On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I hope you are excited as I am about our fall season, and thank you for your support.

2 SEPTEMBER 2022 Dear Member, I have the honor of sharing that, beginning September 18, WTTW will present The U.S. and the Holocaust, a new Ken Burns film that tells the story of how the American people grappled with one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century, and how this struggle tested the ideals of our democracy. By examining the periods leading up to and during the Holocaust with fresh eyes, this new work dispels competing myths that Americans either were ignorant of the unspeakable persecution that Jews faced in Europe, or that they looked on with callous indifference. Turn to page 4 for a conversation between Burns and film director Steven Spielberg, and explore our website for extra content throughout the month including a look at the history and architecture of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

September also marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, and we’ll celebrate with the 35th Hispanic Heritage Awards. Among this year’s honorees is the multi-genre rock band Los Lobos. We’ll also present a new season of Pati’s Mexican Table, hosted by chef, teacher, and food writer Pati Jinich, who brings authentic Mexican flavors, colors, textures, and warmth into American kitchens. And we’ll bring back the poignant Chicago Stories documentary, Our Soldiers, Our Lady of Guadalupe, which tells the story of Chicago’s first and oldest Mexican-American parish and the devastating loss of 12 of its parishioners during the Vietnam War. On wttw.com, Geoffrey Baer explores architectural sites that illustrate the history of Latinos in the Chicago area, and we'll share a special salsa recipe for Mexican Independence Day.

most significant of these, I think, was our failure to respond ade quately to the Holocaust. The United States let in more refugees than any other sovereign nation, but had we done 10 or 20 times that many, we still would have failed. We like to see ourselves as a good people and a nation of immigrants welcoming others, but in fact, we’ve been as unwelcoming as we’ve been welcoming. And when Europe’s Jews needed us most, we failed. Even after we knew what had happened in the concentration camps, only 5% of Americans wanted to let in more Jews.

The U.S. and the Holocaust premieres on WTTW on Sunday, September 18 at 7:00 pm.

Steven Spielberg: Let me start by quoting something from your film. In 1943, Freda Kirchwey wrote for The Nation magazine, “We have it in our power to rescue this doomed people yet we did not lift a hand to do it, or perhaps it would be fair to say we lifted one cautious hand encased in a tight fitting glove of quotas and visas and affidavits and a thick layer of prejudice.” Why did you, Lynn, and Sarah decide to make a film about the U.S. and the Holocaust?

KEN BURNS

A Conversation About The U.S. and the Holocaust

Steven Spielberg and Ken Burns:

Spielberg: So the golden door wasn’t open for everyone? We have responsibilitya to tell these stories –the bad…but also the good. You cannot separate them.”

Ken Burns: I think that we see ourselves as an exceptional nation. But we must come to terms with our great failings, and one of the Ken Burns

The denial of a simple thing called the truth is thatsomethingisshocking.”

Film director Steven Spielberg

Burns: I think it’s rooted in deepseated antisemitism. People feel powerless, and are convinced that other people are their enemies.

Burns: They didn’t want Jewish people here.

STEVEN SPIELBERG

Burns: Those narratives take the opacity of the six million lost and make it into a human story. And it’s all about potential - who is missing and what didn’t they do? What symphonies weren’t written? What children weren’t raised well with love and attention? What gardens weren’t tended to?

Spielberg: How do you ex plain the ongoing denial of the Holocaust?

Burns: It was open for many, and Emma Lazarus’ wonderful poem immortalizes the sense of welcome. But a few years later, Thomas Bailey Eldrich, the edi tor of The Atlantic, wrote another poem that said, “white goddess, let’s close the door, let’s keep it pure.” Racism, antisemitism, na tivism, anti-immigrant sentiment, they are consistent throughout our history. We have a respon sibility to tell these stories – the bad, as we are discussing here – but also the good. You cannot separate them.

Spielberg: You bring the film’s coda right up to the present day, in cluding events around January 6. How connected do you think these issues are?

If you feel powerless in the face of a system that you think is rigged against you, you may be driven to scapegoat others. It’s always someone else’s fault; they’re not like us. It’s just a step away from saying that the Holocaust is exaggerated.

Spielberg: Ken, what do you hope is going to be the major takeaway from this film?

Spielberg: How important was it to include all the personal narra tives in the film? The Shoah Foundation has spent years collecting 53,000 Holocaust survivor testimonies. But to see the human toll in the eyes of the survivors who are speaking moved me more than anything.

Spielberg: What cure for cancer wasn’t found?

2022 SEPTEMBER  5

Burns: Exactly. This is what we missed, along with the lives they lost and the families who lost loved ones. These people remind us that it happened, and that the partic ulars of it are still important and still worth knowing.

Spielberg: This film demystifies so much about how we see ourselves. I’ve done a lot of work with the Shoah Foundation and I’m very involved in the history of the global survivor community. And yet, in watching this film I was struck by the culpability of our government that did so much to close the golden door because of fears based on stereotyping.

Spielberg: There were so many in the State Department who fought against the St. Louis landing because of the more than 900 Jewish refugees aboard.

Burns: It’s a heartbreaking story. The St. Louis sailed from Germany with refugees bound for Havana. When they arrived, only a handful of the passengers were allowed in, so they sailed up and down the Florida coast. One of our survivors was on board and describes ask ing his dad what those lights were in the distance. He recalls his father saying, “that’s Miami.” The United States denied them entry, as did Canada. Ultimately the ship returned to Europe and many of those refugees were killed by the Nazi regime.

Spielberg: Holocaust de nial is what motivated me to make Thomas Keneally’s book Schindler’s List into a film. The denial of a simple thing called the truth is something that is shocking. Burns: It’s that denial that is at the heart of the success of the national socialist party for a while.

If you begin to believe in the idea that some races are inherently better or above others, if you ac cept these lies and others about the problems a society may face, you begin to see already fragile institutions unravel.

Burns: It’s very important when you’re discussing the Holocaust not to equalize things. But we see the same arguments, the same tropes, the same authoritarian tendencies, the same bad actors, the same liars on the stage. And it seemed important to us to show that many of these tendencies are still with us today, alarmingly so.

Burns: I want people to understand the fragility of the institutions that we take for granted. Richard Powers, the novelist, said that the best arguments in the world won’t change a single person’s point of view. The only thing that can do that is a good story.

This three-part film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein tells the story of how the American people grappled with one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century. By examining events leading up to and during the Holocaust with fresh eyes, this documentary dispels the competing myths that Americans either were ignorant of what was happening in Europe, or that they merely looked on with callous indifference.
