NEW PROGRAM:

CARDEA BEADS Cardea Beads is a program designed to support families coping with serious illness. Patients of all ages can tell their story, using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their treatment path. Over time, the string of beads becomes a keepsake that tells a story of strength, courage and hope. Patients, family members and friends are invited to come to the flameworking studio and create their own beads or donate their time to make beads for other patients. The Cardea Bead program creates a tangible expression of your loved one’s journey. WSG provides training for volunteers, friends and family members. There is no minimum commitment for number of beads produced or hours volunteered. Materials are provided at no cost to participants thanks to a grant from Lakeland Health Foundation. The Cardea Beads program is supported by Marie Yeager Cancer Center and Berrien County Cancer Service. Contact Lynne at 269-925-5555 to participate.

water street glassworks visiting artists shawn watt Growing up, Shawn Watt was always finding outlets for creativity and ways to learn new skills, whether it was tinkering with machines or painting his friends' skateboards. After taking his first Water Street Glassworks course in 2006, he dove in head-first taking more classes and pleading for a job shortly thereafter. Shawn gained experience at Ox-Bow (Saugatuck, MI) and Penland School of Craft (Penland, NC) where he trained with Italian glass Maestro Davide Salvadore. He began working as a teaching assistant for Jerry Catania at both Water Street Glassworks and OxBow. He then spent several years cultivating his skills and style as a full-time glassblower at Silver Dollar City, Branson, MO. Now the Master Glassblower there, Shawn continues to work with glass and metal in collaboration with other artists and studios. WSG is thrilled to have Shawn back at home to teach and share his passion and expertise!

water street glassworks visiting artists My introduction to working with hot glass was the year I was given a glassblowing workshop for Christmas. I didn't know it at the time, but it was also the event that would eventually lead me to a career change. You could call it serendipity that I was introduced to an artist who taught lampworking and I found it was a way to create tiny glass gems out of my home studio and that led to designing jewelry and creating my line, that I now sell through fine art shows and galleries. Working with the hot glass is one of my favorite parts of the design process. I find it mesmerizing watching a rod of glass melt in the torch. I primarily work in shape and color because I love the pure color of the glass. You will also find my signature hand-formed glass leaves in just about every design. I approach my pieces as I would a painting combining different beads and elements to create depth and light. Each piece has a multitude of semi-precious gems that are wire-worked throughout the piece to provide movement and interest. I especially look forward to teaching at Water Street since some of the artists there are the ones responsible for starting me on my journey.
