The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

This fall, we hope you have been enjoying our Sunday evening triple bill of femaleled British crime dramas featuring Lesley Manville as inquisitive book editor Susan Ryeland on Magpie Murders; Nicola Walker as the wry and charming police squad chief Annika; and Kate Phillips as a fearless Victorian private eye in the second season of Miss Scarlet and the Duke. We have an interview with Phillips for you on page 4. We’re celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a new American Masters profile of indigenous folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie; The Warrior Tradition, about Native Americans’ experiences in the military; and the Native America series. On wttw.com, try a recipe from an indigenous chef trying to popularize Native American cuisine and discover Chicago locales where traces of Native peoples still exist. And WTTW News and Chicago Tonight will provide extensive coverage of the midterm elections to help voters make informed choices when they head to the polls. On WFMT, listen for conversations with Native American composer Raven Chacon on winning the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Joffrey Ballet artistic director Ashley Wheater on the company’s collaboration with CSO, and composer Jessie Montgomery on curating the CSO MusicNOW series. And Live from WFMT continues this month with early music ensemble Black Tulip, cellist Alexander Hersh and pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion, and the Orion Ensemble with violist Stephen Boe. On wfmt.com, discover five must-listen Studs Terkel conversations about Native American history, education, and literature; and learn about the musical instruments played by indigenous tribes in the Midwest. On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT in this month of Thanksgiving, I am grateful for your continued support. Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

Q&A

Miss Scarlet and the Duke star

Miss Scarlet and the Duke Sundays at 7:00 pm

K ATE PHILLIPS

Not only do we get to continue enjoying season 2 of Miss Scarlet and the Duke this month as it airs Sundays at 7:00 pm on WTTW, but once the season wraps up, there will be two “behind-the-scenes” specials premiering on November 27. Miss Scarlet and the Duke: Secrets Revealed does what its title promises; and immediately following, the intrepid Victorian detective is also featured in Mysterious Women of Masterpiece Mystery.

establish herself as a private detective. This is a profession never before attempted by a woman, and she questions whether she can do it. By the end of the series, she believes she has what it takes – it’s clear to her that she knows her craft and has some great instincts. With regard to her relationship with the Duke, it’s ambiguous but they clearly have an amazing connection. As a viewer, you’re desperately rooting for them to find the romance.

Actor Kate Phillips, who plays Eliza Scarlet, shares some thoughts about her role, the series, and the state of Eliza’s evolving relationship with the Duke.

There’s a dedicated fan base called the Scarleteers, which is lovely to see. How did you find the reaction after the first series?

Can you give us a brief recap of where the story ended in series 1?

Phillips: You never know how a show is going to be received when you’re filming, so it only brings you joy when you discover that there’s a collective of people who love it as much as you do. After it aired

Kate Phillips: In the first series, Eliza’s aim is to

in the U.S., we got a real sense that people really enjoyed it. Our amazing sound mixer has some friends in North America, and when we were filming the second series, he relayed a story about how excited they got over a Zoom call when he revealed which show he was working on. I think his wife was working on the film Knives Out at the time, but their excitement about Miss Scarlet and the Duke was ten times bigger in comparison!

Kate Phillips

In what way does Eliza relate to women in the modern day?

What first attracted you to the role? Phillips: The writing. You could tell from the first few pages that the show had a specific tone to it - it was so warm and bouncy. That was so true of the role, too. Eliza has an awesome mix of feistiness and naïveté that has been so fun to play. I find there is a real pace and rhythm to many of the scenes, and at the end there’s often a cute little button – I love having that as an actor. What’s the relationship between Eliza and William like in this series? Phillips: I feel there are many things that are left unsaid between them in this series. This year, the dynamic between them feels a lot more knowing, and a lot more painful. The fans will also be happy to hear there is as much sparring and comedy as ever. Eliza reopens one of William’s cases in the first episode. How does this affect their relationship?

“It’s truly awesome to see a character strive for success and if they stumble, to do it with a bit of smile.”

Phillips: I think that storyline sets the tone for the whole series. It’s a clever bit of writing, because it presents the major obstacle in their way, stopping them from being together. Eliza is still paving her way as a private detective and as much as she wants him in her life, her work is still at the forefront. She’s still in the process of proving herself to the world and she won’t let anything get in the way of that. Even the Duke. She’s going to put her work before their relationship, and the question remains as to whether their bond can sustain that.

Phillips: I think Eliza gives women today the permission to do what they want, especially because she’s doing something against all the odds. Hattie (played by Jessie Cave) says something to Eliza that I really like in the first episode of the new series: ‘You know who you are and what you want. Many may not approve, but you simply do not care. I call that freedom indeed’. It’s a really nice little phrase, as there is a lot of fear out there about what people think and whether or not you can succeed as a woman. There’s something about Eliza that feels really empowering. It’s truly awesome to see a character strive for success and if they stumble, to do it with a bit of smile. Is there anything that you would want to bring back from Victorian times? Phillips: Well, the first thing I would say is that they can keep their corsets! Actually, a few weeks in, I had stopped wearing my corset. We had some very serious discussions about it. While corsets can be useful for finding the character, it got to the point where I was just uncomfortable. The costumes have a really beautiful structure, and we quickly discovered that you couldn’t tell when I wasn’t wearing it. It was incredibly liberating. What is it about Miss Scarlet and the Duke that makes it unique? Phillips: I think it has all the elements that you love about a period drama, while bringing everything that you thought was sepia or black and white into vivid color, along with a surprising amount of wit and humor. This interview has been edited due to clarity and space constraints, and is courtesy of GBH, Boston.

Can you relate to your character at all? Phillips: Perhaps in some of her more vulnerable moments. I didn’t have an upbringing like Eliza’s, but any actor relishes the moments you can dip into the bits of you that feel more complex. Behind all of her bravado there is softness and a loneliness,

even. It’s the feisty and more confident version of Eliza where I feel I get to be someone else. It’s in those moments that I get to stride around saying clever things I wouldn’t ever think of saying in my own life. It’s great.

We continue with Niccolò Paganini performed by violinist Julia Fischer, and by violinist Julian Sitkovetsky with his mother, Bella Davidovich, accompanying him on the piano. Bill ends the week with a full hour devoted to Frédéric Chopin performed by some of the great prodigypianists of today – Maurizio Pollini, Garrick Ohlsson, and Frederic Chiu.
