FISCAL 2019 kicked off with the national premiere of three more episodes in the 10 that Changed America series and website. Host Geoffrey Baer set off on a summer road trip across America, meeting with historians, curators, and guides who shared the fascinating backstories behind the iconic streets that connect our nation, the monuments that commemorate our history, and the engineering marvels that transformed our environment and shaped the way we live.

WFMT bid farewell to retiring Morning Program host Carl Grapentine with an elegant sendoff at the Ravinia Festival. The station presented more live performances from the Grant Park Music Festival that included Facebook Live videos from Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion – this month, that included the annual Independence Day celebration. WFMT also shared concerts from Ravinia and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and performances from Lyric Opera of Chicago and Carnegie Hall; welcomed Mariachi Herencia de Mexico to Levin Studio; and went behind the scenes to meet the organists who liven up Cubs and Sox games.

Other July highlights on WTTW included A Capitol Fourth, the live Independence Day celebration from the U.S. Capitol, and several new series including No Passport Required with chef Marcus Samuelsson; Maigret, starring Rowan Atkinson; Hillary, about the famed Mt. Everest explorer; and The Secret Life of Dogs. On wttw.com, the new digital series Chefs Off the Clock revealed the surprising ways that some of Chicago’s celebrity chefs unwind after they clock out of the kitchen. Also, staffers at Chicago Tonight shared some book recommendations and the site offered a fun quiz, "What Classic Novel Character Are You?", along with several stories on the Dan Ryan Expressway protest march and gun incidents

AUGUST 2018

In three new series, WTTW took audiences to the Australian Outback, across Mexico, and to three Ancient Invisible Cities: Cairo, Athens, and Istanbul. WTTW also presented several new music specials, recalled the life and work of artist Eva Hesse, and revealed a new winner of The Great British Baking Show. wttw.com interviewed the filmmaker behind Frontline: Our Man in Tehran; focused on the opioid epidemic, homelessness, and immigrant deportation; polled audiences on their favorite books of all time; met the stellar young musicians who took part in Great Performances: Chicago Voices; highlighted the Chicago Jazz Festival via an exclusive story; and presented a community screening and discussion of Exit Zero at the Chicago Cultural Center.

WFMT CELEBRATED the centenary of an American musical icon – the prolific composer, conductor, pianist, and teacher Leonard Bernstein, who would have turned 100 on August 25 – by playing selections from Bernstein’s many recordings throughout the month, including his own rendering of Candide, and hosting a “pop-up” performance in Boystown. WFMT’s Grant Park season continued with music from Shakespeare; a concert featuring dynamic young pianist George Li, and a rousing season finale performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana with vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra. WFMT also presented new music from the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, the electrifying pianist Yuja Wang in concert from Carnegie Hall, and a Monteverde rarity from the Royal Opera House: Ulysses’ Return to His Homeland. ON WEDNESDAY, May 8, WTTW and WFMT held the organization’s annual gala; the year’s theme was Over the Moon: A Celebration of WTTW and WFMT. The evening was hosted by Geoffrey Baer (in a space suit!) in anticipation of the upcoming sixhour American Experience miniseries celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Chasing the Moon. The evening’s dedicated and hard-working event chairs Renée and Lester Crown devised a magical and unforgettable experience that celebrated this seminal event in American history for the 400-plus generous supporters who attended, along with some very special guests who were interviewed by Phil Ponce and Brandis Friedman – Apollo astronaut James Lovell (who attended with his wife Marilyn), and trailblazing NASA engineer Poppy Northcutt.

Lopez, Katherine Bourne, Meghan Murphy, and dancers Elliot Hammans (Hubbard Street Dance) and Anna Gerberich (Joffrey Ballet), accompanied by a seven-piece band. The program was choreographed by Rachel Rockwell with direction by Roberta Duchak. After the performance, guests dined in a large transparent tent with white accents. Jewell Events Catering provided the cuisine, with libations from Terlato Wines. The dinner commenced with remarks by Geoffrey Baer, WTTW Board of Trustees Chairman James W. Mabie, and President and CEO Sandra Cordova Micek. The guests departed with some special gifts, including treats from Swirlz Cupcakes. Thanks in part to the event’s lead sponsor BMO Harris Bank, trustee Peter McNitt, and Ray Whitacre, the celebration raised more than $1 million in support of the organization’s mission.

As they arrived, guests posed for photos in front of a stunning rendering of the moon, and then moved on to cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in WTTW’s strikingly decorated Grainger Studio. There, they enjoyed a program of popular music from the year of the moon landing, 1969, performed by Abby Mueller, Quentin Darrington, Yando
