On WFMT throughout the summer, we’ll transport you to the Grant Park Music Festival and Highland Park’s Ravinia Festival. Don’t miss the rousing annual Independence Day Salute on July 4 from the Pritzker Pavilion and Ravinia’s opening night of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2024 residency.
Right after A Capitol Fourth, our annual live birthday celebration from Washington, DC, WTTW journeys to Milwaukee to bring you another quintessentially American institution: The Republican National Convention (and next month from right here in Chicago, the Democratic National Convention). For four consecutive nights beginning July 15, following live gavel-to-gavel coverage and analysis from the PBS News Hour team led by anchors Geoff Bennett and Amna Nawaz, Chicago Tonight host Brandis Friedman and our WTTW News correspondents offer local perspective, live at 5:30 and 10:00 pm and on wttw.com.
Also this month, we’ll bring you a third season of the popular British drama series Hotel Portofino; a look back at The Gods of Tennis, recalling the fierce rivalry between three pairs of legendary players competing at Wimbledon in the 1970s and ’80s; and a new miniseries from NOVA exploring the dramatic effects of climate change on the ecosystem of one American region in Sea Change: Gulf of Maine. Learn more about why this body of water is warming faster than 99% of the global ocean in our interview with the producer on page 4.
On WFMT, we’ll transport you to the Grant Park Music Festival live from Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park and Highland Park’s Ravinia Festival. Our July programs from Grant Park kick off with the rousing annual Independence Day Salute on July 4, and throughout the month listen for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5; Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini featuring pianist Clayton Stephenson; Beethoven’s iconic Fifth Symphony; and an evening of works by Bruckner, Sibelius, and Janácek. And we’ll be live from Ravinia on opening night of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s 2024 residency, as conductor Marin Alsop leads the CSO with pianist Michelle Cann in a centenary performance of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue ; and soprano Masabene Cecilia Rangwanasha, featured in Samuel Barber’s Knoxville, Summer of 1915.
We hope you enjoy everything the summer season has to offer, and thank you for your continuing support.
Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Q&A
with Sea Change Producer Brian Skerry
by Daniel Hautzinger
Sea Change
Gulf of Maine
A SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF
Abody of water just off the coast of New England is warming 99% faster than the global ocean, causing rapid changes that affect not just the organisms that live in the waters, but also the fishermen and other coastal residents who rely upon them. The new three-part NOVA series Sea Change: Gulf of Maine, airing Wednesdays at 9:00 pm
beginning July 24 and streaming on wttw.com and the PBS app, dives into those waters to explore the effects of warming oceans resulting from climate change.
We spoke about Sea Change with Brian Skerry, a producer of the series and an acclaimed underwater photographer who has shot stories for National Geographic for 26 years.
The Guide: What was the origin of this project?
Brian Skerry: My backstory is that I am a diver, underwater photographer, and filmmaker. I grew up in Massachusetts; I now live in Maine, where I began diving back in 1977 or 1978. Those waters where I started and still occasionally dive today are all part of the Gulf of Maine, a temperate body
of water that stretches from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, all the way up through Nova Scotia, Canada.
I wanted to do a story about the Gulf of Maine not just because it’s my home, but also because it has been identified as the epicenter of global ocean climate change: it’s warming 99% faster than the rest of the global ocean. I thought now might be the time to shine a light on what’s happening there as a way of looking at the global planet.
The Guide: What makes the Gulf of Maine special?
Skerry: I’ve always been drawn to temperate waters. I’ve gotten to dive in some of the most extraordinary places on the planet, but there’s really something about temperate waters. They tend to be some of the richest, most dynamic places on the planet. The visibility is usually not great because there are so many nutrients, and those lead to an explosion of life. You see kelp forest, and lots of colorful invertebrates, whales, and sharks. In a place like the Gulf of Maine, the biggest animal – the North Atlantic right whale – and one of the smallest animals – baby lobsters – both eat the same thing: little zooplankton called copepods. Despite it being more difficult and challenging to photograph or film in those kinds of conditions, there are wonderful stories in these places, and they help people understand why our oceans are so magical.
