We have an exciting fall season in store for you as we present a full schedule of new content, including a project from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Making Black America: Through the Grapevine. This four-part series chronicles the vast social networks and organizations created by and for Black people that transformed our country. Gates recounts the establishment of the Prince Hall Masons in 1775 through the formation of allBlack towns and business districts, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the power of social media.
We also hope you settle in on Sunday nights for new seasons of Miss Scarlet and the Duke, Magpie Murders, and Annika – a triple bill of female detectives (read more about this on page 4). Also this month, we continue Hispanic Heritage Month with POV: The Last Out, the inspiring story of three Cuban baseball players who risk exile to train in Central America as they chase their dreams of playing in the major leagues, and Dia de los Muertos, a musical celebration of this much-anticipated holiday by people of Mexican heritage everywhere. We’ll also welcome a new PBS Kids series to our schedule – Rosie’s Rules – which follows the adventures of Rosie Fuentes, an inquisitive and hilarious 5-year-old girl just starting to learn about the world beyond her family walls. On wttw.com, discover how the TV adaptation of Magpie Murders differs from Anthony Horowitz’s novel; get Geoffrey Baer’s top picks for this year’s Open House Chicago as he films his next tour, The Most Beautiful Places in Chicago; and try recipes from new seasons of Lidia’s Kitchen and Sara’s Weeknight Meals.
On WFMT, listen for a new WFMT Presents with Sheku Kanneh-Mason, featuring music from the celebrated cellist’s new album, Song. Also on WFMT Presents, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a look at European Baroque dance rhythms in South America, and Polish Heritage Month by highlighting the Warsaw Autumn Festival. In addition, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra series opens with a world premiere by Eric Nathan and Aaron Diehl performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Finally, join us for Verdi’s Aida from LA Opera, with three outstanding Black singers in principal roles. On wfmt.com, preview five anticipated Chicago opera productions, including the local premiere of Szymanowski’s King Roger. For Halloween, enjoy our spine-tingling playlist of cinema’s best horror movie soundtracks, and also some classical “candy” from Leonard Bernstein, Maurice Ravel, Amy Beach, and more.
On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I hope you are excited as I am about our fall season, and thank you for your support.

October brings a wide array of new and exciting programs to WTTW. From an eagerly anticipated returning detective series to several scintillating new dramas to a nostalgic look back at an iconic how-to program to a whirlwind tour of European art history, you can watch it all on WTTW, online at wttw.com/watch, or on the PBS Video app for mobile, smart TVs, and streaming devices. Here are a few highlights:
On Sundays beginning October 16, settle in for an engaging “lady detective” triple bill. There’s a second season of Miss Scarlet and the Duke as the intrepid private eye Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) returns to investigate more baffling cases in Victorian London. Then, travel northeast to Suffolk to meet the inquisitive book ed itor-turned-amateur sleuth Susan Ryeland (Lesley Manville) in Magpie Murders, in a new miniseries based on the novel by Anthony Horowitz. Finally, head north to the waters around Glasgow, Scotland in Annika, as detective inspector Annika Strandhed (Nicola Walker) fishes numerous murder victims from waterways
by Julia Maishwhile navigating an equally turbulent homelife. Add to that the new feminist Spanish series La Otra Mirada late on Sunday nights, Broadchurch costarring Oscar winner Olivia Colman on Thursdays, and Sister Boniface Mysteries, Shakespeare & Hathaway, and The Fall on Saturday nights, and you’ve got an abundance of strong, resourceful women who are taking down names and kicking…well, you get the idea.
Speaking of strong women, here’s another one in training! In Rosie’s Rules, a new series for preschoolers, five-year-old Rosie is just beginning to learn about the fascinating, baffling, thrilling world beyond her home. Laugh along with your kids as she tries to make sense of the world’s most mystifying concepts. Hint: It doesn’t always go according to plan.
Magpie Murders: Lesley Manville as Susan RyelandIf Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. hosts, writes, and produces a series, it’s sure to be fascinating, and his latest, Making Black America: Through the Grapevine , is no exception. “For centuries, ‘the Grapevine’ has connected Black Americans in formal and infor mal networks not just as a way of communicating but of build ing and sustaining communities large and small,” he says. “From churches to fraternal organiza tions to Black Twitter, this is the story of how a people did more than survive the onslaught of enslavement and segregation. They redefined America and its cultural gifts to the world.” The series takes us from 1775 through the present day, highlighting the vibrant cultural and social spaces at the heart of the African American experience.
Also this month, enjoy new and revealing profiles of the leg endary freedom fighter Harriet Tubman (yet another strong woman!), and influential aboli tionist leader Frederick Douglass.
As the groundbreaking how-to home improvement series This Old House kicks off its 44th season along with a new season of Ask This Old House, enjoy The House that Norm Built, a nostalgic look back at the career of the show’s master carpenter Norm Abram, who is retiring at age 73. Whether you’re a professional home renovator or someone who wouldn’t know a lug wrench from a level, take a moment to celebrate a man who most certainly would. Fun fact: this program airs on Norm’s birthday!
Travel expert and prolific author Rick Steves delves into a new as pect of his familiar stomping ground: art history. In Rick Steves Art of Europe, he climbs deep into prehistoric tombs, gets up close and personal with Michelangelo’s dome in Vatican City, and marvels at the works of such masters as Van Gogh and Picasso.
“Fall is one of the best times of the year, when we are excited to welcome so many fantastic new shows to all of WTTW’s platforms,” said Lisa Tipton, WTTW’s Head of Programming. “There really is something for everyone – dramas, documentaries, new how-to content, and a new children’s series - and we’re proud that we can make them available to our viewers.”
