The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

This month, we are excited to bring you a new three-part series, Preshistoric Road Trip, written and hosted by Emily Graslie (meet Emily on page 4!), who will take you on an epic adventure through America’s dinosaur country in search of mysterious creatures and bizarre ecosystems that have shaped Earth as we know it. Explore the companion website, wttw.com/prehistoricroadtrip, for an interactive road trip map, a behind-the-scenes travel journal, and video extras. WTTW brings you more trailblazing women in June, with new American Masters profiles of film icon Mae West and award-winning author Toni Morrison; Holland Taylor’s portrayal of legendary Texas governor Ann Richards; historian Lucy Worsley tracing Royal History’s Myths and Secrets; and a Great Performances portrait of feminist Gloria Steinem, among others. On wttw.com, watch an archival interview with Morrison and meet some recent Illinois female political figures, from labor activist Agnes Nestor to environmental activist Hazel Johnson. At WFMT, mindful that Chicago’s summertime classical music festivals and other live performances are on pause for this season, we hope to fulfill that need with a new weekly series, Best of the Grant Park Music Festival; our Maestro’s Choice series from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; and favorite past productions from Lyric Opera of Chicago. And in lieu of summertime travel, wfmt.com offers a playlist celebrating farflung locales, maritime voyages, and long layovers; and our music-oriented summer book list to brighten your time at home. From all of us here at WTTW and WFMT, we are grateful for your continued support. Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators

Independent Lens: Recorder – The Marion Stokes Project

In this third season of Shakespeare & Hathaway, Lu has passed her private investigator exams and Frank’s tidied himself up a bit, but murder, kidnap, blackmail, and infidelity still abound in the pretty tourist town of Stratford-upon-Avon.

Activist Marion Stokes secretly recorded American television 24 hours a day from 1975 to 2012, creating an invaluable comprehensive archive of the media. Her 70,000 VHS tapes reveal how television shaped – and continues to shape – our world.

STARTING JUNE 17, Prehistoric Road Trip will take you on an epic adventure through dinosaur country to search for mysterious creatures and bizarre ecosystems that have shaped Earth as we know it. With the intrepid Emily Graslie as host and guide, the three-part WTTW production travels thousands of miles to visit some of the most active and dynamic fossil sites in the world.

Q

: You originally pursued a degree in fine art painting. How did you move from that focus to becoming interested in, as you have said, “really old, really dead stuff?”

Emily G ra s lie, sauropo d quarry near Bozeman, MT, Prehistoric Road Trip.

4

JUNE 2020

A : I’ VE A LWAYS H A D an interest in the natural world, and first wanted to explore that passion through my artwork. Natural history museum collections provide an amazing resource for artists to get up close and personal with nature in a way that isn’t feasible in other scenarios (imagine trying to get close enough to a live grizzly bear to study its teeth for a drawing…!). Through the process of studying nature through art I began to learn an incredible amount of information about biodiversity, evolution, and the history of life on earth. Sharing these stories through videos, and now through Prehistoric Road Trip, has been my way of celebrating our planet with others.

Q

: This series takes us to a part of America that many have never seen or experienced in this way. Was it important to you to do that, especially with regard to your home state of South Dakota?

A: I GREW UP IN South Dakota wishing I lived somewhere else: it’s a state home to fewer than a million people, with no major sports teams, and lacking in many of the cultural attractions and museums that major cities have in spades. But it wasn’t until I moved away and lived in Chicago for a few years - a city that has all of those things I was in want of growing up - that I began to realize just how much South Dakota has to offer in terms of its incredible geology, natural history, and unique cultures and history. There’s a richness to South Dakota that gets lost in presumptions people have about the state and the region as a whole. Plus, states like Utah and Colorado are really well-known in the U.S. for their dinosaurs and fossil repositories, and I wanted to make sure other states in the Northern Great Plains could have their moment to shine, too.

Q

: How were the filming locations chosen?

A: KNOWING THIS SERIES is going to be viewed across the country, we wanted a healthy mix of sites that the audience could visit themselves (like the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, or the Wyoming Dinosaur Center), as well as remote areas where many paleontologists conduct their fieldwork. Paleontological surveys happen across a patchwork of land areas all managed by different entities, so we worked with private landowners; state, federal, regional, and tribal agencies; and universities, colleges, and museums across this five-state area to represent just how many organizations are involved in this sort of work. Plus, we wanted to showcase the geologic diversity of the area, so we wanted to pick sites that were representative of different eras of time spanning two billion years of Earth’s history. It was challenging to narrow down the options, to say the least.

Q

: You seem to have a special affinity for dinosaurs. Do you have a favorite, and why?

A: MY AFFINITY FOR prehistoric life is not limited to only dinosaurs! I like to celebrate all of the unique plants and animals that have called our planet home, especially the ancient fish,

insects, and other arthropods that don’t get as much love or attention. I couldn’t pick a favorite dinosaur if I tried. How can you compare a pachycephalosaurus to an ankylosaur to a T. rex? They are all perfect.

Q

: What did this look back into our past reveal to you about our present, and our future?

A: OUR PLANET IS astonishingly old and resilient. It has been through traumas and upheavals that have rendered the vast majority of all life on it extinct, time and again, and yet life - and the planet itself - still manage to persevere. For that we should all be grateful; and one of the best ways for us to express that collective gratitude is through the way we care for our planet and for one another, both now and well into the future. It’s important to take the time to learn our planet’s history, to celebrate our collective past, and to use that knowledge to make responsible choices to ensure the next generations of people who inherit the Earth are wellequipped to enjoy it for centuries to come.

Q

: What do you most hope people take away from this adventure?

