From the President & CEO The Guide
Dear Member,
As crime in Chicago and the surrounding communities is on the rise, WTTW News and Chicago Tonight recently launched a new reporting initiative – “A Safer City” – to dive deep into neighborhood crime, violence, and public safety throughout the summer months as residents, policymakers, and community groups work to address the growing issue. is essential, solutions-driven journalism focuses on the impact of living around and with regular violence; what public safety o cials and the police are doing about the problem; how segregation and our physical environment – community centers, parks, streets, sidewalks, and highways – drive or stem crime and violence; how social media comes into play in everyday criminal activity; and what analysts and academics can bring to the discussion. For dedicated coverage, watch Chicago Tonight on Mondays at 5:30 and 10:00 pm, and nd ongoing and extensive data and investigative reporting on the WTTW News website.
In August, WTTW brings you the ve-part series Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland , to mark the 25th anniversary of the end of e Troubles, a long and bitter dispute between those who were ghting for an independent Ireland and those who believed the country should remain part of the United Kingdom. On page 4, meet the lm’s director, who explains how he approached telling the story, and what he learned from the participants. Also this month, don’t miss Curse of the Spencers, examining the turbulent family life of the future Princess Diana; and a new special, All Creatures Great and Small: Chapter ree, that takes us behind the scenes with the cast, creators, and designers in the run-up to season four of the heartwarming series. Don’t forget that you can watch Seasons 1-3 anytime with your WTTW Passport membership!
And WFMT will also take you “across the pond” in August with performances from the BBC Proms music festival. e popular “First Night of the Proms” features the BBC Singers with the BBC Symphony Chorus and Orchestra, and throughout the month we’ll feature early music ensemble Stile Antico; the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; and pianist Daniil Trifonov as soloist in Mason Bates’s Piano Concerto. Closer to home, WFMT continues to bring you more performances from Chicago’s summer festivals at Grant Park and Ravinia.
I hope you’re having a wonderful summer, and thank you for your loyal support.

WITH DIRECTOR JAMES BLUEMEL
by Daniel HautzingerQ&A T NORTHERN IRELAND ONCE UPON A TIME IN
wenty-five years ago, on April 10, 1998, the decades-long Irish conflict known as The Troubles was officially resolved with the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. More than 3,500 people were killed in the course of the struggle, which pitted mostly Catholic nationalists who wanted to join a united Ireland against predominantly Protestant loyalists fighting to stay within the United Kingdom. For thirty years, sporadic violence and bombings defined life in Northern Ireland, which saw the deployment of the British Army in its longest continuous operation.
In the five-part series Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland, ordinary people from all sides of the conflict tell stories of
their lives during The Troubles. The series was directed by James Bluemel, who used the same narrative approach in Once Upon a Time in Iraq, which aired on Frontline. We spoke to Bluemel about his distinctive approach to capturing this story, and what he learned from interviewing people about their memories of a difficult period in history.
Watch Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland beginning Monday, August 28 on WTTW, and stream on the PBS app.
The Guide: Why did you want to tell the story of The Troubles via firsthand, personal stories?
James Bluemel: There have been many documentaries
made about The Troubles. Most of those documentaries are events-led, in that they explain the context of The Troubles and what happened. But I thought there was something missing, which was how it felt to live there, and hearing it from people who experienced it firsthand and not from policymakers or politicians, but from people who lived with the consequences of those decisions. You can learn all the facts you want, but to really understand how it feels, I think we’re missing something.
The idea came from [my work on Once Upon a Time in Iraq]. The Iraqi civil war is very sectarian, and it reminded me of growing up, listening to the news, and how little I understood about a conflict that happened on my own doorstep compared to what I understood now about Iraq.
The underlying ambition or agenda for the series was always to try to build empathy. If you humanize the people on screen, you can then build empathy for their positions and see the world through their eyes a little bit, which can only be helpful.
The Guide: How did you develop trust with the participants and get them to open up about their memories and emotions?
Bluemel: There’s no shortcut to it. It took time. Northern Ireland is a small place, and The Troubles for many are still live. They’re not consigned to the past. Deciding whether you’re going to put your head above the parapet and talk openly about what you went through isn’t done lightly. Questions are asked about the film’s agenda, my agenda, the broadcaster’s agenda, and I was lucky enough to have made Once Upon a Time in Iraq which took a similar approach, and they could see the even-handedness in that film.
These interviews can span a couple of days, and you just take it very slowly. It’s very rare to have someone listen intently to you for that length of time. I think that encourages the contributor to dig into their memory because they are being listened to. Sometimes they would find and unearth memories that perhaps they haven’t remembered were even there. They weren’t accessing ready, off-the-peg anecdotes.
The Guide: Was it difficult to get people to talk about a topic that is not often discussed?
Bluemel: In Northern Ireland, the guard is still very high because in certain communities – in working class areas of Belfast or Derry – the paramilitaries are still active and still have influence. They resemble standard criminal gangs these days, with interests in drugs. In certain places, talking openly about what it’s like to live there is dangerous. But for others, [they] might feel more confident or just safer or less connected, perhaps because they’re older. Some may see value in [talking about their past] because lessons of history need to be learned, and if you maintain this shroud of silence, those lessons can never be learned because they’ll never be heard.
and she also didn’t really know she had a story to tell.
There was always a desire to bring women’s voices into this subject, because traditionally they have been ignored. For that reason, it’s quite difficult to research them and find them, so sometimes you just need a bit of luck, and we got it.
The Guide: Although the events you cover in Once Upon a Time in Iraq are more recent than The Troubles, did you find similarities in the ways that people discussed and processed memories?
The Guide: How did you find the participants?
Bluemel: Some of it was just research. You start to research who was [at an important event], who is still alive. And sometimes it was serendipitous. I was going to interview Ricky O’Rawe, an ex-IRA gunman. He brought his wife, Bernadette O’Rawe, along to the meeting. As we were having a gettingto-know-you chat, she was telling me a little about her life, and it was incredibly fascinating. She had never spoken to a journalist,
Bluemel: That’s what I found surprising. I was expecting before I started this that perhaps there won’t be that processing. Iraq is much more recent. What I found is that trauma that happened 50 years ago can still be as vivid as trauma that happened five years ago for many people. Those memories had not been marbleized. They’re not concrete. They’re still malleable, but only if you give people the time and the space to really delve back into it. Perhaps deeply embedded trauma, you learn to live with it, but once you do delve back into it, it’s still very present and difficult.

From the 2023 BBC Proms
The “First Night of the Proms” marks a triumph for the beleaguered BBC Singers, which was facing closure because of BBC budget cuts earlier this year. The 20-member group and the UK’s only full-time professional chamber choir was given a new lease on life after an angry response across the music industry and public outcry, including a threatened boycott of the Proms. Having secured alternative funding for the choir, the BBC Singers perform in this summer’s concert series, including the celebratory “First Night” and “Last Night of the Proms.”

From Gran Teatre del Liceu: The Coronation of Poppea
Existing accounts suggest that the principal role of Nero in Monteverdi’s final opera was sung by a male soprano or castrato Early modern revivals of the 1643 political masterpiece cast the Roman Emperor as a tenor for a more traditional masculine romantic lead. Later, to serve the composer’s musical intentions, casting Nero as a high mezzo-soprano “en travesti” became the norm. Australian David Hansen is one of the new generation of high countertenors capable of convincingly portraying Nero both musically and dramatically.
