volunteers £12,500 gift for Huntingdon to the rescue Broomfield E CAMBRIDGESHIRE

ight volunteers were called out during the preChristmas winter weather to help passengers stranded at Huntingdon railway station, an important link for journeys to both London Kings Cross and Peterborough. One plucky volunteer had to dig their car out of

the snow in order to come to the rescue. Another battled through Christmas crowds and lengthy queues at the local supermarket to get food for the hungry travellers. By 1.30pm the volunteers were able to hand out hot drinks, sandwiches and biscuits. They served hot meals at 3.30pm and didn’t leave for home until 6pm.

taff and volunteers at Chelmsford’s Broomfield Hospital WRVS coffee shop presented the hospital with £12,500. The money will go towards equipment and services at the St Andrew’s Centre and will be the first major financial contribution given to the specialist unit. Dedicated to the treatment of burns and plastic surgery, the centre will put the money

towards helping patients who need critical reconstruction surgeries to the face and neck. Senior nurses and consultants from the centre received the cheque and praised the volunteers’ dedication and kindness. A bouquet of flowers was also presented to Celine Wells as a special thank you. She has dedicated five hours a week for the past 23 years, working at the coffee shop in the hospital.

Southend grandmother awarded MBE One of our dedicated volunteers has been awarded with an MBE. Nora Goodman, retired nurse and committed grandmother, was presented with the accolade for her services in the Southend community. The ceremony was held at Buckingham Palace, with Prince Charles presenting the distinguished awards.

“I was so amazed, so proud, so honoured. I joined WRVS doing Meals on Wheels, and I am also a caseworker for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association,” says Nora. “I help look after veterans, mostly from the Second World War, and also those coming back from Afghanistan.”
