From the President & CEO The Guide
Dear Member,
I’ve been looking forward to sharing that, beginning October 16, Ken Burns will be back with The American Buffalo, a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes, tracing the animal’s evolution, its significance to the Indigenous people and landscape of the Great Plains, its near extinction, and the efforts to bring the magnificent mammals back from the brink. Don’t miss this must-watch documentary, which we’ll present over two nights on WTTW and stream on the PBS app and our website. Turn to page 4 for an interview with Rosalyn LaPier, professor of history at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, who is featured in the film, and explore our companion website at wttw.com/americanbuffalo.
Also in October, the fall season of WTTW’s documentary series Chicago Stories continues. Watch for the story of George Pullman and his workers’ fight for their autonomy, the urban renewal initiatives of Mayor Richard J. Daley and the repercussions that followed, a profile of Hull House founder Jane Addams and the women who helped her realize her vision, and a look at how Chicago became the world’s foremost manufacturer of a product we all know and love: candy. We’ll also bring you second seasons of World on Fire, Annika, Hotel Portofino, and Native America – a portrait of the beauty and power of today’s Indigenous world.
On WFMT, we’ll bring you a wide variety of programming including a month of concerts from the 2023 BBC Proms ending with the “Last Night of the Proms” conducted by Marin Alsop. On WFMT Presents, listen for an interview with American pianist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship winner Jeremy Denk, and on Introductions, don’t miss the first live-toair recital of the new school year with young cellist Amelia Zitoun. We’ll bid farewell to the 2023 Ravinia season with Black Oak Ensemble performing their acclaimed program Silenced Voices and, from St. Tim’s Coffeehouse in Skokie, Ohio Rust Belt singer-songwriter Ben Gage will perform on Folkstage.
On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I hope you are excited as I am about our fall season programming, and thank you for your support.

Commissioner’s Trophy
An Interview with Historian Rosalyn LaPier
By DANIEL HAUTZINGER
THE AMERICAN BUFFALO, a new two-part, four-hour series from Ken Burns, takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes, tracing the animal’s evolution, its significance to the Indigenous people and landscape of the Great Plains, its near extinction, and the efforts to bring it back from the brink.
For thousands of generations, buffalo (species Bison bison) have evolved alongside Indigenous people who relied on them for food and shelter, and, in exchange for killing them, revered the animal.
Rosalyn LaPier is an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Tribe of Montana and Métis, an environmental historian and traditionally trained ethnobotanist, and both an advisor to and expert featured in the film. We spoke to this University of Illinois UrbanaChampaign Professor of History about the documentary, and the story of bison.
THE GUIDE: Can you describe the relationship between bison and Indigenous people?
ROSALYN L aPIER: The animals that we know today as buffalo are the latest iteration of bison who have lived here in North America for thousands of years. The other
bison have gone extinct, but the latest version, Bison bison, have been on this continent for at least 10,000 years. Scientists estimate that Indigenous people have been here between 30,000 and 33,000 years.
So this particular animal species has always existed with Indigenous people, co-evolving with Indigenous people. And over those thousands and thousands of years, Indigenous people have, through observation and through practice, developed a lifelong knowledge of how bison behave, and how they use bison.
THE GUIDE: As you say in the film, there are

two stories of the bison: the relationship to Indigenous people, and a more destructive one. Can you tell us more about this?
L aPIER: I think that one of the takeaways from this fi lm is that it really is an American story. We need to point the fi nger at ourselves. And by "American," I don't mean "Native American."
We are the ones who are complicit in the utter destruction of this animal. Looking back on our own history, we need to see that greed, and think about how to do it differently the next time. But also to learn from that story: how and why it happened. In certain cases, federal policy was in place helping provide the marketplace so that there could be this destruction of this particular animal. The Americans [at one time] saw bison as a natural resource that could be utilized and mined, that people thought [wouldn’t run out], when, of course, there was an end in sight.
The last part of the story is during the turn of the last century, during the Progressive Era, when some of the original founders of the preservation and conservation movement also became interested in how to restore bison.
THE GUIDE: The latter part of that story is often cited as one of the biggest preservation or environmental successes. Do you think it is an inarguable success story?
L aPIER: Yes and no. We should celebrate that we were able to restore bison to the large population numbers that we have today, back from the brink of extinction. It is nowhere near what it was 200 years ago, when there were around 50, 60 million bison out on the Great Plains. And it’s not an overnight story. It’s something that began at the beginning of the 20th century and went all the way to the 21st century, now.
But the fl ipside of that is that bison are not a free-roaming species. We allow deer to be free-roaming animal species that can go anywhere. In the Rocky Mountain West, they’re in every single town and city and
out in the wild. But all bison today are contained somehow. Most of them are behind fences. Some of them are contained by borders. For example, in Yellowstone National Park, if they leave, they either get captured and relocated or they get killed.
what they do. The Blackfeet tribe would like to be able to release more bison. But the herd has always been contained.
THE GUIDE: Why do you think it is important to tell this story?
L aPIER: One of the important things about this story is that there has been more of an effort to include Indigenous voices, from a lot of different tribal perspectives – to talk about the relationship that those tribal groups have had with bison, how those tribal groups have also been impacted by federal policy, and how federal policy has been detrimental to Indigenous lifeways and economies.
Then fast-forward to the 21st century, and part of the message is also, “We’re still here.” Indigenous people are still here. Bison are still here. In the same way that bison are being revitalized, Indigenous people have also spent the last 100 years revitalizing the Indigenous community, whether it is religion, or language, or cultural practices, or learning and sharing our own history. There are folks like me, somebody who has a Ph.D. in environmental history, but also has Indigenous knowledge and is able to blend both of those in my work and scholarship. Today we have this larger community of folks who are taking what’s positive and useful out of Western society and Indigenous knowledge, and blending those to the benefit of Indigenous communities.
This interview was edited for length and clarity.
This is the part of the conversation that’s occurring now: to what extent will we allow free-roaming bison, and where will this happen? We haven’t taken that next step, which is, “Are we going to allow them to be a free-roaming animal species, or will they just be contained forever?“
About a month ago on the Blackfeet reservation, we actually let loose about two dozen bison to be free roaming. They’re all tagged, so we can see where they go and

