WFMT
THE GUIDE The Member Magazine for WTTW and

From the President & CEO The Guide

Dear Member,

This month, host Geoffrey Baer attempts to solve some of Chicago’s most baffling questions in our new show, Chicago Mysteries. Along with a team of fellow sleuths, Geoffrey will deploy his detective skills to answer burning questions like: Did a UFO fly over O’Hare Airport? How did the alligator later named “Chance the Snapper” suddenly appear in Chicago’s Humboldt Lagoon? Is Hull House haunted? Why don’t Chicagoans put ketchup on their hot dogs? Turn to page 4 for a peek behind the scenes of the making of this new special.

Also in April on WTTW, we welcome a new season of the dark comedy-mystery series Guilt and a four-part series that caused quite a stir in Britain – the powerful drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, based on the true story of postal workers falsely accused of theft by the British government. On Saturday evenings, join us Down Under for My Life is Murder, a new series from New Zealand and Australia starring Lucy Lawless as a retired detectiveturned-breadmaker who is lured back to investigate crimes; and we think you’ll like The Brokenwood Mysteries, about a police inspector who discovers an unusual number of murders in what appeared to be a quaint rural town.

WFMT’s Levin Performance Studio will be a busy place this month as Live from WFMT welcomes back an eclectic group of favorite artists – The Galvin Cello Quartet, piano duo Claire Aebersold and Ralph Neiweem, violinist Rachel Barton Pine and pianist Matt Hagle, and Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues. Also, Introductions will bring you the three finalists from this year’s Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition, including a true trailblazer – 16-year-old Jaden Teague-Núñez – who won first prize playing an instrument that had never before appeared in the contest: the steelpan. And we celebrate Passover with a special appearance by the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band with renowned Cantor Pavel Roytman.

We hope you are enjoying spring in Chicago. Thank you for your support of everything we do.

Sincerely,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

Q& A

IN HIS NEW SPECIAL Chicago Mysteries  – premiering on Tuesday, April 16 at 7:00 pm, wttw.com/chicagomysteries, and the PBS app – Geoff rey Baer embarks on an adventure to solve some of Chicago’s age-old puzzlers involving a UFO sighting, a cemetery secret, a sunken vessel in the Chicago River, and more. Th is month, Geoff rey sits down with Th e Guide to off er up some behind-the-scenes intelligence.

The Guide: How did you come up with the idea for Chicago Mysteries?

Geoffrey Baer: After some

brainstorming, all we had was a title that sounded like it had lots of possibilities. We consulted sources and unearthed a plethora of paranormal stories, UFO sightings, true crime, unexplained objects and oddities, and more. It led us down a lot of very fun rabbit holes.

The Guide: As someone who has traveled the length and breadth of this city telling its stories, did this program take you places in the Chicago area where you had never been before?

Baer: Several! We were the fi rst television crew ever to be granted access to shoot in the creepy

“To me, Chicago is a limitless reservoir of stories, and I think it makes our lives richer to know the history behind the world around us.”
with Geoffrey Baer

basement of a North side condo building that in the 1890s was a sausage factory where Chicago’s “Sausage King” Adolph Luetgert allegedly disposed of his wife’s body after murdering her. While we were there, we actually heard some extremely weird

moaning sounds that could have originated from the furnace or the floorboards, but it defi nitely unnerved us!

We were also permitted to climb to the top of the Leaning Tower of north suburban Niles, Illinois, which is not currently open to the public. It’s a halfsized replica of the tower in Pisa, Italy erected by an industrialist in the 1930s as part of a park for his employees. At the top, we discovered that the tower contains 17th century church bells imported from Europe.

I also got to meet meteorologist Tom Skilling and interview him

in his weather center at WGNTV before he retired. That was a thrill.

The Guide: Were there burning questions you’ve always had that were answered in the course of writing and producing this special?

Baer: Yes. Why don’t we put ketchup on a Chicago hot dog? I had always heard that it was because ketchup is loaded with sugar that would ruin the flavor of the dog. But that would be just as true in Cleveland or Boston or anywhere else. So why is the ketchup prohibition specifically a Chicago thing? Food writer Monica Eng gave the true answer. (No spoiler here: you’ll have to watch the show to find out.)

The Guide: What’s your favorite mystery that you explore in the show?

