On WFMT, enjoy four performances from London’s great summertime tradition, the BBC Promenade Concerts in Royal Albert Hall, and don’t miss one of our final Carnegie Hall concerts of this season, Les Violons du Roy and La Capelle de Québec performing Bach’s B Minor Mass.

From the President & CEO Dear Member, This month, we are excited to bring you the latest masterpiece from Ken Burns – an epic 16-hour series tracing the history of Country Music. As only Ken can tell it, hear the story of this quintessentially American art form and how it evolved over the course of the 20th century through biographies of its most notable trailblazers. Also, don’t miss a lively star-studded concert special featuring contemporary country legends hosted by Ken from Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, and visit our special website at wttw.com/countrymusic. Also on WTTW, we bid farewell to the popular comedy-drama series 800 Words and embark on the final seasons of Poldark and Durrells in Corfu. On wttw.com, meet the real people who inspired the Durrells’ characters; look back at a 100-year-old scandal, when the “Black Sox” were accused of intentionally losing the 1919 World Series; and remember the Chicago-based WLS’s National Barn Dance, a popular country music radio program in the ’30s and ’40s. On WFMT, enjoy four performances from London’s great summertime tradition, the BBC Promenade Concerts in Royal Albert Hall. Four performances will air on Tuesday evenings, by the London Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony, the Vienna Philharmonic, and – for the super-lively Last Night – the BBC Symphony. On wfmt.com, you’ll find a collection of classical music selected by our staff that will help you fall into fall, a fall arts preview, and some classical works with a sense of humor. Your continued support is very much appreciated, and thanks for choosing WTTW and WFMT.

WTTW and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events present a free screening and discussion of POV: The Feeling of Being Watched. In the Arab-American neighborhood outside of Chicago where director Assia Boundaoui grew up, most of her neighbors believe they have been under surveillance for over a decade. While investigating their experiences, Assia discovers they were right, as she uncovers hundreds of pages of declassified FBI documents that prove her hometown was the subject of one of the largest counterterrorism investigations ever conducted in the U.S. before 9/11 – codenamed “Operation Vulgar Betrayal.” With unprecedented access, The Feeling of Being Watched weaves the personal and the political as it explores why Assia’s friends and neighbors fell under blanket government surveillance; confronts long-hidden truths about the FBI’s relationship to the community; examines why it feels as if they are still being watched today; and reveals how Assia grapples with the effects of a lifetime of surveillance on herself and her family. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. The film airs on WTTW11 and wttw.com on Monday, October 14 at 10:00 pm. This is a free event. For more information, please visit wttw.com/events.

Shakespeare & Hathaway

9/11 Inside the Pentagon

Secret Life of Dogs

Private inspector Frank Hathaway has always worked alone, but he is out of shape and low on cash. He joins forces with ex-hairdresser and people-person Luella (Lu) Shakespeare, and the two quickly discover that all is not as peaceful as it seems in their town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

On September 11, 2001, Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon, killing 184 people. What happened behind the walls of the Pentagon is a largely untold chapter in history. More than fifteen years later, survivors and first responders shed light on that tragic day.

The first of this four-part series revealing spectacular new insights into the way dogs understand us, love us, and in some cases, can dramatically save or enhance our lives, this film uncovers how the true success of their species is our mutually beneficial relationship.

POV: The Silence of Others The Silence of Others captures the first attempt in 77 years to prosecute crimes of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco (1939-1975). In a groundbreaking international court case, victims of re-education camps, child abduction, torture, and extrajudicial killings have come together to break their silence and confront perpetrators who, unbeknownst to much of the world, have enjoyed impunity for decades. Through the compelling contemporary story of the case and the personal journeys of several of its plaintiffs, The Silence of Others explores the shadows the past still casts upon the present in Spain.

CSO music director Riccardo Muti conducts concerts on three consecutive Sundays. Joined by cellist Yo-Yo Ma, he’ll explore 20th-century Russian music. He then leads late 19th-century music – Debussy, Puccini, Mascagni, Tchaikovsky – and an American and American-inspired concert.

