MAN CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED CHILD NEGLECT IN SUSPICIOUS DEATH Jackson police have charged Darwin Reid, 31, of Jackson, with Aggravated Child Neglect in an ongoing suspicious death investigation. On Feb. 26, 2016, Investigators learned that Zion Croom, age 4, had been transported to a local hospital with a severe head injury. Zion was later transferred to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Zion succumbed to his injury and died at LeBonheur on March 3. Based on the investigation, Zion had been left in the care of his mother’s boyfriend, Darwin Reid, at 56 Saint James Cove. Zion received the injury on Feb. 26 while in Reid’s care. Investigators conferred with medical personnel and learned that Zion would have presented immediate symptoms that showed that he was suffering from an injury. Evidence shows that Reid did not attempt to get Zion medical assistance. Zion’s autopsy results are pending and the manner and cause of death have not yet been fully determined. When the investigation is complete, the findings will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration of any additional charges.

CHILD KILLED TRAPPED UNDER CAR BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.—Rescuers were able to free a child trapped under a car early Sunday evening (March 13) but the 10-year-old boy eventually died from his injuries. The incident occurred on Felicia Street. An official police report was not available for this account, but one source told us the child may have knocked the car into gear and then somehow wound up under it while trying to get out. Emergency workers rushed to the scene with airbags that could be used to lift the car, but a witness managed to jack the vehicle up before they arrived. Paramedics treated the youth on the scene and took him to a Jackson hospital. Witnesses at the scene didn’t think the child was seriously hurt, but his condition worsened shortly after being taken to a Jackson hospital. Assistant police Chief Kelvin Evans said this morning the boy died while being transported to Vanderbilt.
PIT BULLS BANNED IN BROWNSVILLE BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.—If you own a pit bull dog you can keep it —so long as you follow the rules. But no new pits will be allowed in Brownsville. After action of the city board Tuesday night pit bulls an earlier ordinance making the dogs illegal in Brownsville was affirmed and an amendment allowing owners to conform was passed. The ordinance reaches even further, declaring possession of “those dogs declared vicious” as also barred from Brownsville. The old rules set forth how the dogs must be penned or housed and walked on a leash. It also requires they be spayed, neutered, micro-chipped and registered with the city. The new rules give owners 60 days to comply. If pit bull dogs or other vicious dogs are found out of compliance the city will seize the dog and it will not be returned to its owner.
