From the President & CEO The Guide
Dear Member,
This month, WTTW will launch a year of coverage of violence interruption and prevention in our award-winning multiplatform Firsthand initiative focusing on the lived experiences of people facing critical issues in Chicago. Beginning on February 17 and throughout 2025, Firsthand: Peacekeepers will shine a spotlight on individuals who are taking it upon themselves to make their communities safe and peaceful places. Each will share what they have learned about the social and societal fractures that cause violence as they continue to draw on their faith, cultural traditions, and research. Watch their stories on our website at wttw.com/firsthand, where you will also find expert talks, investigative journalism, and a discussion guide. Remember you can also stream all video content on your smart TV on the PBS app.
WTTW will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with Great Migrations: A People on the Move from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.; a new American Masters focusing on jazz virtuoso and television pioneer Hazel Scott; an Independent Lens film, The Bike Vessel , about a local father and son who challenge themselves to cycle between Chicago and St. Louis; an American Experience history of the NAACP and its architects; and more. See page 7 for the complete schedule.
And WFMT will also mark this important month with a performance by Sheku Kanneh-Mason, making his Chicago Symphony debut as soloist in Elgar’s Cello Concerto; the world premiere, from the Cleveland Orchestra, of a new trumpet concerto by Wynton Marsalis; two Sounds Classical programs focusing on the Harlem Renaissance and music inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and from the New York Philharmonic, an evening of music of the African diaspora including works by Carlos Simon and Nathalie Joachim, conducted by Thomas Wilkins.
One final note: we’re excited to welcome new Morning Show host John Clare to the WFMT announcing team. We know our curious listeners will enjoy his deep knowledge of classical music and warm and immersive presentation style. Listen in for John weekdays from 6:00 to 10:00 am.
We are grateful for your ongoing membership support, and thank you for watching and listening to WTTW and WFMT.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Q+A
with co-executive producer Dan Protess
FIRSTHAND, WTTW’s award-winning multiplatform initiative, began in 2019 to highlight the firsthand perspectives of people facing critical issues in Chicago, focusing on a different topic each year. Over the course of the project, we have covered gun violence, coronavirus, poverty, segregation, life after prison, homelessness, and the migrant experience.
Beginning on Monday, February 17 and throughout 2025 at wttw.com/firsthand and on the PBS app, Firsthand will shine a spotlight on Peacekeepers – extraordinary individuals who are working to create peace in their Chicago neighborhoods. We spoke with documentary co-executive producer Dan Protess about why this is a timely topic and what we can learn from these everyday heroes who are taking it upon themselves to try to heal their communities.
THE GUIDE: Why were peacekeepers selected as the focus area for this year’s Firsthand initiative?
DAN PROTESS: This is our seventh year of the project, and up until now, the titles of the series have always focused on social problems, like gun violence or segregation. Over the years we have also highlighted solutions to these problems through profiles of people doing heroic work. This year, the title centers on the heroes themselves. Right now, there is so much energy in our city around supporting community violence intervention programs, so it made sense to profile everyday heroes who are working to make their communities more peaceful places.
THE GUIDE : Can you explain what is meant by peacekeepers?
PROTESS : We are profiling people who are actively intervening in violent conflicts, and also creating the conditions for peace in more subtle ways. So, for instance, one story is about Diane Latiker, who is caring for neighborhood teens in Roseland and West Pullman. She’s not jumping out in front of conflicts, but she’s helping to create a beloved community. We are also profiling a judge in the North Lawndale Restorative Justice Community Court, where they are attempting to address crimes such as gun possession in ways that are designed to heal the victims, the community, and the offenders themselves.
Street outreach workers have received so much attention over the last few years, including in our inaugural topic, Firsthand: Gun Violence. This year, we are trying to show the more preventative and restorative aspects of this work. Yes, they are often putting themselves in the middle of dangerous situations, but they are also a constant presence in their communities – showing up long before there is a conflict, and sticking around long after the police have left – working out peace agreements, leading peace circles, and simply being a positive presence.
THE GUIDE : How were the documentary subjects chosen?
PROTESS : Our team has been working on Firsthand for seven years now, so we have developed a process. First, we do a deep dive into the research on the subject, to better understand the issues that we might want to spotlight in the documentaries. Then, we connect with experts who are working in the area to ask for introductions to people who we might want to profile in the series. We talk with about 50 possible documentary participants before we settle on five. When all is said and done, at a certain point we need to set aside all of the research and talking about issues, and focus on the individual human being and his or her story.
THE GUIDE: Is there one story this year that you find especially compelling?
PROTESS : It is hard to pick favorites, but Damien’s story is remarkable, in ways that are tragic but at the same time leave you feeling hopeful. There is a constant sense of motion, as he rushes from one crisis to the next in Garfield Park. And then, in the midst of filming the story, one of Damien’s own outreach workers loses his son to community violence. It is quite clearly weighing on Damien personally, and at the same time, he needs to continue to do his job, which is to make sure that there’s no retaliation.
And Judge Spratt’s story is so fascinating. It offers a glimpse of a completely different kind of criminal justice system, in which it feels like the community is coming together to solve a problem. On the surface, her story could not be more different from Damien’s, but the throughline here is that these are community-based interventions, and they are focused on solving problems holistically, not just on punishing one person.
THE GUIDE: Why do you think it’s important to tell these stories now?
PROTESS: There has been energy over the last few years around creating alternatives to traditional methods of policing and adjudication. And these documentaries show that we do in fact have viable alternatives. Research and data shows that community violence intervention programs can sometimes make communities

