From the President & CEO
Dear Member,
Fall is now in full swing, with a consequential national election fast approaching. As you think about casting your vote, we’ll bring you a new American Experience – The American Vice President, tracing the evolution of the second-highest office from a constitutional afterthought to a position of political consequence. Focusing on the fraught period between 1963 and 1974, when a grief-stricken and then scandal-plagued America was forced to clarify the role of the vice president, this new film examines the passage and first uses of the 25th Amendment and offers a fresh perspective on succession in the executive branch. We’ll also present a live simulcast of the debate between the candidates for that office, J. D. Vance and Tim Walz, and they are also profiled in a new Frontline special. Also, don’t miss the Citizen Nation series highlighting youth civic engagement, and the VOCES series returns with two relevant stories about the Latino vote.
Also in October, our flagship local history series Chicago Stories continues on Friday nights with a nostalgic trip back to everyone’s favorite Amusement Parks; an exploration of the history of the Puerto Rican activists known as The Young Lords of Lincoln Park; an inside look at The Making of Playboy and its creator Hugh Hefner; and the eruption of rage and grief in Chicago after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination in When the West Side Burned. After watching these documentaries each Friday night, I hope you will explore the companion websites for extra content and, in the meantime, turn to page 4 for an interview with the writer and producer of Amusement Parks
This month, we’ll premiere a new season of Live from WFMT on Monday evenings from WFMT’s Levin Performance Studio. In October, Kerry Frumkin hosts classical guitarists Fareed Haque and Goran Ivanovic; a trio performance with pianist Samantha Cho, violinist Florin Parvulescu, and cellist Brinton Smith; and a remembrance of Oscar Ghiglia. WFMT also brings you concerts by an eclectic group of European orchestras, kicking off with the Vienna Philharmonic led by Riccardo Muti; the electrifying soloist Yuja Wang in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Berlin Philharmonic; and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic featuring the exceptional young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. And on wfmt.com, don’t miss our roundup of spooky Halloween musical events around town.
I hope you enjoy our fall programming and, on behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, thank you for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Amusement Parks
AS THE NEW SEASON of Chicago
Stories continues, we turn our focus to childhood delight and nostalgia in Amusement Parks, a documentary that explores the history of roller coasters, arcade games, and cotton candy from the late nineteenth century in Chicago and onwards. Travel back in time on Friday, October 4 at 8:00 pm to visit Riverview, Kiddieland, Santa’s Village, and many more pleasure gardens from the past. This month, we spoke to producer and writer Rachel Pikelny about
the joy of amusement parks, some of her favorite stories about them, and Chicago’s place in their evolution.
THE GUIDE: The story of Chicago’s amusement parks as told in the documentary goes as far back as the 19th century. What makes this an interesting story to tell today?
RACHEL PIKELNY: A century ago, when amusement parks first started sprouting up in Chicago, a new, urban
working class finally had the time and money to spend on leisure activities, and amusement parks filled that desire in spades. In a way, amusement parks opened up the world to people, drawing them out of their homes and workplaces and into new, magical spaces rich with stimulation and connection.
How exciting it must have been for a young person in the nineteenth century to soar above the rooftops on the Ferris Wheel, or plummet down a water
The Strat-O-Strat ride pictured in 1965
chute, or simply to be in the same physical space as people from other social classes. I hope viewers can take a leap back in time and imagine themselves in the shoes of their ancestors.
THE GUIDE: The documentary starts with a look back at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. How did the fair lay the foundation for future amusement parks in Chicago?
PIKELNY: The fair included a milelong Midway Plaisance, an amusement zone with rides, games, and other attractions. Ultimately, it was the most lucrative part of the whole fair. It proved the viability of amusement parks as successful business ventures, inspiring several entrepreneurs to open other parks in Chicago and beyond.
THE GUIDE: When people think of Chicago amusement parks, Riverview is often the first to come to mind. Why was Riverview important to so many Chicagoans?
PIKELNY: Over its 64-year history, a staggering 200 million people visited Riverview Park. The park also drew people from all ages and backgrounds, a rare thing in this often-segregated city. And it was huge, at one time spanning 140 acres. Nowadays, people have to drive outside of Chicago to experience a mega-park like Six Flags Great America, but Riverview was right in the heart of the North Side.