Ravinia Festival: Silenced Voices
Last month, Black Oak Ensemble collaborated with JCC Chicago and Ravinia to perform on Violins of Hope—a collection of painstakingly restored string instruments that belonged to Jewish musicians before and during the Holocaust. The string trios featured on the program Silenced Voices share in that history, written by six WWII-era Jewish composers of which only one survived the genocide. The trio says that these works “through their darkness, are incredibly human and ultimately uplifting. That such music could be written in these conditions is a testament to the resilience and faith of these artists.”

From the 2023 BBC Proms
Gemma New, principal conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and music director of Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, made a surprise debut with the Grant Park Orchestra in 2017 stepping in for Simone Young on short notice. Her scheduled return to the podium at Grant Park was in 2018. She was ready to lead the orchestra for a third time on July 12 when a rare tornado warning forced the last-minute cancellation of the concert. This winter, New debuts with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but WFMT is pleased to share her Proms debut leading the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from earlier this summer.

Music of the Baroque: Jephtha
Dame Jane Glover celebrated her 20th anniversary as MOB music director last season. Handel’s dramatic oratorio Jephtha had been on her wish list for the MOB chorus and orchestra since her arrival in 2002. It was worth the wait, as audiences rapturously received this late Handel masterpiece. Chicago Classical Review described it as “a grand slam,” noting its roster of “first class” soloists that included Ryan Opera Center alum David Portillo in the title role, the stylish Lauren Snouffer (a recent interview guest on Listening to Singers) as Jephtha’s daughter Iphis, and the rising star countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen as her lover Hamor.

Lisette Oropesa has sung the role of Susanna in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro twice for Chicago-area audiences (Ravinia 2010, 2014). While Mozart is a specialty of hers, Chicagoans have yet to experience the bel canto repertoire for which the Cuban-American soprano is soughtafter by opera companies all over the world. Her 2018 debut in Lucia di Lammermoor at Madrid’s Teatro Real brought her to international attention, drawing comparisons to the legendary interpreters of the bel canto tragedienne. Oropesa joins WFMT to talk about Mozart and bel canto in advance of her Lyric Opera debut in Donizetti’s Daughter of the Regiment Saturday, October 21 4:00 pm

Best of Studs Terkel: André Watts
The pioneering piano virtuoso André Watts was one of the first Black superstars in classical music. In 1963, his career launched at the age of 16 when Leonard Bernstein presented him at a Young People’s Concert as soloist with the New York Philharmonic in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Before the televised concert, Bernstein introduced Watts to the national television audience, stating that he “flipped” when he first heard Watts play. André Watts, who died of prostate cancer in July, was Studs Terkel’s guest in 1986. WFMT remembers him with this archive broadcast.

Live from WFMT: Lawrence Brownlee
Tenor Lawrence Brownlee is hailed as “one of the most in-demand opera singers in the world today” (NPR). Recently, he has branched out of the bel canto repertoire for which he is universally acclaimed, exploring the high-lying title role of Rameau’s Platée for Paris Opera and delivering a grounded performance as Tamino in The Magic Flute last season at the Met. These forays into 18th century style coupled with his collaborations with contemporary composers have only served to deepen his already formidable skills as a performer. WFMT welcomes him back to the Levin Studio in advance of the prima of The Daughter of the Regiment at Lyric Opera.

From the 2023 BBC Proms
The “Last Night of the Proms,” the conclusion of the eight-week summer concert series, traditionally offers audience-pleasing, popular classics in the first half, followed by a second half of British patriotic pieces (Arne’s Rule Britannia!, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, Parry’s Jerusalem). The audience-pleasers for the 2023 “Last Night” include Lise Davidsen singing “Dich, teure Halle” from Wagner’s Tannhäuser and “Vieni! t’affretta” from Verdi’s Macbeth; and Sheku-Kanneh Mason performing Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Deep River and Max Bruch’s Kol nidrei—truly something for everyone with two of the brightest stars of classical music.