WFMT presents several more productions featured during recent seasons. Included are Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus) with tenor Russell Thomas in the title role, and Bizet’s Carmen starring Ana María Martínez. Music director James Conlon conducts both.

From the BBC Proms Fall may be upon us, but before summer leaves, WFMT will sample a great summertime tradition from the British Isles: four concerts from the annual BBC Promenade Concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall, billed as “the world’s largest classical music festival.” We’ll begin with the London Philharmonic performing an all-Russian program, highlighted by Glazunov’s Symphony No. 5 and some of the short orchestral vignettes by Anatol Liadov. Then it’s back “home” for the City of Birmingham Symphony under the leadership of rising conductor Mirga GrazinyteTyla, with cellist Sheku KannehMason playing Elgar’s concerto and a rarely heard symphony by Moses Weinberg. The Vienna Philharmonic visited the Royal Albert Hall and brought violinist Leonidas Kavakos with them to play Korngold’s violin concerto, and the Philharmonic continues in an American-inspired vein with Dvorak’s New World. Finally, join us for the festival’s famous Last Night, when a large, diverse, and extremely enthusiastic audience will cheer on the BBC Symphony and several choirs under the direction of Sakari Oramo. There will be favorite opera arias performed by Jamie Barton, some marches, some ThreeCornered Hat music, and Last Night traditions such as the Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory, and Jerusalem. This is a co-presentation with American Public Media.

Tuesdays, September 3, 10, 17, 24, 9:00 pm 45589-2. [8:36] Johan Svendsen Two Icelandic Melodies – Iceland Sym/Petri Sakari. Chandos CHAN9028. [6:56] Sheynkman Variations on Two Russian Folksongs – Odessa Balalaikas. Nonesuch 79034-2. [6:51] 10:00 Midday with Lisa Flynn, 2019

Leonard Bernstein

The New York Philharmonic This Week: Lenny’s Playlist and Stravinsky The producers of The New York Philharmonic This Week have compiled some favorite performances from Leonard Bernstein’s long history with the orchestra. One of his own compositions is featured, of course, in this case the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, conducted by Alan Gilbert. Most of the performances, however, are conducted by “Lenny.” They include: the Gloria movement from an historic performance of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the New York Schola Cantorum choir and soloists Eileen Farrell, Shirley Verrett, Jon Vickers, and Donald Bell; works by Barber and Copland to represent Bernstein’s commitment to his fellow American composers; and the lyrical Adagietto movement from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, reminding us of the conductor’s devotion to Mahler’s music and the work he did to bring it to a wider audience. This month’s Philharmonic presentations also include Stravinsky’s Philharmonic, including a performance of his rarely heard Persephone, which he identified as a “melodrama” because it includes spoken narration along with vocal soloists and choir.

Bernard Labadie

From Carnegie Hall: Timeless Bach and Young Performers Johann Sebastian Bach did not give the title Mass in B Minor to the major work of sacred music that he completed in 1749, a year before his death. Instead, he named the individual sections: Missa (Kyrie and Gloria); Symbolum Nicenum (the Credo, using the words of the Nicene Creed); Sanctus; and Osanna/ Benedictus/Agnus Dei/Dona Nobis Pacem (the final portions of the Ordinary of the Latin Mass). Though some of the music was newly composed for the 1749 version, most of the music in the Mass is drawn from sacred music Bach had composed in earlier years, including portions of the many cantatas he wrote for the churches of Leipzig. Scholars of Bach’s music marvel at the way he created a coherent long piece out of so many disparate shorter excerpts. For the 2018-19 season at Carnegie Hall, Bernard Labadie led a performance of the B Minor Mass with the singers of La Chapelle de Québec and the instrumental ensemble called Les Violons du Roy (The King’s Violins). As the hall’s radio season winds down toward the end of September, we’ll air another of the annual Carnegie Hall concerts by the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, a Carnegie Hall-sponsored project bringing together young players from all over the country. Michael Tilson Thomas is the conductor.
