Sunshine Club celebrates 50th anniversary
N
estling in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside is the delightfully named Inkberrow Over 60s Sunshine Club. The club, which was started by 85-year-old Betty Wilkes and a couple of her friends in 1960, still meets every other Thursday.
T
he West Midlands region has gifted almost £300,000 to local hospitals during the last nine months. The largest single amount of £72,000 went to Worcester Royal for improving the environment for bereaved relatives visiting the hospital mortuary. £45,000 has been gifted to the Birmingham Women’s Hospital to enhance patient care. Selly Oak has received £5,000 for walking aids for the physiotherapy team to use in the re-enablement unit, which helps people learn how to walk again after serious, debilitating injury. “I am delighted that we have been able to gift so much in such a short period,” says Head of Services Sam Ward. “The volunteers deserve every credit for the work they do in our hospitals. Without them we couldn’t raise this sort of money and help so many older people.”
In its heyday the club had 84 members that went on holiday together, and did lots of other exciting things. Although these days there are fewer members, the club still has a number of very enthusiastic attendees who organise games, followed by tea and a quiz, a guest speaker and a film show every fortnight. If you would like to join the club contact Allison Cross on 07740 404084 or email her at allison.cross@wrvs.org.uk
