1. Hosting

What hosting? What is WordPress? ✗ You will need a server and domain name (website address). ✗ Find a company that will provide you with a server and/or website address to host your website. ✗ Two options – Free and paid. ✗ WordPress is a popular free content management system (CMS) that helps you to quickly build a website without any technical knowledge. 5

Free hosting ✗ Simply sign up for an account at http://wordpress.com for a free blog. ✗ But limited in many ways – Limited themes, plugins, customizations, no technical support, etc… ✗ Not recommended if you want to run a “serious website”.

6

Paid hosting ✗ Many good hosting companies out there such as Bluehost and Hostgator. ✗ Choose a plan and sign up an account with your chosen host. ✗ By “default”, they will provide you with an empty website. ✗ You will have to install WordPress by yourself – which is as simple as logging into the control panel that the host provides and clicking on “install WordPress”. 7

2. Initial Setup

Select new theme ✗Access Appearance > Themes > Add New Theme. ✗Search for a theme, choose one and install. ✗Activate the new theme. ✗Go to appearance > Customize. ✗Play around with the many options and customize your website as you see fit.

9

Recommended plugins ✗Access Plugins > Add New. ✗Search for a plugin, choose one and install. ✗Activate the new theme. ✗Recommended plugins to install – Cleantalk, Super Socializer, W3 Total Cache, WordFence, YOAST SEO, Ninja forms, WPS hide login.

3. Simple SEO

Simple SEO ✗Create 4 pages – About Us, Contact Us, Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. ✗Settings > Permalinks > Set to “Post Name”. ✗Register your website with Google, Bing/Yahoo webmaster tools.