THE GUIDE: What were some of the memories of Riverview that people shared that stood out for you?
PIKELNY: Oh, I heard such great stories! Lots of people remembered how, inside the fun house called Aladdin’s Castle, an employee would fire an air hose and send women’s skirts flying up. Apparently, teen boys and grown men would stand nearby to catch a glimpse.
I heard tons of stories about the roller coasters at Riverview. Everyone had a favorite: The Flying Turns, The
Bobs, The Silver Streak, and other rides like the Pair-O-Chutes. A lot of people I talked to were too scared to ride that one.
Amusement
parks are sensory playgrounds where the name of the game is fun.
One person told me that as a kid, he would stand under the roller coasters and collect spare change that fell out of people’s pockets on the rides. This was the 1960s, so if you had 45 cents, you were set for the day. That same person told me that he met his eventual wife at the Riverview Roller Rink.
THE GUIDE: What other parks were important to the history of Chicago?
PIKELNY: It was tough to choose which ones to feature in the show. Starting with the Midway Plaisance at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, we then cover Paul Boyton’s Water Chutes, Ravinia Park, Riverview Park, White City Amusement Park, Kiddieland in Melrose Park, Santa’s Village in Dundee, and Fun Town on the South Side of the city. We also give nods to other parks along the way.
THE GUIDE: What is it about amusement parks that makes people so happy?
PIKELNY: Amusement parks are sensory playgrounds where the name of the game is fun. They’re magical places where the rules and restraints of daily life just don’t apply, where people can let loose and enjoy themselves. For many people, an amusement park might be the place where they had their first kiss, the first time they were scared, the
first time they were allowed to go somewhere on their own.
THE GUIDE: As a producer, what did you enjoy most about making this film?
PIKELNY: This was such a fun show! My kids are big fans of Six Flags in Gurnee. During production on this show, we spent an evening filming there and it was so much fun to include my kids as “extras.” I think they had way too much cotton candy that night, but we all had a blast.
THE GUIDE: What will people find on the companion website?
PIKELNY: The website has great photos from Riverview Park, a look back at the history of the park, and additional articles on the Midway Plaisance and Paul Boyton’s Shoot the Chutes ride. There’s also an opportunity for people to share their own memories from their favorite Chicago amusement parks.
THE GUIDE: What might viewers learn about Chicago amusement parks and their history that they might not have previously known?
PIKELNY: Many people are familiar with Ferris wheels and might have even ridden the one on Navy Pier. But incredibly, that wheel is only three-quarters the size of the original Ferris wheel that debuted at Chicago’s World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. That wheel was gigantic; its 66-ton axle was the largest piece of steel ever forged at the time, and the wheel held more than 2,000 passengers at a time!
I think that people would also be shocked to learn that Ravinia, which we now know as a worldclass music venue, got its start as an amusement park.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Two mighty orchestras present a rousing, jazz-meets-classical event marking the 125th anniversary of Duke Ellington’s birth. Giancarlo Guerrero leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, alternating between the original orchestral version performed by the CSO and imaginative new jazz arrangements presented by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Both ensembles join forces for a selection from Wynton Marsalis’s Swing Symphony, described by The Telegraph as “a journey through jazz history and the sounds of America itself.” The program also features Adams’s The Chairman Dances, Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra No. 1, and works by Ellington announced from the stage.

Folkstage
For the past 30 years and more, Jim Malcolm has been the ultimate Scots troubadour. Traveling the world with his guitar, harmonicas, and engaging wit, he sings the traditional songs of Scotland and his own masterfully crafted songs in a style which is modern and accessible, yet utterly authentic. He has been described as “one of the finest singers in Scotland in any style.” Susie Malcolm, his wife, is an award-winning singer with a special knowledge of the musical traditions of North East Scotland and a penchant for ballads. The couple has recorded three acclaimed albums as a duo, one of which was hailed by Celtic Music Radio as “a masterclass in Scottish traditional song.” For their highly anticipated Folkstage concert live from St. Tim’s Coffeehouse in Skokie, the duo offers harmonies and humor, tales from the road, the riverside, and from the home front.
