Three receive long-service medals Long service rewarded

Long-service medals were presented to Annice Waddell and Margaret Hill at Alnwick Stroke Club in December. Local Service Co-ordinator for the Getabout Northumberland Volunteer Car Scheme Roz Tinlin presented the medals to Annice (left) for 30 years service and Margaret (right) for 12 years service. Congratulations to both.

T

hree Books on Wheels volunteers were awarded long-service medals recently. Service Delivery Manager Derek Hails thanked Margaret Wheelan, Elaine Hurry and Jane Osborn, who have been with us for many years now, for all their dedication. The awards were handed out during a Christmas Lunch held for volunteers in the Darlington area. It also proved a perfect opportunity to have

a chat about new plans for the area. It’s been a hectic old time in Darlington, with Darlington Community Support Services and Darlington Books on Wheels Service now operating as part of the larger Tees Valley area. Hectic time North East Head of Services Chris Graham gave a talk about the new style of working and explained how opportunities for

volunteers are to be broadened and made much more flexible and friendly for clients. Every Christmas, staff from the nearby Student Loans Company (SLC) have an inhouse ‘Best Dressed Hamper’ competition as part of their celebrations, with the finished hampers being donated to service users as a special treat. All the volunteers and staff from both WRVS and SLC had a wonderful time delivering the hampers and spreading Christmas cheer.

Getabout scheme needs volunteer drivers We’re asking Tynedale residents to help out as volunteer drivers in a car sharing scheme. The ‘Getabout’ scheme uses volunteer drivers in their own cars to provide door-to-door transport for people who are unable to use their own private vehicles or public transport. For more information, contact Roz Tinlin, WRVS Getabout Co-ordinator, on 07834 753387 or email roz.tinlin@wrvs.org.uk.
