Wystawa najnowszej sztuki mediów z Japonii została przygotowana w formie ścieżki prowadzącej przez kilka lokalizacji 18. Biennale Sztuki Mediów WRO 2019 CZYNNIK LUDZKI / HUMAN ASPECT. Łączy aktualnie prezentowane prace ze śladami wcześniejszych projektów, zrealizowanych wspólnie z japońskimi artystami, które udostępniamy publiczności w Czytelni Mediów Centrum Sztuki WRO oraz za pośrednictwem naszych internetowych archiwów.

Przypadek sprawił, że czas pomiędzy pierwszą edycją festiwalu WRO i jego aktualnym, osiemnastym wydaniem, pokrywa się z systemem okresów w historii Japonii. Gdy we Wrocławiu w 1989 roku startował Festiwal Wizualnych Realizacji Okołomuzycznych WRO, w Japonii zaczynała się era Heisei. I choć sztuka nie poddaje się systemowym rygorom, przebiegając własnym, asynchronicznym wobec zadeklarowanych epok torem, nowa era, na początku której odbywa się aktualna wystawa, oznacza dla WRO nową jakość współpracy z japońskimi partnerami, takimi jak Japan Foundation czy triennale SIAF 2020 w Sapporo.

Japońscy artyści, kuratorzy, obserwatorzy i organizatorzy są od wielu lat aktywnymi uczestnikami wydarzeń artystycznych organizowanych przez WRO. Wśród prac wybieranych do prezentacji z otwartego naboru zawsze znajdowały się dzieła z Japonii. Od początku łączyła nas również współpraca programowa, a jej pierwszym przejawem była obecność wybitnego artysty Takahiko Iimury w międzynarodowym jury WRO ’90.

Prezentacja eksperymentalnej animacji Digital Japan była w 2003 roku pierwszą kompleksową wystawą przygotowaną przez WRO we współpracy z japońskimi organizatorami – kuratorami konkursu Digista.

Wystawa zrealizowana dzięki grantowi od Japan Foundation i zaprezentowana w Muzeum Architektury we Wrocławiu oraz Centrum Sztuki

i Technologii Japońskiej Manghha w Krakowie, ukazywała specyficzny wymiar japońskiej kultury medialnej, w której eksperymentalna sztuka ruchomego obrazu łączy się z popularną rozrywką telewizyjną.

Kolejne, pogłębione kontakty i wymiany manifestowały się m.in. w formie takich projektów, jak Japanese Perspective Now! (Biennale WRO 2011) czy Reversible // Irreversible // Presence – rocznego cyklu wystaw i prezentacji, realizowanego w kontekście programu Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury Wrocław 2016 i Biennale Sztuki Mediów WRO 2017, domkniętego indywidualną wystawą prezentującą najnowsze instalacje programistyczne Norimichiego Hirakawy.

Specjalna prezentacja japońskiej sztuki mediów na Biennale WRO 2019 CZYNNIK LUDZKI / HUMAN ASPECT jest dotąd najobszerniejszą, jak miała miejsce w ramach tego przeglądu najnowszej sztuki z całego świata. Publiczności Biennale prezentujemy 15 prac – instalacji, animacji, wideo, performansów audiowizualnych – grup twórczych i indywidualnych artystów z Japonii. Gośćmi-obserwatorami WRO była także spora grupa japońskich kuratorów, organizatorów i artystów, przybyła zarówno z Japonii, jak i z Europy, aktywnie uczestnicząca w wydarzeniach otwarcia. Na specjalną wzmiankę zasługuje tegoroczna programowa współpraca WRO z nowymi partnerami – Centrum Sztuki i Mediów w Yamaguchi YCAM oraz grupą ARTSAT x SIAFLab z Sapporo, z którymi zrealizowaliśmy oryginalne, wrocławskie wersje ich kompleksowych projektów odnoszących się do przeszłości (Reinkarnacja sztuki mediów) i przyszłości sztuki mediów (Space Moere Project).

Japońska ścieżka podczas wydarzeń otwarcia prowadziła przez miejsca Biennale, w których japońskie prace prezentowane były w kontekście dzieł artystek i artystów z całego świata – performansów, eksperymentalnych działań na żywo i dyskusji o nowej sztuce.

Wielopostaciowa dokumentacja tych działań stanowi część katalogu, także sieciowego. Japońskie prace i działania znajdowały się w czterech lokalizacjach, najdłużej można je oglądać na dwóch głównych wystawach Biennale WRO 2019 – w Pawilonie Czterech Kopuł i w Centrum Sztuki WRO. Działania programowe pod hasłem CZYNNIK LUDZKI, także z udziałem artystek i artystów z Japonii, będą przebiegać do końca roku.

Wędrówkę japońską ścieżką proponujemy zacząć od Centrum Sztuki WRO i obszernej instalacji Reinkarnacja sztuki mediów, badającej zjawisko „śmierci” dzieł oraz możliwości ich „reinkarnacji”. Wystawę tworzą „nieżywe” obiekty eksponowane w zaaranżowanym mauzoleum, przewodnik audio, sieciowa ankieta zbierająca przemyślenia artystów nad zagadnieniem śmierci dzieł sztuki oraz kolekcja wideowywiadów z artystami.

Następnie rekomendujemy dzieła z Pawilonu Czterech Kopuł, w którym grupa couch (Hiroki Miyazaki + Reiko Miyazaki), biorąc na warsztat

obraz Jerzego Nowosielskiego ze zbiorów Muzeum Narodowego we Wrocławiu, bada zjawiska widzenia, złudzenia i nadzoru (Pixel Works Monograph of the Nude). Instalacje Anima (Risako Kawashima + Yasuaki Kakehi) i Tachikohoru (HOKORI Computing) wykorzystują właściwości pola elektromagnetycznego. Praca DETOUR Shoty Yamauchiego czerpie z historycznej formy kina gatunkowego. Shun Owada w instalacji unearth / Paleo-Pacific uwalnia dźwięk zaklęty w kamieniu 250 milionów lat temu, a Space Moere Project grupy ARTSAT x SIAF Lab otwiera się na spekulatywnych, pozaziemskich odbiorców, obierając kosmos na przestrzeń recepcji wytworów kultury.

Opracowane zapisy swobodnych improwizacji programistycznych i audiowizualnych kreacji, dyskusje o historii i przyszłości sztuki mediów z udziałem japońskich artystów i kuratorów, które odbywały się w czasie wydarzeń otwarcia, są dostępne za pośrednictwem serwisów issuu i vimeo oraz jako materiały w Czytelni Mediów Centrum Sztuki WRO. Dostępne tam programy wideo z dokumentacją projektów japońskich prezentowanych na Biennale WRO w latach 2011–2017 poszerzają kontekst tegorocznej prezentacji.