A: IT’S MY HOPE that this series will inspire a sense of duty in our viewers and help them better understand and appreciate our planet, no matter where they are. There are so many aspects of natural history that we still know so little about, and countless numbers - millions! - of new species yet undescribed to science and more added every single day. We are just at the beginning of discovery!

Q

: What advice would you offer to girls who may want to pursue a career in science or natural history?

A: GET OUT THERE and explore! EMILY GRASLIE is host, writer, and executive producer of Prehistoric Road Trip; Chief Curiosity Correspondent at Chicago’s Field Museum; and host of the popular YouTube series “The Brain Scoop.”

PREHISTORIC ROAD TRIP will air on three consecutive Wednesdays, beginning June 17, at 9:00 pm and can be streamed online at wttw.com/prehistoricroadtrip.

Programmer’s Picks Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin

San Francisco Symphony in Concert

Lynn Harrell: Songs My Father Taught Me

“The viola sings with a dark richness that composers loved,” says host Bill McGlaughlin, citing figures from Mozart to Hindemith. Also, Bill samples the symphonies of Bruckner, Mahler, and Elgar.

Outgoing music director Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco musicians in Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, Song of the Night, and in an all-Stravinsky program culminating with The Rite of Spring.

Mack Harrell (1909-1960) was a distinguished 20thcentury baritone. His son, the late cellist Lynn Harrell, shares memories of Mack in Songs My Father Taught Me in this WFMT Father’s Day special.

Riccardo Muti

From the CSO’s Archives: Maestro’s Choice WFMT’s partnership with Chicago Symphony Orchestra continues through June with more of CSO music director Riccardo Muti’s selections from the orchestra’s vast archives. This month, enjoy a mostly American program with actor John Malkovich narrating Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait – plus George Walker, Dvorak’s New World, and Modest Mussorgsky. An all-Fritz Reiner program features more Copland and music by Zoltan Kodaly, Paul Hindemith, and Sergei Prokofiev. Jean Martinon is joined by Agnes Giebel, Gerard Souzay, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus for Gabriel Faure’s Requiem; also hear works by Debussy and Ravel. Another program features Sir Georg Solti leading selections by Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner, and our final June broadcast features Maestro Muti conducting opera favorites by Rossini, Verdi, Puccini, and Mascagni, including act 1 of Otello from 2011.

Larry Johnson

Remembering Larry Johnson of Arias and Songs Early last March, WFMT was saddened to share that our longtime colleague Larry Johnson had passed away at age 72. Larry had a business career, but his heart belonged to music - in 2018, he donated his prized record collection, most of which was composed of beloved operas and art songs, to DePaul University. A part-time on-air host at WFMT during the 1990s, in recent years Larry returned with a weekly series, Arias and Songs with Larry Johnson, that showcased great singers of the past and present. WFMT has been bringing you selected highlights from Larry’s more than 350 programs, and this month’s encore shows include a tribute to coffee, tea, beer, and wine; a collection of songs about things that crawl, swim, and fly; a celebration of Father’s Day; and one of Larry’s tributes to Pride Week.

In the Spotlight Ana María Martínez

From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte Sometimes described as an operatic “romcom,” this final collaboration between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte finds a cynical old man betting with two young ones that their fiancées, the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are incapable of being faithful to them, because “women are like that.” (That’s a free translation of the Italian title.) Originally set in the Italian city of Naples, Lyric’s production from the 2017-18 season transferred the setting to an unspecified resort town on the Riviera during World War I. Soprano Ana María Martínez heads the cast.

Stefano La Colla

From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Turandot Soprano Amber Wagner takes the title role in Puccini’s colorful melodrama Turandot from the 2017-18 season. She plays a proud and cold-hearted princess of ancient China who avenges the rape and murder of an ancestress by slaughtering princes who come seeking her hand in marriage, who are condemned to death unless they can solve three riddles. Calaf (tenor Stefano La Colla) succeeds, but agrees to be executed if Turandot can discover his name (he arrived under a pseudonym). The princess orders that No One Shall Sleep “(Nessun dorma)” until his name is discovered. Calaf predicts he will win her over and does, which makes for a happy ending to a dark and bloodthirsty drama, illumined by Puccini’s soaring melodic genius.

From Lyric Opera of Chicago: Rigoletto Among the Ryan Opera Center’s numerous alumni who’ve made their names known on international stages are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Quinn Kelsey. In 2017, they joined forces to perform Verdi’s Rigoletto, Kelsey as the crippled jester Rigoletto and Polenzani as the amoral but charming Duke of Mantua. Soprano Rosa Feola made her Lyric debut as Gilda, Rigoletto’s daughter, who’s seduced and abandoned by the duke but cannot free herself from her love for him.

Danish String Quartet

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Recently Lincoln Center welcomed the Danish String Quartet, who have been performing together since 2002 with particular emphasis on Scandinavian composers and a special interest in Nordic folk music. Musical America’s 2020 Ensemble of the Year, the DSQ established its own festival in Copenhagen in 2007. For Lincoln Center, they chose two swan-song compositions: Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 135, and Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s Quartet No. 4, a work dating from 1906.

Esa-Pekka Salonen

Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcasts In the spring of 2018, guest conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen led the Symphony No. 9, Gustav Mahler’s last completed work, written in 1908 and 1909. A very long work for large orchestra, it stands out from the rest of the Mahler canon both for its brilliant orchestration and its highly emotional atmosphere. Conductors and other musicians have had a hard time describing it: is it an evocation of a dream, or is it a nearliteral depiction of approaching death? Mahler himself never heard it played complete; the premiere took place in 1912, a year after his death, with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Bruno Walter. The Chicago Symphony first performed it in 1950 under guest conductor George Szell.
