This month, WFMT focuses on American music, performers, and composers across our signature series –Live from WFMT, Listening to Singers, Sounds Classical, Best of Studs Terkel, and Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin.
From the President & CEO The Guide
Dear Member,
It’s always exciting when we have a new film from Ken Burns to share, and this month WTTW is proud to bring you Leonardo da Vinci, a sweeping new two-part documentary that tells the story of this fifteenth century Italian polymath, who left behind artistic works of staggering beauty and detailed sketches and ideas that today are marveled at for their ingenuity and foresight. On page 4, meet the film’s co-producers Sarah Burns and David McMahon, who will take you behind the scenes of the production.
Also in November, we close out the latest season of our flagship local history series Chicago Stories with two compelling tales. Al Capone’s Bloody Business recalls the world’s first celebrity gangster – a South Sider who capitalized on Prohibition to make a fortune, murdering anyone who got in his way.
And the season finale, House Music: A Cultural Revolution, celebrates the trailblazing creators and Chicago origins of house music as we explore its lasting influence on musicians today. I hope you will explore the companion websites for each of the Chicago Stories documentaries.
This month, WFMT focuses on American music, performers, and composers across several signature series, including Live from WFMT, which welcomes world-renowned pianist Jonathan Biss for a live performance and conversation; Listening to Singers, with an exclusive interview with the legendary American mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade; Sounds Classical , which shines a spotlight on Disney music, the Harlem Renaissance, and Americana elements in classical music; and Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin, which spends a week highlighting the work of Copland, Ives, Barber, Ellington, Gershwin, and Mark O’Connor.
From all of us at WTTW and WFMT, in this month of Thanksgiving, please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Chicago Stories: Al Capone’s Bloody Business
He was Chicago’s first celebrity gangster, a mob kingpin whose name is still synonymous with the city around the world. Southsider Al Capone took advantage of Prohibition to turn Chicago into a “bootlegger’s paradise,” making a fortune in the process and murdering anyone who got in his way. But the law eventually collared him for a surprisingly mundane crime: tax evasion. Audio-narrated descriptions are available.

Leonardo da Vinci
A Q&A with producers Sarah Burns and David McMahon
by Daniel Hautzinger
The term “Renaissance man” may as well have been coined to describe Leonardo da Vinci. Best known today as a painter and artist who created some of the most famous images in Western culture – the Mona Lisa, the Vitruvian Man – Leonardo da Vinci was also an insatiably curious thinker who studied human anatomy and optics; dreamt up machines
for flying and war; and delved into physics, biology, geology, and more. All of this is on display in the thousands of pages of notebooks that he filled with drawings and writings in backwards mirror script.
The latest documentary from Ken Burns and his production team tells the story of Leonardo da Vinci’s multitudinous pursuits and puts viewers “in between his ears,” as the filmmaker David McMahon says. We
spoke to McMahon and fellow filmmaker Sarah Burns about the film, their approach to covering one of the most famous artists of all time, and what they took away from their time immersed in his work.
LEONARDO DA VINCI premieres on WTTW and the PBS app in two parts on Monday, November 18 and Tuesday, November 19 at 7:00 pm.
Leonardo da Vinci, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan, Italy
The Last Supper
The Guide: What’s your elevator pitch for how you describe da Vinci?
DAVID McMAHON: You’re asking us, the Ken Burns people, to give you something short?
SARAH BURNS: It’s hard to describe him. There’s something unique about the way he approached all of these different disciplines. It’s his curiosity that feels like the defining feature, if you had to pick one. That’s what leads him to his interest in all of these different subjects. He wanted to know everything about everything. He was just obsessively, incessantly curious.
The Guide: Why did you decide to use split screens and include so much footage of nature?
BURNS: We thought from the very beginning that this was going to be a way that we might demonstrate Leonardo’s lateral thinking. This was someone who was making these connections across all the different disciplines that he was interested in, so it was a visual representation of the way that he was observing things and drawing things and thinking about things: for example, seeing spirals in nature and thinking about how they could be useful in a machine. It’s all towards the ultimate goal of how to get inside Leonardo’s head.
The Guide: Why did you want to include people like the filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and theater director Mary Zimmerman in addition to biographers and scholars?
McMAHON: There are many ways into Leonardo, and these are people who found a distinct way in. So, a heart surgeon from the UK, an engineer from Caltech, a filmmaker – all people who had suggested an interest in Leonardo and some inspiration they derived from his work. I think what you get from this range of voices is this incredible enthusiasm for Leonardo’s life and what he left behind.
The Guide: Someone in the show says that Leonardo is so varied that
“each of us could find something different in him.” What do you find in him?
McMAHON: I think his genius was in his ability to stay with something until he discovered the thing that he suspected was out there about it.
What allowed him to do that was a colossal imagination that permitted him to think up things and ways of approaching stuff that no one had. He’s in a time when thinkers had been relying on wisdom that was 17, 18, 19 centuries old. They hadn’t challenged it. They hadn’t tried to put their own spin on it. He is doing all of that challenging, and it’s profound.
BURNS: The powers of observation that he gets from his curiosity. I feel like we could all try to emulate Leonardo a little bit in our everyday lives, just in the noticing of things: stepping outside and studying the beating wings of a dragonfly, or how a bird flies. There’s something in his curiosity that feels like a kind of awe about the natural world that I think is good.
The Guide: What do you find to be his most remarkable achievement, or one that speaks to you the most?
Mc MAHON: I could probably answer this differently any time, because
“ I feel like we could all try to emulate Leonardo a little bit in our everyday lives.”
Filmmaker Sarah Burns
there are a lot of works that I woke up to when somebody explained why they were profound to them. It felt revelatory when Monsignor Timothy Verdon explained what was happening in The Virgin of the Rocks. It helped me wake up to the idea that Leonardo was able to find other layers in stories from the Bible that many other painters had done. He was able to find the humanity in a character like Mary. He was able to find drama in a scene that had otherwise seemed sleepy. And that was because of what he would bring to the painting, which is, he wanted to understand how the human body responds to something dramatic. Why do we make the facial expressions we do? Why does our pulse quicken, and how does it show up in our bodies, and how do you paint that? He’s looking for experiences that the characters in these well-told stories are having and trying to see them anew and apply all his understanding of science and nature to that.
BURNS: The Mona Lisa was a little bit intimidating, because it’s probably the most famous painting on earth. I think that it’s easy to feel like, “I’m not sure I get what the big deal is.” But to hear Francesca Borgo explain in the film what makes this such a special painting was an amazing experience for me, to get to think anew about this most famous painting in the world. This is a culmination of Leonardo’s work: the scientific inquiry to try to understand the human body and nature and how it’s all connected, and then how to put that in a painting. It takes on a lot more meaning.

