£3,500 gifting to hospital

ur volunteers presented North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust with £3,500 at a ceremony that took place in July. The money, surplus taken from the WRVS tea bar at West Cumberland Hospital over the past two years, will help pay for medical equipment for the elderly care ward at the hospital. Sue Collins, Head of Services for the North West, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be able to hand over this money to a really worthwhile cause. We would like to say a massive thank you to all the volunteers and staff who have made the tea bar so successful.” “I would like to thank WRVS for this gift and also for their years of service, providing a buffet bar run by volunteers in A&E at West Cumberland Hospital,” said Interim Chief Executive Dr Neil Goodwin.

orkshire-born Helen Hailstone has been appointed as a new Service Delivery Manager. “Eight years ago, I decided it was time to give something back to my local community,” she says, “and having seen the impact of crime on both victim and perpetrator, I became a Magistrate (Justice of the Peace) at Salford, a challenging area of Greater Manchester. “I enjoy working with colleagues and partners to try and make a difference.

“It was partly my experiences as a magistrate that attracted me to the job at WRVS,” she explains, “along with the role’s broad range of responsibilities – which is something I have always thrived on at work. I love a challenge! “When I do have a little bit of spare time remaining, I go to the gym and enjoy walking with friends. “I am a member of a reading group and also potter in the garden, trying to ‘grow my own’.”

A lunch club for more than 30 elderly residents may be forced to close due to funding cuts. The Alsager Luncheon Club has been running twice a week since 1975 but faces an uncertain future after Cheshire East Council announced it could no longer continue to provide funding. The club is looking for volunteers to offer a helping hand and prevent its closure. Anyone wishing to volunteer is being urged to contact Jenny Basnett on 01270 877139.
