RING 2015 EVENTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FERNWOOD BOTANICAL GARDEN:
Kokomo Glass Bus Tour Friday, April 10, 7am–5pm The discovery of hundreds of natural gas wells in Indiana in the 1880s brought many entrepreneurs and glass factories to the area. This tour will visit one of the oldest operating glass factories, the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company, who supplied stained glass to great artists such as Louis Tiffany, J & R Lamb, and John LaFarge, and continues to make beautiful glass today. Watch the process of making sheet glass, blown glass, and glass beads, then visit their Shop to purchase items produced by local artisans. After lunch (on your own), we head to the Greentown Glass Museum to see a huge collection of glass products from the Indiana Tumbler and Goblet Company, also known as Greentown Glass. Items produced at the glass factory, which burned down in 1903, are highly collectible and sought after. Cost is $72 per person (Fernwood members $60). Call Fernwood at (269)695-6491 before March 27 to make reservations. Mention the announcement in this catalog to receive the Fernwood member discount.

VISITING ARTISTS
INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT:
Marion Maier
PEARL DICK Pearl Dick was born in Toledo, OH in 1977 where she believes that glass was initially ingrained in her consciousness. Her family moved to Southeastern CT when she was nine and she considers New England her home. Pearl studied glass and painting at Alfred University in New York and moved to the Pacific NW upon graduation in 1998 to pursue a career in glass art. In 2003, Pearl relocated to Chicago, where she realized her first major artistic achievements in her debut at SOFA Chicago in 2005 and her first solo show at Habatat Gallery in 2006. Her work has since been exhibited in galleries, public art exhibitions and private residences throughout the US. In 2007, Pearl was integral in the inception of the Glassworks Program through Cooperative Image Group, a local nonprofit organization providing arts education to youth in underserved communities throughout Chicago. She is currently the Artistic Director of Ignite Glass Studios in Chicago where she continues her artistic practice along with the development of educational and community outreach programs. ROBIN KITTLESON A professional studio artist for over 20 years, Robin focuses on creating work that is unique and beautiful yet always functional. Pulling from a graphic design background, she mixes a love for color, texture and patterns with technically advanced kilnforming, printmaking and coldworking techniques to create one–of–a–kind pieces. Robin has a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis with additional studies completed under many leaders in the glass industry. She teaches both graphic design and kilnforming classes throughout the Midwest.
As a hobbyist, Marion Maier has enjoyed needle arts, paint crafts and pottery. Upon her retirement from the State of Michigan, she was encouraged by a friend to take a TGIF class at Water Street Glassworks. It was so enjoyable that she enrolled in more classes (glass and welding) and began volunteering at WSG. Last year she accepted the responsibility of teaching the Beginning Fused Glass class. Marion found working with adults was a wonderful experience; they came inspired and ready to learn. Later, when the opportunity arose, she eagerly accepted the offer to work with the Fired Up! after school program students. She loves the teenage students and their interest in improving techniques and adding new skills. Some of Marion’s work can be seen in the Dorris Akers Gallery at Water Street Glassworks. "I LIKE A QUOTE BY NELSON MANDELA: 'EDUCATION IS THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON WHICH YOU CAN USE TO CHANGE THE WORLD.' THAT SAYS WHAT I THINK IS IMPORTANT IN THE SCOPE OF WSG."