D-Composed
Sounds Classical
Founded in 2017, D-Composed is a Chicago-based Black chamber music collective, focused on Black artists and storytelling with a mission to reach diverse audiences and remove barriers to the arts. Artistic director Kori Coleman told WFMT “We want to dismantle the notion that classical music is reserved for a certain group of people.” Coleman said that when she was learning the violin as a child, “my mom would tell me and my sisters that there weren’t a lot of Black violinists. The fact that that still rings true, the fact that we’re still saying, ‘the first Black person’ to do something in classical music years later reinforces why there is a need for programming like this.” Lately, the collective has gained a reputation as a “creative incubator” having collaborated not only with other classical musicians, but also with poets, artists, and dancers. Hosts LaRob K. Rafael and Kristina Lynn welcome members of D-Composed for a live performance and conversation.

Enigmatic singer-songwriter Connie Converse’s music career never took off during her lifetime. Active in the early to mid-1950s, she left the Greenwich Village music scene in 1961 to start anew in Ann Arbor as a champion for social justice. One day in 1974, she announced she would a fresh start elsewhere asking loved ones not to look for her. She was never heard from again. A few of her early recordings were released in 2009, attracting a new fan base. To mark her 100th birthday, Chicago vocalist Emmy Bean and arrangercomposer and multi-instrumentalist Ronnie Kuller have created Her Only Light, a vocal and chamber ensemble exploration of Converse’s songs with their brilliant lyrics and contemporary feel. Bean and Kuller’s goal is to honor both the music and Converse’s personal wish “to let me go, please.”

Listening to Singers
Founded in 1973 by Peter Phillips, the Tallis Scholars have established themselves as the leading exponents of Renaissance sacred music throughout the world. Peter Phillips has worked with the ensemble to create, through good tuning and blend, the purity and clarity of sound which he feels best serves the Renaissance repertoire, allowing every detail of the musical lines to be heard. It is the resulting beauty of sound for which The Tallis Scholars have become so widely renowned. Host Oliver Camacho speaks to members of the ensemble in advance of their performance at St. James Cathedral in December. Saturday, November 30 4:00 pm
