Diving into fall season with our second of three exhibitions devoted to Houston Modernism, William Reaves | Sarah Foltz Fine Art presents Degrees of
Abstraction Featuring: Basilios Poulos & Don Localio , which consists of two one-man exhibitions.
Each artist uniquely uses his own visual language to depict varying approaches to abstraction, and offers an interesting inspection of the developments and modes of abstract painting in Texas by the two artists.
Basilios Poulos: Landscape Journeys: While Basilios
“Bas” Poulos has been anactive and important figure in the Houston arts scene for almost forty years, having taught in the Art Department at Rice University from 1975-2008, this is his first solo exhibition at William Reaves | Sarah Foltz Fine Art. Gallerists Reaves and Foltz are both longtime admirers of Poulos’work, and have each been following his recent works with much interest as they explore abstraction within landscape painting. In the fall of 2016, Poulos completed an artist residency in LaGrange, Georgia where he was surrounded by luscious wooded landscapes. Basilios Poulos: Landscape Journeys focuses on this body of work inspired by his time there, as well as his reflections on landscape upon returning to Texas, and is sure to be one of the most vibrant and lush exhibitions of the fall. In his most recent output from the past year, Poulos
J o u r n e y s
focuses on abstracted landscapes such as Enchanted Forest, Southern Woods, The Wetland, or the ubiquitous Abstract Landscape Series. These acrylic and watercolor works demonstrate his in-depth pictorial and physical artistic investigation of landscapes inspired by the woods, with fine attention to time and the changes to the landscape affected by its passing–light and shadow, autumnal colors, catching the seasonal changing of the leaves. Of Poulos’ work, art historian Jim Edwards recently stated, “Poulos has melded color, line and form simultaneously, rendering the features of the landscape not as isolated elements, but rather as varied coexisting colored shapes. It is the assembly of these juxtaposed colored shapes that createsthe paintings’ sense of pictorial space while at the same time capturing a sense of nature's own rhythms and colors dance-like luminosity."