/ Exhibition of the latest media art from Japan, prepared in the form of a path leading through several venues of the 18th Media Art Biennale WRO 2019 CZYNNIK LUDZKI / HUMAN ASPECT, combines the current presentation with the traces of previous projects made with Japanese artists which are available to the public at the WRO Art Center Media Library and through our web archives.

The time between the first edition of WRO and its current, eighteenth release, coincide with the system of historical eras in Japan.

When the Sound Basis Visual Art Festival WRO started in Wrocław in 1989, the Heisei period has just begun. And although art is not subject to systemic rigors, running its own, asynchronous way towards the declared eras, the next period at the beginning of which the current Japanese exhibition takes place, means for WRO a new quality of cooperation with Japanese partners such as Japan Foundation or the SIAF 2020 triennale in Sapporo.

Japanese artists, curators, observers, and organizers have been active participants in artistic events organized by WRO for many years.

Among the works selected for the public presentations from the open calls of the WRO festivals, there were always works from Japan. From the very beginning, we were also connected by program cooperation, and its first manifestation was the participation of the outstanding artist Takahiko Iimura in the works of the international jury of the WRO ’90.

Digital Japan, the exhibition of experimental animation was in 2003 the first comprehensive presentation prepared by WRO in cooperation with Japanese organizers – the curators of the Digista competition.

The exhibition, prepared thanks to a grant from the Japan Foundation, presented at the Museum of Architecture in Wrocław and the Manghha Center of Japanese Art and Technology in Kraków, showed a specific dimension of Japanese media culture, in which the experimental art of moving image merges with popular television entertainment.

Further, deeper contacts and exchanges manifested themselves, among others in the form of such projects as Japanese Perspective Now! (Biennale WRO 2011) or Reversible // Irreversible // Presence – a year-long series of exhibitions and presentations, implemented in the context of the European Capital of Culture Wrocław 2016 and the Media Art Biennale WRO 2017, that was rounded-up by the individual exhibition presenting the latest software-based installations by Norimichi Hirakawa.

The special presentation of Japanese media art at the Biennale WRO 2019 CZYNNIK LUDZKI / HUMAN ASPECT is the most comprehensive one ever, within this showcase of the latest media art from around the world. To the Biennale audience, we could present 15 works – installations, animations, videos, audiovisual performances – created by groups and individual artists from Japan. A large group of Japanese curators, organizers, and artists, both from Japan and from Europe, were also actively participating in the opening events. Especially mentioned should be our recent program cooperation with new partners – Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media YCAM and ARTSAT x SIAFLab from Sapporo – with whom we have realized original Wrocław versions of their comprehensive projects relating to the past (Reincarnation of Media Art) and the future of media art (Space Moere Project).

The Japanese path during the opening events led through several WRO locations, in which Japanese works were exhibited next to the works of artists from around the world, they also contributed to experimental live activities and discussions about new art. The rich documentation of these activities is part of this catalogue, especially of its electronic form available on the issuu platform. Japanese works and activities were spread across four venues, for the longest time they can be seen in two main locations of the WRO Biennale 2019 – at the Four Domes Pavilion at the WRO Art Center. Program activities under the title HUMAN ASPECT, also with the participation of artists from Japan, will be carried out until the end of the year.

We suggest starting the journey through the Japanese path from the WRO Art Center and a comprehensive installation, Reincarnation of Media Art, exploring the phenomenon of the "death" of works and the possibilities of their "reincarnation". The exhibition is made up of dead objects exhibited in an arranged mausoleum, an audio guide, an online survey gathering artists' thoughts on the issue of the death of artworks and a collection of video interviews.

Then we recommend works from the Four Domes Pavilion, where the couch group (Hiroki Miyazaki + Reiko Miyazaki), taking as a starting point the painting by Jerzy Nowosielski from the collection of the National Museum in Wrocław, examines the phenomena of vision, illusion, and surveillance (Pixel Works Monograph of the Nude). The installations Anima (Risako Kawashima + Yasuaki Kakehi) and Tachikohoru (Hokori Computing) use properties of the electromagnetic field. The work of DETOUR by Shota Yamauchi draws from the historical form of genre cinema. Shun Owada in the unearth / Paleo-Pacific installation releases the sound enchanted in stone 250 million years ago, and the Space Moere Project of the ARTSAT x SIAF Lab group opens up to speculative extraterrestrial audience, turning the outer space into a site for art and culture.

Elaborated recordings of free coding improvisations and audiovisual creations, discussions about the history and future of media art with the participation of Japanese artists and curators, which were held during the opening events, are available through the Issuu and Vimeo services and on-demand programs in the WRO Art Center Media Library. The video programs available there with documentation of Japanese projects presented at the WRO Biennale in 2011–2017 broaden the context of this year's presentation.

Z okazji piętnastolecia YCAM (Centrum Sztuki i Mediów Yamaguchi), grupa exonemo wraz z zespołem YCAM stworzyła wyjątkową wystawę, której myślą przewodnią jest utrwalanie dorobku sztuki mediów i zapewnianie dostępu do jej kluczowych dzieł.

Z biegiem czasu, utrzymanie prac z obszaru sztuki mediów, które wykorzystują przestarzałe urządzenia techniczne, okazuje się coraz trudniejsze. Zamiast nowych metod przechowywania bądź odnawiania technicznych elementów instalacji medialnych, ta wystawa-platforma proponuje szczególne podejście, które rozpatruje „śmierć” dzieł sztuki oraz możliwości ich „reinkarnacji” w przyszłości za pomocą środków innych niż konwencjonalna konserwacja. Poszukując sposobów na przedłużenie żywotności idei wpisanych w takie prace, wystawa skupia się na istocie sztuki jako ich transcendentnym nośniku.

Wraz z twórcami pierwotnej koncepcji wystawy postanowiliśmy wykorzystać tę wyjątkową formułę, aby zgłębić zagadnienia utrwalania dorobku sztuki w innych rejonach świata.

Przypominające kurhan Mauzoleum sztuki mediów, pierwotnie wybudowane w YCAM, a obecnie odtworzone w Centrum Sztuki WRO, w swoich kryptach gromadzi pozostałości niedziałających już dzieł medialnych zarówno artystów japońskich jak i polskich, zgromadzone w archiwach WRO – pionierskiej instytucji, która już od 30 lat zajmuje się sztuką mediów. Do wystawy udało się również pozyskać element kluczowej instalacji Nam June Paika – Zen for TV. Mauzoleum posłużyło jako kontekst i ramy merytoryczne panelu dyskusyjnego Media Art History – Reincarnation poświęconego różnym strategiom pracy z efemerycznymi aspektami sztuki mediów.

