A new on-ward service is coming to Sheffield this autumn

T

he first WRVS on-ward service is to be launched in Sheffield this autumn. The 12-month pilot will send volunteers onto one of the main orthopaedic wards at Northern General Hospital to help look at the needs of older

patients. They will help patients with eating and drinking and will be a friendly face with time to talk should the patient want a chat. Service Delivery Manager Paul Taylor said: “We are thrilled to be the first area in the UK to

offer this type of service and we’re looking forward to rolling it out between October and December.” If anyone is interested in volunteering for this exciting new service please get in touch with Paul on 07714 898589.

TV chef James Martin pops in

elebrity chef James Martin visited the WRVS shop in Scarborough Hospital in June. Yorkshire born, James made his first television appearance back in 1996. He is the presenter of the popular BBC television programme Saturday Kitchen. He popped by as part of a food programme he is filming at the hospital and met with a number

t the age of 71, most people want to put their feet up. But not Winifred Broadbent. A Huddersfield Royal Infirmary volunteer, Winifred will be abseiling 197ft down Baitings Dam in Huddersfield on 24 September. And it’s not the first time! Winifred abseiled at Salts Mill in Shipley and from the Humber Bridge ten years ago. “I love testing my strength – and what better way to do it than abseiling?” says Winifred. “I am really excited for the day to arrive and cannot wait for the thrill of abseiling and showing the youngsters how it is done.” of volunteers to ask them about the products sold in the shop. The programme makers look to make a difference to the way hospitals cater for their patients and to change people’s perceptions of hospital food. The programme is due to air from October as one of a five-part series that will run on BBC1.
