The pair have currently settled in Southwest Michigan. Drawing inspiration from natural forms as well as unique visual properties inherent to glass, the design team develops work ranging from functional vessels to abstract and monumental sculpture.

Harnessing the unique experience of each individual, the pair works to develop techniques stemming from Venetian, Czech, and American glass art traditions. One of the most important traditions of the American Glass Art movement that they hope to emulate and carry on is that of sharing their love for art, glass, and glass making!

FALL 2018 NEWS & EVENT

COMMUNITY OUTREACH: FIRED UP! TEEN ART PROGRAM

ALL OF US IN THE LIGHTS:

NEON EXHIBIT BY ANDREA OLENIZCAK & TAYLOR KURRLE ! OPENS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 6 - 9PM Former Oxbow student/instructors; Andrea Oleniczak and Taylor Kurrle- Masters of Fine Arts candidates at UW-Madison. examine the language of equality, unity, and separation in a new exhibit of NEON works at The Dorris Akers Gallery. The pieces are the product of a summer the duo has spent bending neon, learning how to program, and examining language use. Kurrle and Oleniczak turn pronouns and the language of identification into brightly lit poems and patterns, giving the viewer a visual invitation to reflect on the way we use language to relate to others. After entering graduate school last year, Oleniczak and Kurrle found themselves talking a lot about what "equality" meant to them in a new context. The two, who have been partners for twelve years, previously worked professionally in the glass craft community, and found re-entering academia to be a bit of a culture change. "Everyone is talking about equality, but it’s almost like no one is practicing it," Oleniczak says of the campus environment. "And we had the luxury of coming from a craft background, where no one was talking about it, but everyone was practicing it."

WATER STREET GLASSWORKS FALL 2018 NEWS & EVENTS NEW PROGRAM: CARDEA BEADS Cardea Beads is a program designed to support families coping with serious illness. Patients of all ages can tell their story, using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate milestones they have achieved along their treatment path. Over time, the string of beads becomes a keepsake that tells a story of strength, courage, and hope.

Hello glass family! I am so excited to announce my full-time return to WSG. I have spent the last 5 years as the studio manager/product designer for Hot Shop Valpo.

During this time we supplied over a dozen galleries, completed several large public installations, taught hundreds of students the art of glassblowing, and toured the Midwest doing art fairs.

I am extremely proud of all we accomplished and excited to see where HSV goes in the future. As many of you know, I started at WSG in the Fired Up! program when I was 12. The studios provided me with endless inspiration and experience and really formed the glass artists (and person) I am today. I’m thrilled to be able to give some of that back. Water Street Glassworks is in a great position to really take off this year, we have an amazing staff, a freshly rebuilt furnace, and a really exciting buzz around the arts district. My goals for the year at WSG:

Relaunch the Fired Up! program.

Expand the WSG production line.

Patients, family members, and friends are invited to come to the flameworking studio and create their own beads or donate their time to make beads for other patients. The Cardea Bead program creates a tangible expression of your loved one’s journey. Water Street Glassworks provides training for volunteers, friends, and family members. There is no minimum commitment for number of beads produced or hours volunteered. Materials are provided at no cost to participants thanks to a grant from Lakeland Health Foundation. The Cardea Beads program is supported by Marie Yeager Cancer Center and Berrien County Cancer Service. Please join us on the 4th Friday of the month for Open Studio, if you are interested in joining this program.

Continue to improve the studio functionality/efficiency.

Work to provide the opportunities that were available to me for passionate glass students. Page 8 • WATER STREET GLASSWORKS • FALL 2018 • Ph: 269-925-5555 • www.waterstreetglassworks.org

WATER STREET GLASSWORKS VISITING ARTISTS

SPECIAL TOPICS – GLASS SPIN TO WIN!: CENTRIFUGAL CASTING

ROBIN KITTLESON

JOHN RYSKA

John Ryskza II began working with glass at Vincennes University, where he took Scientific and Decorative Glass Blowing as an elective. During that same time, John saw an exhibit by an artist whose work included sculptures with incorporated neon lights. John says he couldn’t stay out of the gallery and would make detours in his schedule just to catch a few more glimpses of the moody, aura-involving art. This exhibit, together with the scientific glassblowing class, had such an impact on him that he decided to study neon instead of graphic art. John enrolled in the National Neon Institute in Benicia, CA, where the love of glass would take hold of his life. In Benicia,

A professional studio artist for over 20 years, Robin focuses on creating artwork that is unique and beautiful, yet always functional. Pulling from a graphic design background, she mixes a love for color, texture, and patterns with technically advanced kilnforming, printmaking, and coldworking techniques to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Robin has a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis with addtional studies completed under many leaders in the glass industry. She teaches both graphic design and kilnforming technique classes throughout the Midwest.

John immersed himself in glass. He studied neon and flameworking, started fusing glass, and frequently visited the glassblowing studios to watch and to learn. In 2003, John moved to Phoenix, AZ, to become a fulltime neon tube bender at Neon Nightscapes. He has continued his studies at the Mesa Art Center, the Sonoran Glass Art Academy, J Street Glass, and most recently in Murano, Italy. In 2007, John began teaching at J Street Glass. John now owns and runs Glass Phoenix in Michigan City, IN. Page 14 • WATER STREET GLASSWORKS • FALL 2018 • Ph: 269-925-5555 • www.waterstreetglassworks.org

Sat: December 8 & 9, (10am-3pm) OR Sun: December , (10am - 3pm) Instructor: Lynne Clayton Apply the principle of centrifugal force to ladle cast glass and - voila! - you get one-of-a-kind, beautiful bowls. Form bowl shapes in sand and press in patterns to create “one-use” molds. Pour in the glass and “spin” for a “winning” functional work of art. Expect to make several pieces. No experience required. All materials provided. Bring a lunch. $150.

SCULPTURE IN THE GARDEN: 3-DAY WORKSHOP Fri Sept 21 (6-8pm) Sat & Sun Sept 22 & 23

(10am - 3pm) Instructor: Eli Zilke& Jerry Catania

Sat & Sun, Oct 20 & 21(10am - 3pm) Instructor: Ekin Aytac & Josh Davids This course is designed for intermediate - advanced glass blowers. The goal of this course is to develop an understanding of the benefits of working hot, working fast, and taking chances. Managing bubble economics is a key process in achieving quality shape, form, and the desired thickness of any blown piece. Beginning with smaller vessels and building into larger vases and sculptural forms, students will be encouraged to hone their tooling and shaping skills with an emphasis on sharp edges and tight, controlled forms. $ 250.

Create your own ladle-cast glass & forged/fabricated metal sculptures for the garden in this intensive weekend workshop. Start by learning how to ladle molten glass into sand molds and move on to metal forging and welding. Expect to complete one or two garden sculptures by the end of the weekend. Dress for mess!
