Watershed: Peter Healy, Matt Messinger, & Kate Mulholland
On View March 29 - May 3, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 29th, 2-4pm
Foltz Fine Art is proud to present Watershed, a compelling group exhibition featuring new works by Peter Healy, Matt Messinger, and Kate Mulholland. Opening on March 29, 2025, and on view through May 3, 2025, this exhibition marks a pivotal moment in the careers of these three distinctive Houston-based artists. The title Watershed reflects both the physical and metaphorical significance of water as it defines boundaries, shapes landscapes, and represents transformative change. In the context of this exhibition, Watershed symbolizes a turning point in the artists’ careers, a moment where their individual practices have evolved to new heights. These works demonstrate their ongoing growth, artistic development, and expanding presence in the art world.
Healy, Messinger, and Mulholland each bring their own unique voice and medium to the table, offering a diverse range of artistic expressions. Peter Healy’s abstract compositions invite viewers into a world of color and form, that is constantly evolving to embrace new art making practices. Matt Messinger’s mixed-media compositions explore the use of symbolic imagery, color, and textures. He creates his own visual language within his work, allowing the viewer to witness dialogues between them once displayed together. Kate Mulholland’s vibrant, layered paintings push the boundaries of abstraction, capturing emotional depth and energy through her innovative process and color choices. Blending subjects of art history, geology, and our relationship to the environment. Each work tells a deeper story beyond the visual. The three artists first exhibited with Foltz Fine Art as part of the gallery's Texas Emerging series Matt and Peter in 2022, and Kate in 2023. Since then, each artist has cultivated a devoted following and an ever-growing collector base, as their work continues to resonate with audiences and evolve. Watershed offers a unique opportunity to experience the breadth of their individual talents, showcasing their recent works and providing insight into their creative journeys. We invite you to join us for the opening reception on March 29, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Foltz Fine Art. This exhibition is a celebration of the artists’ achievements, and an exploration of the new directions they are taking in their practices.

Peter Healy (Irish, b. 1973)
Peter Healy is an Irish artist with a background in illustration, now residing in Houston, Texas. He works in series as well as individual paintings, drawings, and assemblage, using a variety of mediums, including oil paint, acrylic, ink, pencil, collaged fabric, assembled wood/ various 3d objects and paper. Healy tries to let ideas come to him and sometimes let the pieces speak to him through their creation using editing as part of the process. They are usually colorful and often try to illustrate the contrast of living in the sparsely populated Fermanagh countryside of his youth in contrast with living in large cities with diverse populations. Having lived in Ireland, England, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and now Houston, these experiences have influenced his work in his attempts to represent population, architecture, and nature in his artwork.
ARTIST STATEMENT
A lot of the time the shapes in my paintings and drawings are like characters or individuals trying to coexist in a space on canvas or paper, just like we do in cities. In some series I am with the viewer looking through a window or down a tunnel at forms floating in space. Sometimes the shapes go off the edge; I want the viewer to think “What's around the corner?”, much like we all wonder what’s around the next corner in our everyday lives. I am interested in relationships between the objects I make, movement, landscapes or environments, composition, and space.
My assemblage work is all about collaging 2d/ 3d forms. A lot of the time it’s about reusing wood and material to give it a second life. It’s like making a jigsaw puzzle whilst inventing the pieces. When hurricanes happen there is so much material ruined. I wanted to find a way to reuse it and mix it with drawing or painting. It also gives me the opportunity to make unusual shapes.
In general, I always loved getting lost in paintings, so I want the viewer to do the same. I want to make work that takes people away. The landscapes I looked out across over the years always make me think of the road ahead, distance not yet covered and the possibilities for the future. So, I try to emulate that feeling in my work.

Matt Messinger (b. 1974)
713.521.7500
www.foltzgallery.com
Matt Messinger is an artist based in Houston, TX. He studied graphic design at the Art Institute of Houston and has had an active studio practice over the past 20 years. His work has been exhibited widely throughout Houston, including exhibitions in Houston at Foltz Gallery, Reeves Fine Art, Devin Borden Gallery, Lawndale Art Center, and Deborah Colton Gallery. Messigner’s work can also be seen at his studio at Hardy & Nance Studios in Houston’s Downtown Art Warehouse District.
Messinger is best known for paintings which incorporate matte surfaces with symbolic images, generally in black and white. Meticulous fabric collage, often layered from found household linens or flour sacks, creates a neutral ground which accentuates the flatness of the painting surface. Subtle patterns of drips and graffiti simultaneously create an illusion of spacial depth, contradicting this flatness. It is within this field that Messinger combines visual quotations from popular culture, scientific diagrams, or animals – real and imagined. His paintings mix serious ideas and icons with lighthearted techniques and imagery. Messinger enjoys symbolism and can be inspired by anything from logos, advertisements and animals, something simple as a number, or as subtle as a texture. He scavenges pop detritus with an eye to nostalgia, humor, and subtle irony.

Kate Mulholland (b. 1987)
Kate Mulholland is an artist based in Houston, Texas, whose work bridges art and geology to explore narratives of time and Earth's evolving landscapes. She studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and earned her BFA from the University of Houston while pursuing Geosciences, an interdisciplinary foundation that informs her practice.
Mulholland’s paintings and paper-based works have been widely exhibited, with notable recognition in New American Paintings (Issue #144, 2019) and inclusion in the permanent collection of Houston Endowment. Her work is held in research institutions and private collections worldwide and was recently featured in collaboration with K2 Sports for their Winter 2025 snowboard line.
Through her art, Mulholland emphasizes public accessibility to science, blending uncanny beauty with layered histories of the natural world. Her practice offers a unique perspective that connects art history, geological narratives, and human ecology.
Artist Statement
My fascination with nature's mechanics and the environment began in childhood, hunting fossils, arrowheads, and natural clays along Lake Erie’s shoreline in the U.S. Midwest. Today, I reinterpret geological field research and painting to explore Earth's physical creation, offering a deeper look into environmental issues and the cognitive dissonance we experience around them. My work celebrates the beauty and complexity of the natural world, inspiring a sense of wonder and connection.
In my practice, I collect geological data shaped by the forces of time and reinterpret it into landscapes or abstracted portraits of temporal layers. Just as sand and soil form beneath our feet, these visual accumulations undergo erosion—each layer becoming a memory, an erosion event, combining to create a composite image of time. This terrain-making process forms my work's conceptual foundation, reflecting the interplay between natural forces and human perception.
Since the turn of the last century, abstraction in Western art has sparked lively discussions, with some viewing it as challenging the status quo. In contrast, others celebrate realism for its trustworthiness and relatability. It's understandable that the general public may find abstraction less accessible, given its departure from the familiar mimicry of realism. Similarly, science also presents a fascinating duality: while we enjoy the benefits of modern medicine and fossil fuels, there is often a gap in understanding the quest for new alternatives. My work aims to bridge this gap by transforming the fear of the unknown into an invitation for curiosity. By blurring the lines between artistic and scientific literacy, I encourage viewers to engage with the work deeper, empowering them to explore and question without needing technical expertise.
This approach opens new avenues for appreciation and understanding, fostering a more inclusive dialogue around art and science. Whether through subtle visual cues or data embedded in the titles, my paintings are composites of my interests— geological history, human ecology, and the processes that create memory. They blur the boundaries between landscape and abstraction, creating "Trojan horses" of uncanny beauty that reflect the layered complexity of our world.