Po wystawie Reinkarnacja sztuki mediów zwiedzających prowadzi dźwiękowy przewodnik, syntetycznym głosem objaśniający istotę i przyczynę śmierci każdego z dzieł złożonych w grobowych kryptach.

Można go odsłuchać z historycznych przenośnych urządzeń, m.in. radiomagnetofonów kasetowych czy odtwarzaczy płyt CD.

„Witamy w Mauzoleum sztuki mediów. Zanim Państwa oprowadzimy, opowiemy krótko o wystawie. Kurhan, zaaranżowany we wnętrzach galerii Centrum Sztuki WRO i zainspirowany starożytnymi grobowcami, został po raz pierwszy zaprezentowany w ubiegłym roku w Japonii w YCAM – Centrum Sztuki i Mediów w Yamaguchi – w ramach obchodów piętnastolecia tej placówki. Teraz, z okazji trzydziestolecia Biennale Sztuki Mediów WRO, w ramach jego osiemnastej edycji, której tematem jest CZYNNIK LUDZKI, wystawa Reinkarnacja sztuki mediów jest prezentowana po raz drugi. Ukazuje ona „martwe” prace medialne artystów, którzy współpracowali z obiema instytucjami – zarówno YCAM, jak i WRO. Ośmioro artystów złożyło w kryptach prace, które ich zdaniem „skończyły życie”. Spośród tych pokazywanych na wystawie

w Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] wybrano cztery na wystawę w Centrum Sztuki WRO, a kuratorzy WRO zaproponowali cztery „martwe” prace autorstwa polskich artystów, którzy wcześniej współpracowali z Biennale WRO. Ale dlaczego “martwe”, a nie “żywe” prace? Ta wystawa skupia się na myśleniu o ciągłości kultury poprzez śmierć dzieła. YCAM od lat współpracuje z różnymi artystami, zarówno z Japonii, jak i spoza tego kraju, tworzącymi i wystawiającymi prace z wykorzystaniem technologii medialnych. Tak samo WRO, pierwsza polska instytucja prezentująca prace artystów tworzących na styku sztuki współczesnej, mediów i komunikacji.

Realizacje z dziedziny sztuki mediów często wykorzystują różne urządzenia elektroniczne, w tym komputery, co powoduje, że w porównaniu np. z malarstwem czy rzeźbą trudniej znoszą one próbę czasu ze względu na z jednej strony usterki, z drugiej postęp techniczny. Czy zatem możemy uznać, że praca, która nie działa i nie może być pokazana publiczności, jest „martwa”? Co to w ogóle oznacza, że dzieło „umiera”?

Na potrzeby tej wystawy świadomie proponujemy zastosowanie pojęcia „śmierci dzieła”, by zachęcić publiczność do dialogu o tym, które części dzieł należy zachowywać i jak zapewnić ich przetrwanie”.

/ For the 15th anniversary of Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] the artist unit exonemo together with the YCAM team created a unique exhibition about preserving media art and making available its essential works.

The presevation of media artworks using obsolete technical devices are difficult to maintain over time. Instead of developing methods of preserving or restoring the technological aspects of media installations, this exhibition-platform proposes a special approach by considering the “death” of artworks and the possibilities for “reincarnating” them in the future by means other than conventional conservancy.

Together with the creators of the exhibition’s original concept, we decided to use this unique format to explore the issues of art preservation in other regions. The Mausoleum of Media Art, resembling a burial mound, which houses no longer functioning media works by various artists, originally exhibited at YCAM, is now created anew at the WRO Art Center to highlight objects and artworks from the archives of the pioneering Polish institution, which has been committed to media art for the last 30 years. This time, we could include in the exhibition an element of Nam June Paik's seminal installation, the technical parts of Zen for TV. The Mausoleum delivered both the context and the content for the international panel discussion Media Art History – Reincarnation, presenting different strategies to work with ephemerality of media art.

The Reincarnation of Media Art exhibition can be toured with an audio guide, explaining with synthetic voice significance of all artworks in the burial chambers and the cause of their death. „Welcome to the Mausoleum of Media Art. Before guiding you, let us briefly explain the exhibition. The Mausoleum, arranged inside WRO Art Center's gallery and inspired by ancient tombs, was originally presented last year in Japan at the Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media, YCAM, to commemorate its 15th anniversary. Now, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the WRO Media Art Biennale and during its 18th edition taking place under the title HUMAN ASPECT, the Reincarnation of Media Art exhibition is presented for the second time. It shows “dead” art works by media artists who have been working with both institutions, YCAM and WRO. Eight artists offered works which they deemed have met their “death”, to the burial chambers. For the exhibition at the WRO Art Center, four of these relics originally exhibited at YCAM were chosen, and the WRO curators have proposed four “dead” works by Polish artists who previously collaborated with the WRO Biennale.

But why “dead” works and not “living” works? This exhibition focuses on thinking about the continuation of culture through the death of a work. YCAM has long worked with various artists both in and out of Japan, creating and exhibiting works that incorporate media technology, just like the WRO festivals provided the ground for Poland’s first institution working with the artists at the intersection of contemporary art, media and communication.

Media art works often employ the use of electronic devices such as computers, and therefore compared – for example – to paintings or sculptures, are thought to be harder to preserve, due to damage and technological changes. So if the work no longer functions, and is unable to be exhibited to an audience, does that mean that the work is “dead”? What would it mean for a work to “die” in the first place? For this exhibition, we are intentionally proposing the idea of the “death of a work,” in order to encourage dialogue with the audience about what

Jej eksperymentalne projekty zazwyczaj w żartobliwy i nowatorski sposób zgłębiają paradoksy cyfrowych i analogowych, komputerowo usieciowionych i rzeczywistych środowisk stanowiących część naszego życia. Praca exonemo zatytułowana The Road Movie zdobyła nagrodę Golden Nica w kategorii Net Vision na Prix Ars Electronica w roku 2006. We Wrocławiu w roku 2016 jej instalacja Fireplace została zaprezentowana przez WRO na wystawie Syntetyczna natura w ramach projektu Eco Expanded City. Od roku 2012 grupa organizuje spotkania IDPW oraz sesje internetowego czarnego rynku (Yami-Ichi ). Członkowie grupy mieszkają i działają w Nowym Jorku, a od roku 2015 współpracują z NEW INC. – pierwszym prowadzonym przez muzeum inkubatorem twórczym. / A group formed in 1996 on the internet. Their experimental projects are typically humorous and innovative explorations of the paradoxes of digital and analog computer-networked and actual environments in our lives. Their The Road Movie won the Golden Nica in the Net Vision category at the Prix Ars Electronica 2006. In 2016, their installation Fireplace was presented by the WRO at the Synthetic Nature exhibition as part of the Eco Expanded City project in Wrocław. They have been organizing IDPW gatherings and the Internet Yami-Ichi since 2012. They live and work in New York and have been affiliated with the first museum-led incubator NEW INC since 2015.

