The Guide
Dear Member,
The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625
In these last days of summer, it’s an exciting time for WTTW drama and mystery lovers, with new episodes of Shakespeare & Hathaway, Grantchester, and COBRA, and the premiere of the second season of Guilt – the story of what happens after two brothers commit a crime in Edinburgh, and how one of them attempts to rebuild his life after serving time in prison. Catch up with season one the day of the premiere or with your Passport membership and our exclusive recaps on wttw.com, and read an interview on page 4 with lead actor Mark Bonnar, who reveals where we pick up with his character in season two and how he feels about playing him. Also on WTTW in August, we will give you a front-row seat to a special first-time event from New York’s Metropolitan Opera – the original five-act French version of Verdi’s Don Carlos, set against the backdrop of the Spanish Inquisition. Settle in to see Chicago area native Matthew Polenzani in the title role, and learn more about Matthew’s local career on wttw.com. Also enjoy this year’s Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert from Austria’s Schönbrunn Palace, featuring cellist Gautier Capucon conducted by Andris Nelsons. On WFMT, we’ll bring you four new concerts from Grant Park Music Festival, including Haydn’s oratorio The Creation with soprano and Chicago native Janai Brugger, tenor Duke Kim, and bass-baritone Douglas Williams. The WFMT Opera Series will present four charming French Baroque chamber operas plus Handel’s first opera, Almira. On wfmt.com, WFMT’s experts will rank their top 10 works by Verdi; we’ll share the long and fascinating history of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik; and we'll take a closer look at Don Carlo – originally a French-language opera, it’s usually performed in Italian but set in Spain. We’ll look into how languages like French, Italian, and German became common languages in opera. This is a month of programming you won’t want to miss. Thank you for your support as we enjoy the last bit of summer. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

"What I enjoy about playing Max is that he can turn on a sixpence if the situation requires, and that’s a very sexy, devilish quality that we can all admire."
Mark Bonnar as Max
A Q&A with Guilt star Mark Bonnar ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 28 AT 8:00 PM, the award‐winning drama Guilt returns for a new four‐part season full of more twists, turns, and deception. In an Edinburgh cellar, two gunshots ring out as across town, Max McCall (Mark Bonnar) is being released from prison. These two events gradually come together as Max tries to rebuild his life.

AUGUST
2022
Tell us about Max. Mark Bonnar: Max is an ex-lawyer who has just emerged from prison after being convicted of manslaughter of a man who was fatally hit while Max’s brother Jake was actually driving the car. Max is now trying to find a way back, but there are, of course, ulterior motives at work. Has Max changed in the two years since we last saw him? Bonnar: Yes, in that he has seen things in prison that have altered his personality somewhat. He’s still generally out for himself most of the time, but I think there’s a bit more empathy to his character now. In season two, Max initially uses Roy Lynch (Stuart Bowman),

who took over Max’s business while he was incarcerated; then he teams up with Kenny (Emun Elliott), to form a kind of legal firm. But all is not as it seems, as it usually isn’t with Max. What can you tease about Max’s story arc this time? Bonnar: All is not as it seems at the beginning… What is it about the character that you love playing so much? Bonnar: What I enjoy about playing Max is that he can turn on a sixpence if the situation requires, and that’s a very sexy, devilish quality that we can all admire. He is voraciously clever, manipulative, and a survivor, and is able to turn circumstances to his advantage. He knows how to transform himself, chameleon wise, to adapt. You can put Max into any situation and he’d probably be able to talk his way out of it if he had to. So to have him thinking on his feet so much and have so many plates to be spinning at the same time is just something that I relish. Kenny and Max are a very interesting dynamic duo this season. How would you describe their working relationship? Bonnar: Very much father and son. I think it changes considerably as the series goes on. I don’t think Max can be bothered with Kenny at the outset, and is solely using him for his own purposes at first. But as time goes by, Max begins to respect Kenny and even kind of admire him in a way, and it’s a kind of lovely journey that they go on.
How much persuasion did you need to come back for a second season? Bonnar: None whatsoever! It was a joy to do the first season, and the prospect of playing Max again was very appealing. I was kind of chomping at the bit for Neil (Forsyth) to write another one! Did you enjoy teaming up again with Emun Elliott, who plays Kenny? Bonnar: It’s always a joy to work with Emun, because he cracks me up. I think what he’s done with Kenny this season is remarkable. Kenny had gone from being an alcoholic to becoming an ace detective, and this season there’s a whole new facet to Kenny’s story in the shape of Rochelle and his relationship with her. It’s fantastic to see that blossom. How does this season differ from the first? Bonnar: Well, there are several new characters, and the pace of this season is different from the first – it’s more of a slow build.
In the first season, you had a hectic beginning and then various degrees of Max and Jake scrambling to cover up their crime. This season, it starts with Max as low as you can get and he rises from there, hopefully. Do you think Max is capable of feeling guilt? It feels as if a more apt title for the second season would be Revenge! Bonnar: I think Max is capable of feeling guilt - he’s a human being like the rest of us. I think, though, that he buries emotions like that very deeply, because he thinks they get in the way of more important tasks, like looking out for number one! But this season there’s potentially more of an emotional journey for Max. Are you like Max in any way, or do you feel that he’s a very long way away from you? Bonnar: Well, Max is in me as every character I play has to be, really! But I think he certainly represents a grossly inf lated part of some of my characteristics (at least I hope they’re grossly inflated).
Emun Elliott as Kenny
There’s an aspect of dark humor and comedy to this subject matter at times – is that something that appeals to you? Bonnar: That’s life, isn’t it? We all have drama in our lives, but what you do when you’re confronted with drama and tragedy, often, is lighten it by humor. The most obvious being giggling at a funeral ‐ that’s what we humans do, so it certainly appeals to me if I’m lucky enough to be offered a part. Are you particularly proud to be involved in such a successful project produced in Scotland, by a Scottish production team? Bonnar: I’m very proud to be a part of it. The reaction we received indicated that people were impressed that Scotland had produced it, and t hat we showed we could create something that is grown‐up, thought‐provoking, funny, and looks spectacular. People were equating it to the likes of Fargo. I think it punches way above its weight. So I think there was a real sense of pride about it, which made me proud to have helped to bring that to the small screen. Without revealing anything that might happen this season, would you like to come back for a third run and play Max again? Bonnar: Of course!