We very much live on an ocean planet. If you look at Earth from space, you can see that it’s mostly water. About 72% of Earth’s surface is ocean, and 98% of Earth’s biosphere where life can exist is
Film producer and underwater photographer Brian Skerry
ocean. Every other breath that a human being takes comes from the sea. It is the greatest carbon sink on Earth. It takes in more carbon and gives us back more oxygen. Even if you don’t care about the ocean, you are directly connected to it. And the health of the ocean determines the health of everything on this planet, including humans.
I still think a lot of folks in this country and around the world think that climate change is something that’s happening elsewhere, not in their backyard. The Gulf of Maine shows that it’s not something distant, and it has direct consequences in our lives.
The Guide: Is there a particular story from this series that really sticks with you?
Skerry: One that is heartbreaking is about terns. These are birds that migrate thousands of miles and stop in the Gulf of Maine on a little island where they nest in the summer. Historically, they feed their chicks silver-colored slender-bodied fish such as herring or sand lance or whiting, that are easy for the little baby birds to swallow.
The health of the ocean determines the health of everything on this planet, including humans.
But as climate change has increased the seawater temperatures, those native fish are less abundant. Instead, we’re getting an invasive species known as butterfish, which are silver but wide-bodied. The parent terns go out foraging to find food for their chicks, and they see a silver school of fish near the surface. They dive down, grab one of these, fly back, and give it to their chick.
But the chick can’t swallow a butterfish because it’s too wide. It’s heartbreaking, because they end up spitting it out.
The mortality rate of those chicks is increasing in the years when the water temperature really spikes and those butterfish are more plentiful and the native species are not. I think those kinds of visuals really don’t need much of an explanation. Somebody can see that and just say, ‘Okay, that’s what climate change means. It means that the baby birds are all going to die.’ You hope that they can extrapolate and connect the dots and realize what that means for them. If the oceans are dying, it means we’re in trouble, too.
The Guide: In your decades diving in the Gulf of Maine, have changes due to climate change been obvious?
Skerry: The easternmost town in the United States, Eastport,
Maine, has 30-foot tides, so there’s an exchange of nutrients every six hours that is unique. I used to go up there a couple of times a year, and there were places I could just walk in off a beach, I didn’t even need a boat. And it was like going into an aquarium or a jewelry store. There was color everywhere. In the last four years on this project, I did two trips there and it was like a ghost town. I walked into these places and there was hardly anything –it was just mud. The water was noticeably warmer to me. It was devastating, because I remember that not that long ago this place was so vibrant. And I found that in a lot of places.
People think climate change is moving slowly: “Oh, that will happen in 50 years, 100 years.” No, no – it’s happening fast. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Introductions
Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras’ presented their final concert of the 2023-24 season at Orchestra Hall on May 19. Highlights from the season finale include Stacy Garrop’s Pandora Undone, a piece based on the famous greek mythology of Pandora opening up the forbidden box, releasing evils –and hope – into the world. Showcasing a deep bench of woodwind and brass players, the Symphony Orchestra delighted the audience with Richard Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks. Music Director Allen Tinkham led the orchestra in Stravinsky’s famous Petrushka Suite to close the ambitious program. With a dazzling array of rhythms and textures, syncopated melodies, bold brass, and percussive accents, the talented students concluded their performance in triumph, eliciting a massive standing ovation from the crowd.

Hosts Kristina Lynn and LaRob K. Rafael welcome Enrique Mazzola for a lively debate over who is the superior composer: Giacomo Puccini or Giuseppe Verdi. Music Director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, Mazzola is renowned as an expert in Verdi, having already presented Attila, Macbeth, Ernani, Don Carlos, Aida, and soon, Rigoletto to Chicago audiences. But it may not safe to assume the odds are against Puccini. Maestro Mazzola is also deeply immersed in the entire oeuvre of Verdi’s younger compatriot as Lyric is set to present a survey of Puccini’s operas with a concert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death with the inimitable Sondra Radvanovsky. Tune in to see which composer triumphs exclaiming “Vincerò! Vincerò!”
