What a Gray day! ELGIN
Volunteers gathered for the official opening of a café and shop at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin this spring. The facility was set up through a partnership between WRVS and NHS Grampian. Former NHS Grampian Chairman Jim Royan cut the ribbon to declare the facility open. “This is a pretty monumental occasion for Dr Gray’s,” he said.

n January this year Margaret Miller, one of our longstanding volunteers, was awarded for seven decades of community work at the Evening Times’ Community Champions awards. If that’s not enough, Margaret was also a finalist in the Evening Times’ Scotswoman Of The Year 2010 award, highlighting local
champions who give their time to help people and communities in Scotland. Announced in January this year, the accolade went to Eileen McCallum. Margaret, who turned 100 last year, first volunteered for WRVS in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. After that, she founded the Lightburn
WRVS Harmony Stroke Club in Shettleston, which has offered help to stroke victims for more than 35 years. Margaret continues to volunteer at the Stroke Club once a week, along with her daughter Jean. “Volunteering at the Stroke Club helps keep me active and lively,” says Margaret.
The Shetland Recovery and Resilience team, called upon to help at emergencies, attended an exercise at Sumburgh Airport this March. A test to check response times among the emergency services and other agencies, the exercise saw WRVS volunteers providing sandwiches and drinks for 100 people. The three volunteers and their Team Leader Kim Collins helped until 11.30pm.
