PLASTICIEN PLURIDISCIPLINAIRE, ERNESTO NOVO EST À LA FOIS PEINTRE, LIVE PERFORMER, INFOGRAPHISTE, ET DÉCORATEUR. APRÈS DES ANNÉES PASSÉES À VOYAGER, IL A DECIDÉ DE S’ORIENTER VERS LA PEINTURE SUR GRAND FORMAT À TRAVERS DES PERFORMANCES LIVE INSPIRÉES PAR LA MUSIQUE ET LE POP ART.

A MULTI-FACETED PLASTICIAN, ERNESTO NOVO IS AT THE SAME TIME A PAINTER, LIVE PERFORMER, COMPUTER ILLUSTRATOR AND INTERIOR DECORATOR. AFTER YEARS OF TRAVELLING THE WORLD, HE DECIDED TO FOCUS ON PAINTING ON BIG FORMATS THROUGH LIVE PERFORMANCES INSPIRED BY MUSIC AND POP ART.

Raconte-nous ton parcours.

Mes premiers souvenirs de dessin c’est à 6 ans, ma soeur m’apprenait à dessiner.

En fait j’ai toujours aimé dessiner, gribouiller. À un moment j’avais pas le choix, quand il a fallu apprendre un métier, plutôt que d’aller à l’usine Q»HP WYtMtYt MHPYL \UL WYtWH KL HUZ n 5PJL HÄU d’intégrer les Arts Décos.

Apres avoir obtenu mon premier cycle je suis parti à Strasbourg faire une spécialisation comm et illustration. Après l’obtention de mon diplôme en 1990 je me suis fait mon book, je suis monté à Paris et j’ai commencé à travailler dans l’illustration pour la presse cinéma et musicale (Nova entre autre), la création de personnages pour des dessins animés, puis je suis rentré dans une agence de presse spécialisée dans l’infographie et le graphisme. À côté de ça depuis 2006 je développe un boulot de live painting, à chacune de mes expos je fais une performance live...

Tell us how you got into art.

As far as i can remember i always loved drawing, doodling. At some point i had no choice, i had to learn a job, so instead of working hard labor in a factory i decided to take a 2 year course in Nice, with the hope of getting into the Arts Decos school. From there i moved to Strasbourg to specialize in advertising and illustration.

Once i graduated in 1990 i moved to Paris and started working as an illustrator for Music and Movie magazines (such as Nova Mag), i created characters for animated movies, then i got hired by a publishing agency specialized in graphic design.

Apart from that since 2006 i have been doing a lot of live painting, at every exhibition i have i like to give the audience a live performance.

Je puise beaucoup dans la culture populaire, la “Junk Culture”, qu’elle soit américaine ou européenne.

Quelle est ta relation avec la musique.

J’ai toujours aimé sortir, que ce soit pour soutenir des DJ’s que j’aime bien ou aller voir des concerts. J’ai d’ailleurs fait beaucoup de Å`LYZ L[ K»HMÄJOLZ WV\Y KLZ ZVPYtLZ L[ KLZ clubs. Mais quand je sortais je ne peignais pas et quand je peignais je ne sortais pas, et ca me stressait de peindre seul, il me manquait le monde, l’énergie. Partant de ce principe je me suis dis “pourquoi pas essayer de lier les deux, peindre en Live lors d’une fête” ce qui en plus permet de montrer le savoir-faire d’un peintre, comment se construit une toile.

Your relationship to Music. i always liked hanging out, either in clubs to go support DJ’s i like or going to concerts. I actually KPK H SV[ VM Å`LYZ HUK WVZ[LYZ MVY NPNZ HUK night clubs. But my problem was, when i hung out i wouldn’t paint, and when i painted then i couldn’t hang out, plus i hated painting alone, i missed the crowd, the atmosphere, the energy...

So from there i thought “why not try to mix both, paint live at gigs” which led to me doing live performances. Plus this way i can show how a painter works, how a painting is created.

;H JVUULJ[PVU H]LJ >Y\UN& J’ai approché Tex lors d’une soirée et je lui ai dit que j’aimerais bien collaborer avec la marque, que j’apprécie depuis longtemps. Wrung a un rapport à l’image qui me plaît, on a lié nos styles dans un premier temps avec une collaboration pour laquelle j’ai réalisé un tee shirt James Brown qui sort pour la collection Automne Hiver, puis d’autres modèles qui sortiront pour la collection Printemps été 2013.

