I would sell a lot of medicine. Pharmacists have fun.

I want to be a pilot. I want to be a pilot because I want to look at other places. I would drive airplanes. That would be my job. I would know where we are going. I wouldn’t wear pajamas. I would wear a suit. Pilots drive high.

I want to be a scientist. I want to be a scientist because it’s cool. I would make experiments every day. They have a lab.

I want to be an invisible spy. I want to be a spy because no one could see me. I will help find people and help when they get hurt. I will sneak up on people and I will wear regular clothes. 12

I want to be a teacher. I want to be a teacher because it’s fun. I would teach math. I would teach kids. Teachers are nice. 13

I want to be a soccer player. I want to be a soccer player because I like to kick the soccer ball.

I want to be a farmer. I want to be a farmer because I like animals. I would plant food. Farmers like to go outside.

I want to be a doctor. I want to be a doctor because they have lollipops. I would give people shots so they stay healthy.

I want to be a basketball player because you get plenty of exercise and you run a lot for your body and of course I am the fastest. You run and shoot in the net and get a goal, and the more you shoot, the better you get. There is only one tool for a basketball player, just a basketball.

I want to be a teacher. I want to be a teacher because it’s fun. I like books. Teachers read books. They work. They use a calendar. 20

I want to be a pilot. I want to be a pilot because I like to drive. I would keep people safe. Pilots drive airplanes to Canada. I will wear a white pilot shirt. 21


dentist By Nhien

I want to be a dentist. I want to be a dentist because it’s easy. I like to help. I would pull teeth. I would clean teeth. Dentists poke teeth.

I would like to be a nurse. I want to be a nurse because I want to give babies shots and medicine and give the people Band-Aids. I would use a stethoscope to listen to a heart. Nurses help people get better. They help all different people.

I want to be a farmer. I want to be a farmer because they grow pets and take care of animals. It’s fun. Farmers grow fresh fruit. 24