YCAM is distinguished by the establishment of an internal research and development team dubbed YCAM InterLab, composed of engineers, curators, educators and other specialists, which collaborates actively with local residents and experts in relevant fields on everything from conceiving artworks, and developing workshops.

Nam June Paik Zen for TV zepsuty monitor kineskopowy / broken CRT-monitor prywatna kolekcja Niemcy / private collection, Germany 1963–1976 Wersja instalacji prezentowana w 1976 roku podczas wystawy w Kunsthal Charlottenborg w Kopenhadze, wykonana przez Paika na miejscu. Techniczne wnętrzności odbiornika telewizyjnego zostały wymienione zgodnie z instrukcjami artysty w latach 2001–2002. Po umieszczeniu nowego monitora kineskopowego w oryginalnej, starej obudowie, wersja z 1976 roku trafiła do kolekcji Smithsonian American Art Museum, natomiast jej wnętrze zostało zachowane przez prywatnego kolekcjonera. / This version was exhibited in 1976 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, Paik made it on site for the purpose of the show. The technical intestines of the TV-set were changed according to the artist's instruction in 2001–2002. After the new hardware was put in the original old case, the 1976 version became a part of the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The old hardware of the work was preserved by a private collector.

There is no evidence what art work was recorded on the tape, so even if the U-matic players can be still found, the broken tape can't be played anymore.

Rafael Lozano-Hemmer Amodal Suspension – Relational Architecture 8 2003 Telefon komórkowy z 2003 roku oraz album z dokumentacją prasową świetlnej instalacji kinetycznej zrealizowanej z okazji otwarcia YCAM oraz zdjęciami zrobionymi przez świadków i użytkowników pracy. Wiadomości przesyłane za pomocą telefonów komórkowych i internetu przez publiczność z 94 krajów, w tym z WRO, były w pracy Lozano-Hemmera przekształcane w błyski reflektorów oświetlających budynek YCAM.

Mobile phone from 2003 and a scrapbook with newspaper clippings about the light kinetic installation made for YCAM's opening along with photos taken by people who witnessed the work and interacted with it.

Messages sent by audience from 94 countries (including WRO) with internet and mobile phones were transformed in light emitted from big searchlights illuminating the YCAM building.

Po pięciu latach działania instalacja monitorująca główne połączenia internetowe Japonia-USA została zdemontowana, a względy bezpieczeństwa wynikające z dalszego rozwoju internetu uniemożliwiły jej ponowne uruchomienie. / Hard disk containing data about WebHopper, early geographical visualization system of global web traffic. After the installation worked for 5 years monitoring the main internet connections between Japan and the USA, it was removed and due to the security issues resulting form the further development of the internet, couldn't be executed anymore.

Masaki Fujihata YMO Techno Badge 1980–1981 Płytka obwodu drukowanego w formie odznaki wykonanej przez artystę specjalnie dla muzycznej grupy techno-pop Yellow Magic Orchestra, skromny prekursor sztuki interaktywnej i ruchu otwartych zasobów. Po dotknięciu czujników technoBadge wydaje dźwięki i miga LED-owymi diodami. Po wprowadzeniu w obieg ok. 4000 egzemplarzy, fani grupy Yellow Magic Orchestra zaczęli na własną rękę wytwarzać repliki odznaki. / An electric circuit board in form of a badge made especially for the techno-pop band Yellow Magic Orchestra. A humble forerunner of interactive art and the open source movement, produced electronic sounds and blinked with LED-lights after touching the sensors. Once approximately 4000 pieces were produced and distributed by the artist, the YMO fan community started to make replicas of the badge by themselves.

Aplikacje opracowane u zarania ery smartfonów miały na celu zaprezentowanie nowych sposobów „oglądania” świata przez „okno” smartfona. Pomimo początkowego dopuszczenia do dystrybucji, zostały później odrzucone przez App Store ze względu na ich nadmierną prostotę. / Art project in the form of iPhone applications. Developed at the dawn of the smartphone era, the apps aimed to present new ways to “see” the world through the “window” of a smartphone. Despite initially passing, later they were rejected by App Store due to their excessive simplicity.

Anna Płotnicka, współpraca / collaboration Paweł Janicki Performance on Demand 2001 Zdjęcia i dokumentacja wideo są jedynymi pozostałościami po performansie, który za pomocą wideo streamingu na żywo – wówczas niemal nieznanej technologii – połączył fizyczną przestrzeń performansu z rozproszoną przestrzenią internetu. Realizacja ta, przeprowadzona tylko raz, oparta była na synchronicznej interakcji wielu użytkowników, których kolektywne decyzje, zdalnie kierowały zachowaniem artystki. / Photographs and video documentation are the only remnants of a performance that used live video streaming – a technical novelty in Poland at that time – to connect the physical perfromance space with the dispersed space of internet. The work, staged only once, was based on synchronized interaction between many internet users, whose collective choices remotely controlled the artists behaviour.

Gameboyzz Orchestra Project 2001–2006 Popsute konsole GameBoy Nintendo używane przez grupę Gameboyzz Orchestra Project jako proste syntezatory do wykonywania performansów audiowizualnych lo-fi. Po premierze na Biennale WRO 2001, grupa z powodzeniem występowała na wielu ważnych scenach globalnych imprez sztuki mediów w latach 2001–2006. Kiedy firma Nintendo zarzuciła artystom naruszanie praw autorskich do nazwy GameBoy, grupa wybrała ugodę, zmieniła nazwę, ale samo dzieło umarło. / Broken GameBoy Nintendo consoles used by the Gameboyzz Orchestra Project group as simple synthetizers to create lo-fi sound and audiovisual performances. After the premiere at the WRO 2001 Biennale, the group successfully performed at a number of important venues and global media art events between 2001–20x06. When Nintendo Corporation claimed the group was violating the intellectual property rights to the brand name GameBoy, the group decided to arrange themselves with Nintendo and change their name, but the work itself died.