safer, and there is encouraging data on the efficacy of restorative justice courts. But these programs depend on political will and philanthropic support, both of which tend to come and go.
THE GUIDE : What do you hope viewers will take away from this series?
PROTESS : I’m hoping they will see these peacekeepers as professionals whose work is guided by research and who have received extensive training, and who, like a mail carrier or a city worker, are fixtures in their neighborhoods. With many other
professions, we tend to assume all of this, perhaps because they are wearing uniforms, or because they have professional degrees, or they are working for government agencies. The term “peacekeeper” here is obviously imprecise and hasn’t been adopted as a formal job title, but it may be a helpful framework as we think about what kinds of people are essential to making our city work.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

In the Spotlight
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
In one of the “Top Ten Performances of 2024” (Chicago Classical Review), Sheku Kanneh-Mason made his long-awaited debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra delivering “a notably youthful and ardent performance” of Edward Elgar’s rhapsodic Cello Concerto. The British cellist signed a major recording deal with Decca Classics shortly after becoming the first Black artist to win BBC’s 2016 Young Musician of the Year Award. At the age of 19, Sheku Kanneh-Mason rose to international attention performing at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, watched by two billion people worldwide. Now one of classical music’s most prominent ambassadors, his mission is “to make music accessible to all, whether that’s performing for children in a school hall, at an underground club, or in the world’s leading concert venues.”

Meet John Clare, WFMT’s new Morning Host
A winner of the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award, John Nasukaluk ‘Nasuk’ Clare comes to WFMT most recently from Classical Music Indy in Indianapolis and SiriusXM, where he has hosted classical music programs for a national audience since 2018. Born in Alaska of Inuit heritage, John has been performing music since childhood. He will apply his deep knowledge of classical music to build on WFMT’s history and reputation for radio excellence in the service of creating programming that is accessible and inspires curiosity and exploration. “I love classical music and sharing it with people, and I consider it my life’s work to find new and interesting ways to introduce music, composers, and performers to an audience of curious listeners,” he says. “WFMT is the gold standard in classical music radio, and I’m overjoyed to join in that tradition in this next phase of my career.”

In her four-movement cello concerto Had To Be, composer Nathalie Joachim explores how fashion and style reinforce one’s desire for personal freedom by rejecting societally imposed limitations. The new work is performed by its dedicatee Seth Parker Woods as part of the orchestra’s program Afromodernism: Music of the African Diaspora which includes Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances (2023), David Baker’s Kosbro (1973; rev. 1975). The evening’s centerpiece work is William Grant Still’s Autochthonous Symphony (1947), which portrays, in his words, “the fusion of musical cultures in North America.” Thomas Wilkins conducts.
