SUMMER 2018 VISITING ARTIST  DONNA SAUERS My introduction to working with hot glass began the year I was given a glassblowing workshop for Christmas. I didn't know it at the time, but it was also the event that would lead me to a career change. You could call it serendipity... I was introduced to an artist who taught flameworking and I found it was a way to create tiny glass gems out of my home studio. This led to designing jewelry and creating my line that I sell through fine art shows and galleries. Working with hot glass is one of my favorite parts of the design process. It is mesmerizing watching a rod of glass melt in the torch. I primarily work in shape and color because I love the pure color of the glass. You will also find my signature hand-formed glass leaves in just about every design. I approach my pieces as I would a painting, combining different beads and elements to create depth and light. Each piece has a multitude of semi-precious gems that are wire-worked throughout the piece to provide movement and interest. I look forward to teaching at Water Street, especially since some of the artists there are responsible for starting me on my journey. Page 4 • WATER STREET GLASSWORKS • Summer 2018

WSG SPOTLIGHT:

LYNNE CLAYTON • WSG welcomed new Executive Director, Lynne Clayton, in June 2017. • Nick and Caty, my children started blowing glass at WSG in 2003. I had always wanted to experience it too, and in 2011, I finally succumbed to the call of the Glass Gypsies! • Glass is a metaphor for life to me: You make a plan, prepare, create, then must await the results; which are sometimes beyond your control. On occasion the creative result is exactly as you had pictured in your artist’s minds eye, other times serendipity intervenes, and a happy accident can become a new way to explore your artistic path. • WSG was (and is) in a growth stage as an organization. I joyfully bring many years of experience as a business owner, artist and arts educator to my new position as Executive Director. • I am grateful for the opportunity to serve, work, learn, and create art at WSG. It is an incredible organization made up of many dedicated, creative, volunteers and staff, and it is my privilege to be a small part of it.
