The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

Homelessness is a widespread and complex issue in Chicago and other American cities, with no quick answers or simple solutions. While many often look away from the problem, WTTW will spend a year focused on the challenging experiences and unique perspectives of unhoused people across Chicago’s neighborhoods in Firsthand: Homeless, beginning February 19 at wttw.com/firsthand. I hope you will explore this award-winning, multiplatform project throughout 2024. On page 4, you’ll find an interview with members of the production team. During this Black History Month, WTTW will present Gospel, a new two-part miniseries from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. that takes you deep into the origin story of Black spirituality through sermon and song, beginning in Chicago. Also new this month are The Dream Whisperer, chronicling how a basketball team from a small, historically Black college triumphed over adversity; Shuttlesworth, the story of Birmingham civil rights leader Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth; and this year’s Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, honoring literature that confronts racism and explores diversity. WTTW’s full Black History Month schedule is on page 7. On WFMT, listen for a new feature, Celebrating African American Artists, which will include an interview with composer, trumpeter, and pianist Terence Blanchard conducted by Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips. Black History Month programming continues with I, Too, Sing America: Music in the Life of Langston Hughes hosted by Terrance McKnight; a special presentation of Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha; and Reginald Mobley and Baptiste Trotignon performing original spiritual arrangements and works by Florence Price. You'll find more information about WFMT's Black History Month content on page 21. Have a wonderful February, and thank you for your membership. Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

WFMT Orchestra Series The European portion of the WFMT Orchestra Series concludes with the Oslo Philharmonic led by chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä in Shostakovich’s brilliant Fifth Symphony and both of Ravel’s piano concertos with Yuja Wang. Then, in time for Chinese New Year, the series pivots to programs from Beijing’s National Centre for the Performing Arts showcasing traditional and new classical works by Chinese composers alongside familiar Western classical pieces. Led by chief conductor Lü Jia, the NCPA Orchestra made an “impressive showing in [their] Chicago debut” (Chicago Classical Review) during the ensemble’s first North American tour in 2014.

But he was also a music lover, and some of the works of which he was most proud were collaborations with composers and musicians. Terrance McKnight explores recordings of select pieces of Hughes’s musical works, a few of which were never performed again in their entirety after their original production.

Chinese soprano Ying Fang has been praised by the Financial Times for “a voice that can stop time, pure and rich and open and consummately expressive.” She co-stars with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo in the Met’s production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice this spring, heard on WFMT in June. Chicago audiences have recently been treated to two of her signature roles at Lyric Opera – Zerlina in Don Giovanni and Pamina in The Magic Flute. To commemorate Chinese New Year, host Oliver Camacho profiles Ying Fang, bass-baritone Shenyang, tenor Yu Qiang Dai, soprano Dilber Yunus, and other Chinese artists.

Reginald Mobley

Listening to Singers Reginald Mobley and Baptiste Trotignon illuminate the relationship between two pillars of Black music: gospel and classical. Hearing Trotignon’s jazzy arrangements of songs like “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” and “There is a Balm in Gilead” in Mobley’s individualistic countertenor alongside Florence Price’s “Because” (text by Paul Laurence Dunbar) fulfills Antonín Dvořák’s prophecy that African American folksong would shape the future of classical music in America.

Daniel Harding

Chicago Symphony Orchestra An audience favorite, Gustav Holst’s The Planets, was the centerpiece work for Daniel Harding’s return to the podium at Orchestra Hall in November. The British conductor is artistic director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the newly appointed music director of the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and a qualified airline pilot(!). He last led the CSO in 2006 but appeared at Symphony Center with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2019. An added draw for this program was the first appearance this season of the full chorus for Brahms’s Schiksalslied. Robert Schumann’s Byronesque Manfred Overture rounded out the highly engaging concert.