Myślę, że dzieła sztuki oparte na oprogramowaniu żyją, dopóki istnieje możliwość ich ponownego wykonania bądź modyfikacji ich kodu źródłowego (lub jego ekwiwalentu) przez kogoś innego, również istoty nieludzkie. Za sto lat chciałbym zobaczyć moje prace uruchomione w nowych wersjach. Dzieła sztuki nie żyją, kiedy nie mogą być odtwarzane i modyfikowane, zwyczajnie są zarchiwizowane. Uważam, że myśląc o dziełach sztuki powinniśmy uznać, że ich istotę stanowi raczej software niż hardware. / In the case of software-based artworks, I think that the "life-span" means that someone including nonhuman beings can execute the works and keep modifying their source code (or the equivalent). The new version of the work is being executed on the system after 100 years. The death of artworks means that they can not be executed or modified, they are in the usual sense "archived". I think we should re-start thinking this from the point that artworks are software rather than hardware.

Nawet jeżeli od dawna już nie działa, to wokół niego nadal gromadzą się znaczenia i wartości. Żywotność dzieła sztuki można rozmaicie interpretować. / Yes, I do. I keep a good documentation about my work in terms of notes in the source code, photos and video documentation. I also keep track of which operating system and software versions support my work running. I don't like the idea of simulator. Perhaps it will be good to maintain the old device and operating systems.

I don't believe there is death of an artwork.

Even it is no longer workable there is still meaning and values around and in it. Additionally artworks are alive with different interpretation.

Właśnie udało nam się z sukcesem przenieść wystawę „Reinkarnacja sztuki mediów” z YCAM w Japonii do Centrum Sztuki WRO w Polsce, zapraszając do udziału w niej kilkoro polskich artystów. Ponownie utwierdziłem się w przekonaniu, że temat tej wystawy – śmierć sztuki mediów – jest zagadnieniem, rozważanym także w innych krajach.

W kolejnym kroku chcielibyśmy... móc wnikliwie przejrzeć sygnały zwrotne od widzów drugiej edycji tej wystawy i zacząć myśleć o kolejnym jej etapie. Teraz aspekt „reinkarnacji” jest ciągle bardzo wieloznaczny, chciałbym też dokładniej przyjrzeć się różnicom w definiowaniu śmierci i życia w różnych kulturach. Mam nadzieję, że dzięki tej przygodzie uda się nam odnaleźć kod właściwy dla takiej niestabilnej formy sztuki.

This time, we have successfully migrated the exhibition "Reincarnation of Media Art" from YCAM in Japan to WRO Art Center in Poland and also invited several local artists. I reconfirmed that this theme – Death of Media Art – is a common issue, being considered in other countries too. What we would like to do next is... reviewing any feedbacks from this second show carefully and to start thinking about the next step.

The "Reincarnation" part of the show is still vague, and also I want to look into the difference of the idea of Life and Death between other cultures.

I hope that a missing code of this type of unstable art form would be discovered with this adventure.

Pixel Works, Monograph of the Nude couch /Reiko Miyazaki, Hiroki Miyazaki/ instalacja / installation, 2019 Praca jest wieloelementową instalacją, w skład której wchodzi wybrany przez artystów ze zbiorów Muzeum Narodowego we Wrocławiu obraz Jerzego Nowosielskiego, przestrzenna kompozycja malarska, urządzenie iPod touch oraz stworzona na bieżąco animacja poklatkowa prezentująca proces in situ.

Instalacja przekształca rzeczywistą scenę z ekranu iPoda w spikselowany obraz w skali 1:1. Stanowi to próbę od-komputeryzowania sztuki mediów, czyli tworzenia „sztuki mediów bez użycia żadnych urządzeń komputerowych”. Inspiracją dla ujmowanego z jednego punktu obrazu jest kontrolne spojrzenie kamer, zamysłem pracy jest refleksja nad takimi zjawiskami i koncepcjami jak „społeczeństwo nadzoru” czy „rzeczywistość, którą zwykle oglądamy”.

W aktualnej wersji Pixel Works, stworzonej specjalnie na Biennale WRO 2019 podczas krótkiej rezydencji artystów we Wrocławiu, pierwotna formuła, w której artyści wykorzystali obraz René Magritte’a La Reproduction interdite, została zastosowana wobec dzieła polskiego artysty. / This work is a complex installation composed of Jerzy Nowosielski’s painting chosen by the artists from the collection of the National Museum in Wrocław, a painted spatial composition, an iPod touch, and

a stop-motion animation created in situ during the production process.

The installation transforms a real scene on the iPod screen into a 1/1 scale pixelated image. This is an attempt at un-computing media art, which means “media art with no computer devices”. The image which is focused into from one point is inspired by the controlling gaze of the surveillance cameras, it's concept overlaps with such phenomena and concepts, as “surveillance society” and “the reality we usually look at”.

For the WRO 2019 Biennale the artists have developed a special version of the Pixel Works during their short artists-in-residency stay in Wrocław. The original formula that was implemented in conjunction with La Reproduction interdite by René Magritte, is now adopted for the work by the Polish artist.

They develop works and projects examining the primary and heuristic processes of manufacturing.

By doing so, they try to find approaches for individuals to engage with institutions of politics, economics, and history through artworks.

Tachihokoru HOKORI Computing /Tatsuya Ishikawa, Kazuya Horibe, Ritsuko Miyake, Katsuki Nogami, Hanna Saito/ instalacja / installation, 2019 W ujęciu artystów, hokori (dosł. kurz, brud) to sztuczne organizmy, które pozostają nieznane mimo zażyłości z ludźmi – rodzaj znajomych obcych żyjących wśród nas. Hokori powstaje w środowisku życia danej osoby i składa się z rozmaitych substancji, w tym z artefaktów i obiektów naturalnych, takich jak włókna, łupież, pyłki, brud, ziemia, skupiska patogenicznych bakterii. Jego szary kolor jest pochodną tworzącej go masy.

Hokori zbiera się samorzutnie w miejscach, w których zachodzą ludzkie działania, takich jak ruiny, opustoszałe przestrzenie, lub zakamarki za urządzeniami elektrycznymi. Powstaje przez niezauważone przez nikogo odkładanie się materii. Instalacja wykorzystuje elektrostatyczne cechy hokori nagromadzonego w kuli z pleksiglasu. Szara masa odpadów różnych form życia tworzy piękny, abstrakcyjny krajobraz. / The artists defined hokori as humans’ familiar, but unknown, artificial organism, a kind of familiar alien living next to us. Hokori is born in a person’s living environment and is composed of various materials, including artifacts and natural objects, such as fibers, dandruff, pollen, dirt, soil particles and gobs of pathogenic bacteria. Its grey color results from its mass. Hokori gathers voluntarily in places where people do not act, such as ruins, vacant spaces or the back of electric appliances. It is formed by accumulating itself without anyone noticing. The installation utilizes the electrostatic features of hokori accumulated in a spheric plexiglass container. The grey mass – debris of various life forms – creates a beautiful abstract landscape.

