ARTS DISTRICT CHORALE Extraordinary Music in Unexpected Ways
Dallas Wind Symphony Looking Back, Looking Forward
By: H. Michie Akin, Artistic Director
The Dallas Wind Symphony launches its 25th Anniversary season this month with a look to the past, and finishes the season in April with a peek into the future. “Since it’s our 25th anniversary, we thought it would be fun to start the season with a re-creation of our very first concert,” said James Gillespie founder and executive director Kim Campbell. “We were even lucky enough to get the same soloist, James Gillespie, who is an outstanding clarinet player.” The concert, scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Meyerson Symphony Center, features works by Sousa, Holst, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Grainger, among others. The Wind Symphony wraps up their concert year with “Redshift,” celebrating four highly acclaimed American composers. “These guys are busy shaping the future of band music in our country,” Campbell said. “Judging by their music, we have a lot to look forward to.” Music lovers can certainly look forward to a year’s worth of great Dallas Wind Symphony concerts. Plus, the Wind Symphony is offering a Half Price ticket offer, with a money-back guarantee (ed. note: We don’t think this is likely.) New subscribers can buy season tickets at half price, and if they don’t enjoy themselves at the first concert, they can get their money back. For more details, see the Dallas Wind Symphony’s web site at dws.org. The Dallas Wind Symphony joins WRR Sunday Sept. 5 for our 16th Annual Picnic at NorthPark. Their performance closes the evening’s festivities with all the family favorites you’ve come to expect from the Wind Symphony.
The Arts District Chorale joins the Dallas Wind Symphony on stage for WRR’s The Arts District Chorale during the Classic Picnic at NorthPark Sunday, Cafe at One Arts Plaza Sept. 5 from 5-9 p.m. Founded in 1989, the Arts District Chorale is a signature ensemble of gifted amateur and professional singers from all walks of life. They are recognized for unique and innovative programming of choral masterworks in the world-class cultural venues of the Dallas Arts District. The Chorale’s work is built upon a shared experience of continuous learning and a commitment to excellence, promoting arts experiences that transform the gathered community, singer and audience member alike. The 2010-2011 Season, Beyond Here Lie Dragons: Maps and Territories, explores the profound relevance of creativity and risk-taking to the modern world, through an examination of very old and very new music that breaks through established conventions; through music that depicts the challenges and rewards of the pursuit of peace on earth; through works of art emerging from an intellectual crucible of creative geniuses; and by revealing the cataclysmic encounters of ancient and modern cultures in the Americas. Incorporating architecture, dance, drama, story-telling and a profound sense of place, the four subscription events of the Arts District Chorale’s 2010-11 Season again promise “Extraordinary Music in Unexpected Ways.” For tickets and more information about the Chorale and its programs visit artsdistrictchorale.org, e-mail info@artsdistrictchorale. org or call 214.942.5085.

Pipedreams LIVE! They’re tuning up the high-pressure trumpets on the Lay Family Concert Organ for a sonic spectacular at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Join WRR at PIPEDREAMS LIVE! Monday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. Get a sneak peak at the show Sept. 5 from 10-midnight (right after the Picnic!) as we broadcast a special two-hour edition of Michael Barone Pipedreams featuring all the great organs of the Metroplex. This concert promises to be what has become an increasingly rare opportunity… the chance to revel in the power and glory of one of the world’s foremost concert organs (by renowned builder C. F. Fisk), with tributes to Bach, colorful works by local composers, a melodic Texas tribute, and a world-premiere. Co-sponsored by the Dallas and Fort Worth Chapters of the American Guild of Organists, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and WRR Classical 101.1 FM, this program showcases resident organ curator Mary Preston; local talent prize winners Dong-Il Shin, Susan De Kam, and Yoon-mi Lim; and special guest Stephen Tharp from New York City. Other regional performers include the husband-wife duo of Kiyo and Chiemi Watanabe, Christopher Anderson, Christopher Berry, and Henry McDowell. Returning to Dallas to recap his role as master-of-ceremonies, Michael Barone, host of American Public Media’s Pipedreams, hopes to recreate the excitement of a similar event held at the Meyerson in 2005. That year, the hall was totally full 20 minutes beforehand, and several hundred were turned away disappointed. Advance general-admission tickets are available ($10 Grand Tier, $5 all other*) through the Dallas Symphony Orchestra box office and at dallassymphony. com. *The Grand Tier is appreciated by most organ afficianados as the best place to experience the majesty of the Lay Family Organ. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. to give you an opportunity to find a good seat and peruse organ builder displays in the lobby. Meyerson concessions will be available before the concert and during intermission. Don’t miss out on a fun-filled evening! Visit wrr101.com for the full program planned for this exciting evening at the Meyerson.

The Arts Council Northeast (ACN) is one of many partners WRR has the privilege of working with as we support the arts in North Texas. We caught up with Cathy Hernandez of the ACN to tell us a little about the organization. Tell us about ACN. What cities and/or organizations do you work with? Our Arts Council works with sixteen different cities including Hurst, Euless, Bedford, Roanoke, Haltom City, Southlake, Westlake, N. Richland Hills, Richland Hills, Grapevine, Watauga, Saginaw, Haslet, Trophy Club, Colleyville, and Keller. We offer a free series of public performances throughout these cities called our Masterworks Series. We also offer annual grants to individual artists of all genres, and to arts organizations – all within these sixteen cities. Lastly, we work with arts education by providing local summer camps in the arts to youths. Which types of events and programs do you present/host/support? Our grant for individual artists gives project-support for local artists who want to do free, community based programs. These projects have been as diverse as flamenco dancer Martha Valdez giving a free flamenco performance at the Southlake Senior Center to Laurie Gowland, a Bedford stained-glass artist who created a beautiful piece for her local school. How can people find out more about the Arts Council Northeast and the events going on - and get involved? Go to our web site at artscouncilnortheast.org! Tell us about some of your signature programs or events - what are the highlights/favorites of the Northeast Tarrant County Arts Calendar? We annually do a big fund raiser in August called Taste of Northeast. This event raises needed funds for our grant programs and other programs within the community! It features local restaurants as well as local artists. We also partner with the Arts League – a local group of women who does an amazing job to raise money for the arts – to do their big, annual luncheon called the Shining Stars Awards. This will be on Friday, October 22.
