Luckily, World Animal Protection has an easy way for us to make an impact – sending a World Animal Gift to animal-loving friends and family this season. I’ve been working with them for the past few years and recently I visited their Zarnesti sanctuary in Romania. I will never forget being able to witness free happy bears in their natural habitat.

The Gossip Girls In the wild, female elephants often stay with their family for life and display deep emotion and great affection for one another. For elephants sold into the cruel entertainment industry, it’s a different story. Baby elephants are often taken from their mothers at a young age. They are beaten and endure ongoing physical and psychological abuse to become submissive enough to be able to give tourists rides or perform tricks. When they aren’t entertaining crowds of tourists, they’re often chained up all alone. The isolation breaks their hearts. Wassana, Beautiful Lotus and Pang Dow all lived separate lives of loneliness, abuse and 8
back-breaking labour in the entertainment industry and illegal logging. But when they were rescued by our partner Boon Lott’s elephant sanctuary (BLES), these girls found each other. Now they eat, swim, rest and play together and sanctuary staff have nicknamed them “The Gossip Girls”. It is here at BLES that they are finally able to live a life free from suffering. Machito still cries out sometimes, but at least now there is someone there to hear him and give him comfort. Confiscated by local authorities at just six months of age Machito (which means “little man”) arrived at our partner rehabilitation centre in Columbia (the AIUNAU) with marks and sores of where a rope had been tied around his arms to keep him tethered. His left arm wasn’t working properly and his long nails, which act as toes for sloths, were broken. One of the nails from his right foot is completely missing. And those were just the injuries we could see. Sloths snatched from the wild for the tourist trade suffer incredible emotional stress as well. Now Machito is on the long road to recovery. Given a proper diet, medical care, branches to climb on and his own warm wicker basket and blankets to curl up in, he can become the animal he should have been all along – wild and free.
Help abused sloths recover

We need to stop the demand for elephant rides and shows, hugs and selfies with tigers and lions by exposing the hidden suffering behind wildlife attractions. If you can ride, hug or have a selfie with a wild animal, then you can be sure it is cruel. Neil D’Cruze Head of Wildlife Research, World Animal Protection

Eric is a 17-year-old student in Makueni County, Kenya, whose dogs play an important role by protecting his family’s livestock from predators and thieves. When he brought his six dogs – Tiger, Simba, Chui, Puppy, Tusker and Kalinga, to get vaccinated, he told us that his dogs were not protected from rabies the previous year, and when an erratic and aggressive dog bit one of his beloved dogs, he had to make the heart-wrenching decision to put down his best friend. He wants to ensure that his dogs stay safe from rabies as well as avoid mass killings, which involve inhumane methods such as poisoning or clubbing in a misguided attempt to stop the spread of the disease.
Photo caption: Tiger and Simba (left) wait with other dogs Aska and Doggie (right) for their rabies vaccinations.
Working alongside the Kenyan government, 89,584 vaccinations were given to protect dogs in Makueni County in 2016 in an effort to stop inhumane culling in the name of rabies or other conflicts.
By giving a vaccination gift, you help save and protect dogs and people from rabies creating a healthier community for all.