HOKORI Computing to grupa złożona z pięciorga młodych artystów, która zawiązała się w roku 2018 podczas hackathonu Art Hack Day 2018, praca była prezentowana w Narodowym Muzeum Nowej Nauki i Innowacji Miraikan w Tokio. / HOKORI Computing is a group of five young artists that gathered 2018 during the Art Hack Day 2018, their installation was presented at the Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo.

Anima Risako Kawashima, Yasuaki Kakehi instalacja / installation, 2017 Praca wykorzystuje ludzki oddech jako interfejs aktywujący układ świetlny. Uczestnik za pomocą słomki puszcza bańkę mydlaną, a umieszczając ją poniżej gniazda żarówki, zapala lampę. Światło świeci, póki bańka nie pęknie, potem gaśnie. Specjalna żarówka, w której scalone są źródło światła i czujnik, wykorzystuje przewodnictwo mydlanej powłoczki – bańka działa jako część obiegu elektrycznego tego delikatnego układu. / The work literally utilizes human breath as an interface to activate a lighting system. The participant produces a soap bubble using a straw.

When they put the bubble underneath a light socket, the light bulb is activated. The light is on as long as the soap bubble lasts under the bulb, and it turns off when the soap bubble bursts. A special light bulb which combines the sensor and a lighting component utilizes the conductivity of the soap film to detect its existence. The bubble works as part of an electronic circuit in this delicate system.

She is especially interested in designing material-driven interactions. Her works have been shown at the Spiral, Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo and the Ars Electronica Festival.

Yasuaki Kakehi is a media artist and an HCI researcher based in Tokyo, Japan. He works as Associate Professor at the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, University of Tokyo. He has exhibited his works and research results at multiple venues, including SIGGRAPH, the Ars Electronica Festival, the YCAM and the ICC. He is trying to cross the boundaries between engineering, art and design.

unearth / Paleo-Pacific Shun Owada instalacja / installation, 2017 Praca zgłębia dwa fundamentalne składniki dźwięku: atmosferę i czas.

Wykorzystuje w tym celu szczególny rodzaj wapienia powstały w wyniku fosylizacji fuzulin – małych organizmów morskich, które wymarły podczas największej masowej ekstynkcji 250 milionów lat temu. Ciała fuzulin kształtowały się w wyniku wiązania dwutlenku węgla w morzach. Dwutlenek węgla nadal zachowany jest w ich skamielinach. Pod wpływem skrapiania rozcieńczonym kwasem, skamieliny te rozpuszczają się, przy czym dwutlenek węgla uwalniany jest do powietrza. Dzięki mikrofonom otaczającym wapienie publiczność może słuchać subtelnych odgłosów towarzyszących rozpuszczaniu się skał zawierającym mikro skamieliny.

Do instalacji zostały wykorzystane wapienie jurajskie z pokładów w Solnhofen w Bawarii oraz lokalny wapień z Dolnego Śląska. / Exploration of the fundamental elements of sound: the atmosphere and time. The work utilizes a specific type of limestone produced through the fossilization of fusulina, small marine organisms that vanished during the greatest mass extinction 250 million years ago. Fusulina formed their bodies by biological fixation of CO2 in the sea. And CO2 is still stored in these fossils (limestones). Dripping diluted acid onto them causes the fossils to melt, and releases CO2 into the space. Owing to the microphones placed around the limestone, the viewers can listen to the extremely subtle sound of fossils melting. For the installation in Wrocław two kinds of limestone were used – local stones from Lower Silesia and the Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone from Bavaria.

Instalacja uosabia spekulatywne spotkanie Ziemian i nieznanej pozaziemskiej inteligencji, urzeczywistnione dzięki sprzężeniu sztuki i nauki, które łączy miejsce na Ziemi z przestrzenią kosmiczną przy wykorzystaniu technologii osobistej oraz dzieł sztuki mediów i udostępnieniu tego procesu ludziom. Za pomocą przenośnych odbiorników radiowych możliwe jest odbieranie i słuchanie sygnałów, których domniemanym adresatem jest uniwersalna inteligencja, a nadawcą istoty nieludzkie.

Antena nadająca, która jest rzeźbą z fal elektromagnetycznych, ma strukturę bryły platońskiej – dwudziestoczterokomórki foremnej w przestrzeni czterowymiarowej – będącej uniwersalnym językiem wszechświata.

Ten wielościan foremny, złożony z trzech hipersześcianów, ma 24 wierzchołki, 96 krawędzi, a jego ściany tworzy 96 trójkątów foremnych i 24 ośmiościany foremne. Patrząc na rzeźbę pod różnym kątem, można odkrywać rozmaite kształty, rozważając znaczenie odbieranych sygnałów dźwiękowych, w oczekiwaniu na pozaludzką inteligencję w przestrzeni kosmicznej. / The installation is a speculative encounter between the Humans and an unknown extraterrestrial intelligence, utilizing the art and science approach and connecting a place on Earth with the outer space through personal technology and media artworks and sharing the process with citizens. You can receive and hear signals which are supposed to be addressed to general intelligence from non-human beings through the portable radios in hand. The structure of transmitting antenna as a sculpture of electromagnetic wave is based on a geometric four-dimensional Platonic solid (Regular 24-polytope) which is a common language of the universe. This regular icositetrachoron form of three hypercubes (4 dimensional cube) with 24 vertices, 96 edges, 96 equilateral triangles and 24 regular octahedrons has many symmetries. You can discover various shapes by looking from various directions and speculate meaning of the received signals in the anticipation of extra-human intelligence in space.

SIAF Lab od 2015 roku wdraża rozmaite projekty społeczne zakładające aktywne uczestnictwo publiczności, takie jak cykle wykładów o sztuce, czy też projekt Bent Icicle Project – Tulala. Tortoise Timer Mitsuru Tokisato instalacja / installation, 2018 Wkomponowana w przestrzeń instalacja wideo składająca się ze stopera, dużego minutnika, ekranu nawigacyjnego i dwóch monitorów umieszczonych na przeciwległych ścianach pomieszczenia wystawienniczego.

Wideo ukazuje żółwia przemierzającego na zmianę monitory, w ustalonych odstępach czasowych. Stoper z funkcją drukowania połączony jest z monitorem i mierzy czas, w jakim żółw przemieszcza się przez monitor.

Ekran nawigacyjny zaś ukazuje plan miejsca i białe koło, które porusza się synchronicznie z żółwiem. Minutnik działa cały czas i nie jest powiązany z żółwiem. Instalacja stanowi kolejną próbę połączenia przestrzennych i czasowych aspektów obrazu wideo z sytuacją zachodzącą w czasie rzeczywistym w określonej przestrzeni. / A closed-circuit site-specific video installation composed of a stopwatch, a large one-minute timer, a single navigation monitor and two monitors facing each other on two opposite walls of the room. The video image shows a tortoise alternately moving across the two monitors at fixed time intervals. A stopwatch with printing functionality which is connected to the monitor measures the lap-time as the tortoise passes through the center of one of the monitors. The navigation monitor displays the floor plan of the venue and a white circle that moves synchronously with the tortoise. The one-minute timer is always running and has no connection with the tortoise. Another attempt to connect the spatial and temporal aspects of the video image and the live situation in a particular space.

