ARTS DISTRICT CHORALE Extraordinary Music in Unexpected Ways
Dallas Wind Symphony Looking Back, Looking Forward
By: H. Michie Akin, Artistic Director
The Dallas Wind Symphony launches its 25th Anniversary season this month with a look to the past, and finishes the season in April with a peek into the future. “Since it’s our 25th anniversary, we thought it would be fun to start the season with a re-creation of our very first concert,” said James Gillespie founder and executive director Kim Campbell. “We were even lucky enough to get the same soloist, James Gillespie, who is an outstanding clarinet player.” The concert, scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Meyerson Symphony Center, features works by Sousa, Holst, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Grainger, among others. The Wind Symphony wraps up their concert year with “Redshift,” celebrating four highly acclaimed American composers. “These guys are busy shaping the future of band music in our country,” Campbell said. “Judging by their music, we have a lot to look forward to.” Music lovers can certainly look forward to a year’s worth of great Dallas Wind Symphony concerts. Plus, the Wind Symphony is offering a Half Price ticket offer, with a money-back guarantee (ed. note: We don’t think this is likely.) New subscribers can buy season tickets at half price, and if they don’t enjoy themselves at the first concert, they can get their money back. For more details, see the Dallas Wind Symphony’s web site at dws.org. The Dallas Wind Symphony joins WRR Sunday Sept. 5 for our 16th Annual Picnic at NorthPark. Their performance closes the evening’s festivities with all the family favorites you’ve come to expect from the Wind Symphony.
The Arts District Chorale joins the Dallas Wind Symphony on stage for WRR’s The Arts District Chorale during the Classic Picnic at NorthPark Sunday, Cafe at One Arts Plaza Sept. 5 from 5-9 p.m. Founded in 1989, the Arts District Chorale is a signature ensemble of gifted amateur and professional singers from all walks of life. They are recognized for unique and innovative programming of choral masterworks in the world-class cultural venues of the Dallas Arts District. The Chorale’s work is built upon a shared experience of continuous learning and a commitment to excellence, promoting arts experiences that transform the gathered community, singer and audience member alike. The 2010-2011 Season, Beyond Here Lie Dragons: Maps and Territories, explores the profound relevance of creativity and risk-taking to the modern world, through an examination of very old and very new music that breaks through established conventions; through music that depicts the challenges and rewards of the pursuit of peace on earth; through works of art emerging from an intellectual crucible of creative geniuses; and by revealing the cataclysmic encounters of ancient and modern cultures in the Americas. Incorporating architecture, dance, drama, story-telling and a profound sense of place, the four subscription events of the Arts District Chorale’s 2010-11 Season again promise “Extraordinary Music in Unexpected Ways.” For tickets and more information about the Chorale and its programs visit artsdistrictchorale.org, e-mail info@artsdistrictchorale. org or call 214.942.5085.