Baer: Oh, that’s like asking me to choose my favorite child! Unfair. But if I had to pick, I’d say the story of the mysterious sunken submarine called “the Foolkiller,” found by a diver at the bottom of the Chicago River in 1915. It supposedly had human bones and a dog skull inside. We interviewed podcaster Mark Chrisler, who spent ten years figuring out the true story: it includes a self-promoting deep-sea diver, a daredevil who survived the Niagara rapids only to die trying to cross Lake Michigan in an ill-conceived inflatable craft, and side trips to a circus in Indiana and Chicago’s legendary Riverview Park.

The Guide: Will there be more mysteries on the companion website?

Baer: The website will include more mysteries, including one story on the 1982 Chicago-area

“We…unearthed a plethora of paranormal stories, UFO sightings, true crime, unexplained objects and oddities, and more.”

Tylenol murders, and another that reveals the origins of Chicago’s name. The website

contain a hidden manuscript? And finally, what is the “Chicago Handshake,” and what are its stomach-churning components? I will personally answer that last question!

The Guide: What do you hope curious viewers take from this program, beyond the fun of delving into these mysteries with you?

Baer: The show is fun and entertaining, and there is the “I never knew that” phenomenon that is at the core of all my work. After watching my shows, so

to know the history behind the world around us. It gives us a sense of how we got here, and what we might hope to leave for folks in the future to discover.

The Guide: Geoffrey Baer has been taking viewers on tours all over the Chicago area – and across America and to Cuba, too! – for almost 30 years. He has done this on foot; in a variety of cars, bikes, boats, and trains; and even on a plane using a drone camera. If you enjoy learning more about the region and uncovering hidden treasures while having fun along

will also have original videos that ask the questions: Why is there no Terminal 4 at O’Hare? Where does a peculiar Salvador Dalí painting really come from? Does a 20-pound hunk of concrete at University of Chicago

many people tell me, “Gee, I’ve lived here all my life and I never knew that!” Or, “I’ve passed that spot a million times and never noticed that!” Chicago is a limitless reservoir of stories, and I think it makes our lives richer

Sounds Classical

The second season of Sounds Classical launches with new episodes. On April 5, hosts Kristina Lynn and LaRob K. Rafael investigate the qualities that land a work in the “Classical Top 40.” The following week, hear the dialogue between classical music and jazz that began in the early 20th century with composers such as Duke Ellington and George Antheil. On the 19th, conductor John Jeter and composer Jarod Tate join WFMT to spotlight Native composer Louis W. Ballard. And to wrap up April, LaRob and Kristina return to a regular feature: the Sounds Classical Playlist, this time on the theme of non-traditional instrumentation (think electronics) and the influence of diverse cultures in contemporary classical music.

He is the first-ever steelpan soloist to win, let alone enter, this long-running contest. Teague-Núñez offered the jury A Visit to Hell, a composition by his father Liam Teague. WFMT is delighted to share his Symphony Center performance as well as those of his fellow finalists: 16-year-old horn player Elyse Schlesinger playing Richard Strauss and 15-year-old flutist Chloe Nam in music by Carl Reinecke. Baroque&Before

Composer and violinist Salomone Rossi, a renowned performer at the court of the Gonzagas in Mantua, is regarded as the leading Jewish musician of the late Renaissance. While antisemitism was rampant in Italy at the end of the 16th century, Mantua was much more inclusive than many Italian cities. A tolerant atmosphere allowed Jewish writers, musicians, and artists to have an important influence on the culture of the day. In a program of music of the synagogue, theater, and court by Rossi and his contemporaries, Nicholas McGegan leads the Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players and Chorale with the radiant soprano Sherezade Panthaki (Theodora in Music of the Baroque’s 2024-2025 season) as soloist.

In the Spotlight

San Francisco Symphony

Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts three spooky but popular chestnuts from the 19th century: Modest Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, and Franz Liszt’s Totentanz. Making his debut with the Symphony as soloist in the devilish miniature concerto by Liszt – a set of variations on the “Dies irae” chant tune – is Bertrand Chamayou. A leading interpreter of French music, the Toulouse-born pianist’s recording of Saint-Saëns piano concertos won Gramophone’s Recording of the Year in 2019. Chicago audiences last heard Chamayou in his impressive debut with the CSO in March of 2020.
