From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

This month, we’re excited to launch a new season of Chicago Stories, WTTW’s award-winning documentary series that uncovers the sweeping history, rich diversity, and breadth of human experience that shaped our great American city. Throughout the fall on Friday nights, we’ll bring you eight new films – kicking off in September with the stories of Leopold and Loeb, two affluent teenagers who committed what became known 100 years ago as the “Crime of the Century” in the shadows of Hyde Park; and The Black Sox Scandal , about the conspiracy to fix the 1919 World Series. Turn to page 4 for a behind-the-scenes look at this season.

Also on WTTW this month, watch for new episodes of six of our most popular how-to series, including America’s Test Kitchen, Pati’s Mexican Table, Cook’s Country, and This Old House. And in addition to new seasons of the popular Ridley and Van der Valk mysteries, we premiere Moonflower Murders, the sequel to Magpie Murders which follows book editor Susan Ryeland as she becomes embroiled in a new mystery on the sunny Greek island of Crete. Also, as the U.S. presidential election approaches, Frontline presents its essential in-depth exploration of the lives and political trajectories of the two candidates in Frontline: The Choice 2024

On WFMT, listen for performances from Ravinia Festival, a thrilling Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert featuring Music Director designate Klaus Mäkelä, and the return of rising young cellist Jan Vargas Nedvetsky to WFMT’s Introductions program. On Sounds Classical , hosts Kristina Lynn and LaRob K. Rafael explore a new project that traces the life and legacy of American bass-baritone Paul Robeson. And as we celebrate the 100th birthday of the iconic children’s music pioneer and longtime Chicagoan Ella Jenkins, Folkstage host Marilyn Rea Beyer brings together a group of top folk artists in WFMT’s Levin Studio for a special live tribute.

On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I hope you are as excited as I am about our fall season, and thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

Q&A BLACK SOX SCANDAL THE

A Q&A with The Black Sox Scandal Producer/Writer Eddie Griffin

This new episode of WTTW's history anthology series Chicago Stories, premiering on WTTW and wttw.com/chicagostories on Friday, September 27 at 8:00 pm, looks back on perhaps the first and most infamous scandal in sports history, when eight members of the Chicago White Sox

intentionally lost the 1919 World Series for a payout, changing the way the public perceived the sport for decades to come. WTTW producer and writer Eddie Griffin shares some thoughts about how the film was produced, the seismic effect this scandal had on the players’ lives and the game of baseball, and why it is important to tell this story.

Guide: This event took place more than a century ago. What makes it interesting today?

Eddie Griffin: Like many Chicago Stories, this story is foundational to our city. The Black Sox Scandal is part of the Chicago canon. But we’re talking about 1919 – each year it drifts further from our

Photo:

Eddie Cicotte

memories. It’s not a positive story and the Black Sox gave Chicago a black eye, but it’s our job to document what happened.

Guide: This film introduces us to some memorable characters, including the legendary “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. What was his story?

Griffin: Joe Jackson was one of the most gifted ballplayers that the world had ever seen, a household name in America. The White Sox acquired Jackson to help win a World Series. He was a star of stars, and Babe Ruth even said he copied his batting swing to look more like Joe Jackson’s swing. But what makes Shoeless Joe such a fascinating character is that he had the most to lose among any of the other Black Sox. He was in the prime of his career and adored by millions. Getting involved in the scandal should have been beneath him. You want to go back in time and say, “don’t do it, Joe!”

He told reporters that he had made peace with his banishment from baseball. But I don’t believe it. His courtroom testimony and actions later in life reveal a man tormented by his mistake.

Guide: Most Chicagoans are familiar with the name Charles Comiskey and its association with the former home of the White Sox. Who was he, and what do we learn about him in this film?

Griffin: Charles Comiskey was a pioneering baseball player in the 1890s. After he retired, he purchased the St. Paul Saints in 1900 and moved that team to his hometown of Chicago, where he eventually changed its name to the Chicago White Sox. He loved the organization and built the White Sox into one of the flagship franchises in Major League Baseball.

Flash forward a hundred years later, and Comiskey is often portrayed as a cheapskate and cited as the reason why his players fixed the World Series. But as we reveal in the film, that reputation was undeserved.

Guide: Sports betting is big business now, and there have been many

scandals involving both student athletes and professional teams. What is notable about this one?

Griffin: The Black Sox Scandal was baseball’s original sin, but was not the first instance of game fixing. Gambling was rampant, and over time, the integrity of the game became compromised. The Black Sox represent the moment in time where the nation said “That’s enough. We can’t allow this to continue.”

It’s important to understand that these were real people. Complicated and ultimately foolish…but real people.

