Trammell Crow passed away Jan. 14, 2009 at 94 leaving a legacy that will be remembered for generations. His impact on the skyline of Dallas defines the city. From the Trammel Crow Center which houses the Crow Collection of Asian Art to Chase Tower and the newly developed One Arts Plaza his daughter Lucy Bill- Trammell Crow ingsley developed, to four other down- 1914-2009 town skyscrapers and Dallas’ largest hotel, Crow truly helped build present day Dallas. But it’s his dedication to the arts and charitable causes we want to highlight. Mr. Crow and his wife, Margaret, shared a lifelong passion for collecting fine art—particularly Asian art— during their many trips abroad. Mrs. Crow said that Chinese art, especially jade, always fascinated her husband. “I cannot say why it is,” Mr. Crow once said, pointing to his heart, “but these objects move me.” Desiring that everyone share this love for Asian Crow continued on page 2

Murchison Performing Arts Center 10-year anniversary The University of North Texas College of Music celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Murchison Performing Arts Center with Handel’s oratorio Saul, led by Dallas Opera Music Director Graeme Jenkins and featuring renowned UNT music faculty and student ensembles. The Feb. 5 concert is the first of two special events in the month-long celebration, “From Handel to Brubeck: Celebrating 10 Years of Musical The 2006 Samson performance feat. Excellence at the Murchison Performing Graeme Jenkins and Richard Croft Arts Center.” A repeat performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas. The other bookend of the celebration will feature the Dave Brubeck Quartet, conducted by alumnus Russell Gloyd, on Feb. 26 (Thursday) with the UNT Symphony Orchestra, UNT Grand Chorus and UNT One O’Clock Lab Band. UNT marked the grand opening of the 72,500-square-foot Murchison Performing Arts Center on Feb. 20, 1999. The Murchison, designed by Malcolm Holzman, of the award-winning firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, earned immediate critical and public acclaim, joining the ranks of the finest performing arts complexes in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The Murchison houses two world-class performance venues: the Margot and Bill Winspear Performance Hall and the Lyric Theater as well as a large instrumental rehearsal hall, a box office, offices and support spaces. In October, the University of North Texas College of Music inaugurated its new concert organ in the hall. The Richard Ardoin-Paul Voertman Concert Organ -- stretching nearly 35 feet tall at the center and weighing 8 metric tons -- was built in front of the pentagonal glass wall in the 1,025-seat hall. Speaking of the performances that will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Murchison Performing Arts Center, Dr. James C. Scott, dean of the UNT College of Music, noted: “The special events we are producing for our anniversary month represent points of great pride for the College of Music and, over the course of the month, will utilize most of the larger performing resources of the College. The production of Saul is the fourth in a series of splendid Handel collaborations under Maestro Jenkins that bring together many of our outstanding students and faculty alongside leading professionals from this country and abroad. The Dave Brubeck Quartet concert places one of America’s most celebrated ensembles in performances of Brubeck’s own music in collaboration with our Symphony Orchestra, Grand Chorus, and One O’Clock Lab Band. These collaborative performances, which could never have taken place before the Murchison was built, exemplify what is possible at UNT’s College of Music.”