DETOUR Shota Yamauchi instalacja / installation, 2018 Współczesne zastosowanie klasycznej techniki filmowania zwanej „screen process”, wykorzystywanej zwłaszcza w produkcji filmów niskobudżetowych. Zamiast kręcić sceny w lokalizacjach w plenerze, obrazy krajobrazów projektowano na ścianę studia, a aktorzy odgrywali epizody na ich tle. Artysta reinterpretuje tę technikę i przyjmuje jako swoją własną: instaluje na oknie samochodu blue-boxową zasłonę i posługuje się zsyntetyzowanym, „sztucznym” krajobrazem. W ten sposób nie opuszczając w ogóle garażu nakręcił film drogi w estetyce noir. Efektem końcowym tej manipulacji, wobec techniki kinematograficznej zyskującej ludzki wymiar, jest praca wideo będąca grą z thrillerem psychologicznym jako gatunkiem. / A contemporary use of the classic filming technique called screen process, used particularly in the production of low-budget movies. Instead of shooting outdoors at a given location, landscape images were projected onto the background of the studio, while the actors performed in front of it. The artist re-interpreted this technique and adopted it as his own by pasting a chromakey curtain on the window of the car and using a synthesized “artificial” landscape. Consequently, while he did not go out from the garage at all, he managed to make a road movie in the aesthetics of Film Noir. The end effect of this manipulation of the cinematic technique with the human touch is a video work that plays with the genre of psychological thriller.

Dźwięk jest generowany w czasie rzeczywistym przez odbieranie i wykonywanie kodu programu z balonu. To „telekodowanie [tele + livecoding]” można opisać jako rodzaj nowej improwizacji, którą można usłyszeć z kosmosu.

Dodatkowo, oryginalna aplikacja wirtualna FPV (widok z pierwszej osoby) oferuje wirtualny widok z kosmosu na odbiorców za pomocą danych GPS balonu. / A balloon that reaches the stratosphere far from the ground is an agent as a remote improviser. The balloon has a function to generate program code autonomously from sensor data and send it to the ground using amateur radio-based APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System). Sound is generated in real time by receiving and executing a program code from the balloon. This “tele-coding [tele + livecoding]” performance can be described as a kind of new improvisation to be heard from space. In addition, original virtual FPV (First-person view) application offers the virtual view from space to audience using GPS data of the balloon.

The word TEWASURA in a Japanese dialect means to forget about something in front of you. There is a “forgetting” between auditory time, visual time, and time to produce it, so maybe the relationship between the two performers and the audience could be described with that word?

Technologicznie zaawansowane wyposażenie umożliwia doświadczanie a także śledzenie ruchów ciał w oderwaniu od swojego własnego ciała w przestrzeni wirtualnej i środowisku rzeczywistym. Dzieło powstało przy wykorzystaniu technologii opracowanych przez YCAM, takich jak Reaktor Świadomości w Ruchu (RAM), który rejestruje ruchy tancerza Tomohiko Tsujimoto i przetwarza je w tańczące trójwymiarowe ciała.

Movements of the body and the act of watching it while detached from one’s own body can be experienced in virtual space and the real environment equipped with advanced technologies. In creating this work, technologies developed by the YCAM were used, such as the Reactor for Awareness in Motion (RAM) to capture the movements of the dancer Tomohiko Tsujimoto and to transform them into 3D dancing bodies. The Other in You offers a new way to experience contemporary dance with the use of cutting-edge computer graphics, haptic sensors which directly express the dance to the body, 17-channel stereophonic sound and research on Virtual Reality techniques.

Jak ocalić od zapomnienia własności i cechy źródłowego czynnika ludzkiego? / On the basis of an oversized 3D web browser which can be used by piloting the avatar of Akihiko Taniguchi (his hallmark), the artist developed a site-specific version of his work in the context of the HUMAN ASPECT theme of the WRO 2019. Taniguchi’s work proposes a radical move underneath the external layers of the technology’s shiny surface. Helplessly imperfect, his avatar, despite being based on the advanced engines for the gaming industry, is trapped in the 3D-computer-generetated non-space of the Internet and thus anticipates the future of the total digitality.

Jest twórcą instalacji, performansów i prac wideo wykorzystujących autorskie urządzenia i oprogramowania. W ostatnich latach skupia się przede wszystkim na sztuce internetowej, a czasami praktykuje jako VJ. He creates installations, performances, and video works using self-built devices and software. In recent years, he has been focused on net art and sometimes involved in Vjing. Mirai Mizue, urodzony w 1981 roku, ukończył studia z zakresu projektowania graficznego na Akademii Sztuki Tama. Jego animacje wyróżniano wieloma nagrodami i wybierano do prezentacji na prestiżowych festiwalach filmowych, np. w sekcji „Horyzonty” na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmowym w Wenecji, Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmów Animowanych w Annecy, czy na 64. Zwierzęta stopniowo przejmują całe mieszkanie, wspinają się po zasłonach, wpełzają na pościel, przemieszczają się po klawiaturze pianina. Spotkanie z naturą, która powoli acz nieustępliwie bierze w posiadanie umeblowane wnętrze, sprawia, że widz czuje się coraz bardziej nieswojo. Praca stanowi najnowszą odsłonę zapoczątkowanego w roku 2011 cyklu “Living Creatures Sci-Fi”. / The artist collects crabs and other various aquatic arthropods from the swampy riverside, releases them into his human-empty house, and films the scene. The animals slowly overtake the whole apartment, climb up the curtains, crawl on the bed sheets, and march across the piano keyboard. An uncanny feeling arises from the encounter with nature which is slowly but surely overtaking the furnished interior. The video is the latest work of the Living Creatures Sci- Fi series, which has been continuing since 2011.

Hirofumi Nakamoto, urodzony w 1986 roku, ze względu na częste przeprowadzki swojej rodziny, spędził dzieciństwo głównie w Mjanmie i Indonezji. W roku 2011 ukończył Tokijski Uniwersytet Zokei, gdzie studiował kinematografię. W ramach programu wymiany studenckiej był również słuchaczem Uniwersytetu Zachodniej Anglii na kierunku sztuk pięknych. W roku 2013 ukończył studia na Wydziale Kinematografii i Nowych Mediów Tokijskiej Akademii Sztuki. Jego twórczość obejmuje głównie prace wideo. Jest autorem czterech projektów dyplomowych: Quiet Visitors, Silent Travelers, Residents with No Voice i The Silent Passenger.