Toutes ces collabs tournent autour de l’imagerie “black” ça peut être un réalisateur, un artiste qui a marqué le Hip Hop, la Soul ou la Funk des années 70, un sportif... la marque a adhéré à mon travail, je fais meme le mannequin pour eux à l’occasion (rires).

/V^ KPK `V\ JVUULJ[ ^P[O >Y\UN& One day i approached my friend Tex and told him i’d like to do some collab work with the brand, which i had known and appreciated for a long time. Wrung has a way of creating images that i like, and they liked my work around music, ZV ^L JVTIPULK IV[O ^P[O H ÄYZ[ JVSSHI MVY which i designed a James Brown Tshirt that will be released this season, and i did other designs for the Spring Summer 2013 collection as well.

All the collabs we’ve done revolve around “Black” culture: it can be a movie maker, an PUÅ\LUJPHS HY[PZ[ MYVT /PW /VW :V\S VY -\UR form the 70s, an athlete... the brand and i really clicked, i even work as a model for them sometimes (laughs).

Ton actu et tes projets à venir.

J’ai des projets de déco pour des clubs et des restos, des apparitions dans des clips, le design de la pochette du prochain single de la chanteuse Imany avec Tété. J’ai terminé de peindre un piano pour le projet “Play me i’m yours”, ce qui a donné des idées à des gens, et je vais donc peindre sur des guitares. Et bien sûr vous pouvez aussi me retrouver tous les 2èmes Vendredi du mois a la Bellevilloise, lors de la soirée “Big Bang Gang” pour une perfo live.

What are your current and future projects.

I have some projects of interior decoration for clubs and bars, paintings for music videos, i should design the cover artwork for the single VM ZPUNLY 0THU` MLH[\YPUN ;L[L 0 Q\Z[ ÄUPZOLK painting a piano for this project “Play me i’m yours”, which led to some people contacting me to paint guitars. And of course, you can see me perform live every 2nd Friday of the month at club La Bellevilloise for the gig “Big Bang Gang”.

NÉ DANS LA BANLIEUE EST DE PARIS À LA FIN DES ANNEES 60, SES PASSIONS D’ ADO AMÈNENT WILEE À SE GOINFRER DE FILMS, ET GOÛTER AU DIVERSES FACETTES DE LA CULTURE HIP-HOP.

BORN IN THE EAST SUBURB OF PARIS AT THE END OF THE 60’S, A TEENAGER WILEE QUICKLY BECOMES PASSIONATE ABOUT MOVIES, AND THE DIFFERENT FACETS OF HIP HOP CULTURE.

D’abord assistant sur des tournages, il rencontre un réalisateur qui lui propose un job d’assistant photo.

He begins as a roadie on movie sets, then meets a director who offers him a job as an assistant photographer.

Après deux ans d’initiation, il se lance dans la photographie au sein de la presse musicale, combinant son nouveau métier à sa passion pour la musique. En faisant ses premières armes au sein des magazines ;V_ .L[ )\Z` L[ 7V^LY PS JVUÄYTLYH sa volonté d’en faire sa profession.

After two years of apprenticeship, he decides to get somes jobs on his own in the musical magazines industry, in order to combine both his passions for photography and music. After working for magazines 1Tox, Get Busy and Power, Wilee makes the choice to become a professional photographer.

Il travaille pendant dix ans dans ce milieu, passant de support en support de plus en plus renommés (R.E.R., Groove, Trax, Rock Sound, Rolling Stone, Muzik, etc…) avant de s’orienter vers la mise en scène et la direction artistique.

He works for ten years in the french music magazine industry, and establishes his name by working for more and more prestigious publications (R.E.R., Groove, Trax, Rock Sound, Rolling Stone, Muzik, etc…), before moving into art direction.

C’est à ce moment-là qu’il s’initie à la vidéo, au montage et au graphisme, pour se tourner naturellement vers l’édition.

Il initie un projet de portfolio thématique (Sens) dans lequel il fait intervenir graphistes, illustrateurs et photographes autour d’une thématique. Puis il réalise deux folioscopes autour de l’artiste Yaze, édité via Passages d’Encre.

Tout étant portraitiste, il étend sa sensibilité et son savoir-faire dans divers milieux de l’image.

Wilee naturally gets into video, movie editing and graphic design, and then publishing.

He successfully launches an art portfolio called “Sens” in which he gathers graphic designers, illustrators and photographers around a theme.

Then he creates two folios around artist Yaze, which are published through Passages d’Encre.

While remaining a portrait maker, Wilee keeps on expanding his sensitivity and savoir-faire into all aspects of image.