Guide: What compelled the White Sox players to throw the World Series? What was in it for them? And how did the scandal affect their fans?

Griffin: As historian Richard Lindberg says in the film, “they were after the

almighty dollar.” And on the surface, that’s what it was about…money. But the truth of the matter was that they just really didn’t think they would get caught. Baseball fans were devastated. And the eight Black Sox players never regained their honor and never again played baseball.

Guide: Were there special challenges associated with capturing this story?

Griffin: The challenge with a subject that is more than a century old is the lack of archival images to show our viewers everything that happened. And the heart of the Black Sox story takes place off the baseball diamond and on cross-country trains, in dark hotel rooms and speakeasies, and ultimately, in a 1920s courtroom. So, we

shot recreation scenes with actors to fill in the missing pieces. We filmed on a moving train at The Illinois Railway Museum, we found a beautiful period specific courthouse in DeKalb County, and we turned The Gaslight Club at O’Hare into a swanky Manhattan lounge. We found a way to take viewers back in time.

Guide: What will viewers discover about the Black Sox scandal that might surprise them?

Griffin: One thing that I never knew and learned in researching the story was the fact that the Black Sox were acquitted at trial. There were no laws on the books that made gambling illegal, so they were found not guilty by the jury. They walked out of the courtroom thinking that they’d immediately be back in the game. But newly appointed baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis banished the Black Sox for eternity.

Guide: What is on the companion website?

Griffin: Viewers will have a chance to go into more depth about the Black Sox story, including some of the myths surrounding it. There are also stories about Charles Comiskey and an illustrated breakdown of the fixed plays in the 1919 World Series games, and a video about a baseball discovered in a time capsule that was allegedly from the Series.

Guide: What do you hope viewers will take away from this documentary?

Griffin: I hope viewers see the Black Sox players as three-dimensional characters. Yes, they were guilty. Yes, they fixed the World Series. And yes, they betrayed the nation for a quick dollar. But that doesn’t mean that they didn’t carry the guilt and shame around with them for the rest of their lives. You don’t have to forgive them. I don’t. But it’s important to understand that these were real people. Complicated and ultimately foolish… but real people.

This interview was condensed and edited for clarity.

Chicago Stories: Deadly Alliance –Leopold and Loeb

On a spring afternoon 100 years ago, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were affluent teenagers living in Kenwood, blocks from the University of Chicago, when they challenged themselves to commit “the perfect crime.” Driving around the neighborhood, they abducted Loeb’s 14-year-old cousin Bobby Franks, ruthlessly murdered him, and hid his body in a culvert. But the crime was far from perfect, and once convicted of the killing, only legendary defense attorney Clarence Darrow could save Leopold and Loeb from the gallows.

Folkstage

Born August 6, 1924, Ella Jenkins, the “First Lady of Children’s Music,” grew up in Hyde Park and began her pioneering career in Chicago. Her early call and response records, drawing on African American traditions, made it easy for audiences to participate. A champion of diversity long before the term became popular, she would go on to include a Mexican hand-clapping song, a Maori Indian battle chant, and even an American chain-gang lament, quietly revolutionizing children’s music. Her media savvy laid the groundwork for the field of children’s entertainment like Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood Folkstage honors Ella’s centennial with a live broadcast featuring Juan Dies of Sones de Mexico Ensemble, Bucky Halker, Susie Lofton, Shanta Nurullah, and guest commentator Fred Koch.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Just two days after Klaus Mäkelä was announced as the Music Director Designate of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the 28-year-old Finnish conductor and cellist was greeted with a thunderous ovation as he took the podium. On a Thursday night, Orchestra Hall was nearly at capacity and the excitement both on stage and in the audience was palpable. The program was centered on music of Shostakovich: his popular Cello Concerto No. 1 featuring cellist Sol Gabetta, and the powerful Symphony No. 10. With a nod towards Mäkelä’s interest in contemporary music, the program began with the U.S. premiere of his fellow countryman Sauli Zinovjev’s Batteria. For those in attendance, this concert will be remembered for the quality of the performance and as an important moment in the history of the 133-year-old orchestra.

Davóne Tines, who made his Met debut earlier this year in John Adams’s El Niño, has been described by The New York Times as a “pathbreaking singer…[who] is challenging traditions in classical music and using art to confront social problems.” Following his acclaimed Recital No. 1: Mass, Tines returns to Chicago with a new program “exploding” (rather than exploring) the repertoire of the American bass-baritone, actor, athlete, and activist Paul Robeson whom he describes as an artistic ancestor and hero. Davóne Tines joins WFMT to discuss his unique journey as a classical musician and to preview the upcoming performance of ROBESON at the Harris Theater next month.