Ostatni z nich pokazywano na Międzynarodowym Festiwalu Filmowym w Berlinie w roku 2013. Natomiast w roku 2014 jego dzieło IR PLANET figurowało w programie festiwalu Visions du Reel. / Hirofumi Nakamoto, born in 1986, spent his childhood primarily in Myanmar and Indonesia due to his family’s frequent relocations. In 2011, he graduated from the Tokyo Zokei University, where he majored in film. He also studied fine arts at the University of the West of England through an exchange program. In 2013, he graduated from the Graduate School of Film and New Media at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He mainly creates works with video. He has developed four graduation projects: Quiet Visitors, Silent Travelers, Residents with No Voice, and The Silent Passenger.

The Silent Passenger was selected for the 2013 Berlin International Film Festival. His work, IR PLANET, was selected for the 2014 Visions du Reel.

Rytuał polega na wydobywaniu prastarej pamięci, którą mogą dzielić delfiny i ludzie. Artysta powraca do swoich korzeni, posługując się wypchanym skrzypłoczem znalezionym w domu swoich dziadków.

Skanując pomnik posiadający „aurę” (jak nagrobek przodków artysty), drukując go i wykorzystując jako przyrząd rytualny, praca eksperymentuje z „aurą” dzieła sztuki w epoce mechanicznej reprodukcji. / Kubo seeks to bring himself closer to the undeniable feeling that the world and its history are steered by something beyond human intelligence, by making his own body a laboratory which connects with humanity. First, he finds his ancestors’ tomb and peers inside it by recreating the interior with computer graphics. He proceeds to look for the intersection of his DNA chain sequence and the collective memory of humanity by donning a horseshoe crab mask which houses the memory of his ancestors, then snorts salt through his nose as if it were a hallucinogen and gulps a drink of water. By doing so, he brings the ocean into his body and mind, and he sinks further into the inner ocean led by the horseshoe crab, which is said to be a living fossil.

Gaetan Kubo, urodzony w 1988 roku, ukończył studia magisterskie z zakresu sztuki intermedialnej na tokijskim Uniwersytecie Sztuk oraz otrzymał grant fundowany przez fundację sztuki POLA i miasto Kioto.

Kubo stara się dostrzec coś, czego nie jesteśmy w stanie zobaczyć, posługuje się przy tym wytwarzanymi przez siebie przedziwnymi przyrządami. Wykorzystuje elementy nauki i zjawisk ponadnaturalnych, tworząc w ten sposób magię. Ostatnio jego prace były pokazywane na wystawach zbiorowych, takich jak Media Conscious (NTT ICC), Noc Sztuk w Roppongi (organizownej przez Muzeum Mori) i XI Biennale Młodych Artystów w Gunma (Muzeum Sztuki Współczesnej w Gunma; nagroda Bounty). / Gaetan Kubo, born in 1988, lives and works in Kyoto. A graduate (2013) of the Intermedia Art Course at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. In his works, he relies on originally designed devices to discuss what he collectively refers to as the “occult”: paranormal phenomena, scientifically imperceptible things and invisible relationships within psychoanalysis and social sciences.

Prezentacja najnowszych dzieł sztuki mediów z Japonii przebiegająca w aktualnym planie wystaw i wydarzeń programu Biennale WRO 2019 CZYNNKI LUDZKI / HUMAN ASPECT odbywa się w kontekście podsumowania stulecia relacji dyplomatycznych między Polską i Japonią.

Ta historyczna perspektywa oficjalnej współpracy, manifestującej się również w dziedzinie kultury i sztuki, skłoniła nas do prześledzenia śladów aktywności artystów i artystek z Japonii dokumentowanych przez nas i przechowywanych w archiwum WRO, rozwijanym i opracowywanym od 1989 roku.

To największe nierozproszone archiwum sztuki mediów w Polsce i jedno z najważniejszych tego rodzaju w Europie, pokazuje ścieżki, jakimi nowa sztuka przenikała do obiegu prezentacji i krytycznej refleksji w naszym kraju. Począwszy od oryginalnych dzieł zgłaszanych do programu Biennale WRO, przez dokumentację ich prezentacji, samodzielne wystawy sztuki japońskiej prezentowane przez WRO po programy telewizyjne o sztuce nowych mediów realizowane przez nas podczas najważniejszych europejskich wystaw i festiwali (m.in. Ars Electronica, Transmediale, MultiMediale, Ostranenie, Biennale WRO) w koprodukcji z TVP – polską telewizją publiczną, materiały te dowodzą trwającej od 30 lat intensywnej obecności japońskiej sztuki mediów Polsce. Stąd też, kiedy prace medialne japońskich artystek i artystów, utożsamiane z wizjonerskimi strategiami pracy z najnowszymi technologiami w polu sztuki, zaczęły być w Polsce szerzej prezentowane, sztuka mediów z Japonii miała już tutaj swoją publiczność.

W tej publikacji zapragnęliśmy zatem ukazać również solidne fundamenty historii naszych relacji z japońskimi artystami i nasz wkład w recepcję japońskiej sztuki mediów w Polsce począwszy od ostatniej dekady XX wieku.

The presentation of new media-art works from Japan running throughout the program of exhibitions and events at the HUMAN ASPECT WRO 2019 Biennale is taking place against the backdrop of observances marking one hundred years of diplomatic relations between Poland and Japan. The historical perspective of this long-standing official collaboration, which includes culture and art, has moved us to survey the works of Japanese artists recorded and preserved in the WRO archives, which we have been compiling and developing since 1989.

As Poland’s largest original archive of media art, and one of the major such archives in Europe, the WRO collection reveals the paths by which new media art entered the circuit of exhibition and critical consideration in Poland. The materials we have accumulated range from original submissions to the WRO Biennale, to the documentation of their presentation and separate exhibitions of Japanese art mounted

by WRO, to TV coverage of new media art that we have produced at Europe’s leading exhibitions and festivals (e.g., Ars Electronica, Transmediale, MultiMediale, Ostranenie, the WRO Biennale) in collaboration with Polish public broadcaster TVP. These materials bear witness to thirty years of comprehensive presence of Japanese media art in Poland, during which Japanese media artists have become well known in Poland for their visionary artistic strategies with new technology, and Japanese media art has gained a dedicated audience here.

In this catalogue, therefore, we wanted to display also the history of WRO's relationship with Japanese artists and WRO's contribution to the reception of Japanese media art in Poland, beginning from the last decade of the 20th century.
