Air Check Dear Member, This month, be sure to join us for the premiere of the cross-platform three-part series 10 Homes, Parks, and Towns that Changed America, hosted by Geoffrey Baer, which spotlights the special places that change the way Americans live, work, and play. Explore American architecture, design, and urban planning as Geoffrey shows how our homes, towns, and parks reflect our nation’s history, values, ingenuity, and hopes for the future. With the series, we will also launch an immersive mobile website at wttw.com/10thatchanged where you can discover more homes, towns, and parks; exclusive video and other stories; interactive games and features; a timeline and map across America; and more. Also in April, WTTW11 brings you the premiere of Ken Burns’ fascinating two-part biography of baseball player and civil rights activist Jackie Robinson, the first to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball; and we will also revisit two other popular Ken Burns series: JAZZ and The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. Enjoy more episodes of our digital series Chat, Please! and watch the fun and informative “Chef’s Choice” episode of Check, Please!, which the Chicago Tribune called “must-see TV for any Chicagoan who dines out.” There will be new episodes of popular favorites Call the Midwife, Father Brown, and Death in Paradise, and the new action-packed detective series Luther, starring Idris Elba. Don’t miss The Interview Show, hosted by Mark Bazer; Point Taken, a weekly interactive panel discussion series; the inside stories of Britain’s Prince Philip, Wallis Simpson, and Pope (now Saint) John Paul; and a remembrance of the young diarist Anne Frank. And, finally, we close out April with a new season of WTTW’s landmark music series Soundstage, which will commence with a rousing concert by country legend Toby Keith, taped in our own Grainger Studio. Watch all of this anytime and anywhere – on WTTW11, on wttw.com/video, or via the PBS video app. On 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com, as the worldwide celebration of William Shakespeare 400 rolls on, we devote April 23 (Shakespeare’s birthday) to musical inspirations from the Bard’s astounding dramatic legacy; check out wfmt.com for related content. We’ll be featuring comedians and musical humor on April Fool’s Day and, from the Metropolitan Opera, we present new productions of Strauss’ Elektra, Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux, Verdi’s Otello and Simon Boccanegra, and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. Be sure to take advantage of your very own Member Perks on page 4 and many more at wfmt.com/ benefits. Each month, you’ll find a wide variety of restaurant, theatre, museum, concert, and other discounts, so you can make the most of everything Chicago has to offer. The film explores how the national park system came to be, and examines some – but not all – of how these majestic places came to be The National Parks.

Father Brown (New Season) Based on the short stories by G. K. Chesterton, Father Brown (Mark Williams) follows the kindly cleric as he solves crimes in his community. Many years spent hearing his parishioners’ confessions have given him an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. But the stories are not concerned with judgment – Father Brown is more interested in saving souls than in bringing the guilty to justice.

Verdi’s Otello Live from the Met

Assad Brothers on Relevant Tones

Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, also called Vespers of the Blessed Virgin, combines brilliant instrumental writing, elaborate choruses, solo arias, and duets. Jane Glover conducts Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. Dennis Moore hosts.

Just in time for this year’s Shakespeare celebration: a new Metropolitan Opera production of Verdi’s Otello. This opened the Met’s current season last September. It returns for spring performances including a Saturday matinee.

Brazilian guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad have been performing and recording together for decades, re-inventing guitar technique along the way. Seth samples their recordings with special emphasis on works composed just for them.

Igudesman & Joo: You Just Have to Laugh

As part of our April 1 comedy celebration, we’ll feature the musical-humor duo of violinist Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Hyung-ki Joo. Concert-hall audiences, radio listeners, and YouTube fans have long been enjoying the pair’s mashups of classical music, pop culture, and general zaniness. Their dialogues, mixing scholarship with verbal hijinks, provide an enlightening yet comic spin on the average classical-music experience. Igudesman and Joo met at England’s Yehudi Menuhin School. Both have had successful concert careers as individuals; both are also composers. We hope you’ll join us for some laughs.

The CSO Plays Sibelius’ Finnish Epic

Finnish-born guest conductor EsaPekka Salonen leads the Chicago Symphony in Sibelius’ cycle of tone poems variously called Four Lemminkainen Legends or Four Legends from the Kalevala. The Kalevala is usually described as Finland’s national epic poem, but it hasn’t come down to us in written form from ancient times. Rather, it was compiled in the early 19th century by a physician and scholar named Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884), who created fifty separate poetic cantos using traditional oral folklore and mythology that he collected during a long series of field trips. Many of the tales are about the super-hero Lemminkainen, including his adventures with the maidens of Saari and on the island of the dead. Sibelius chose four Lemminkainen stories for his cycle. The best known is The Swan of Tuonela. Our special includes the complete work, plus other Sibelius and some Mozart, Bartok, and Anna Clyne.

Jeffrey Kahane in Milwaukee and New York

Kahane made his piano-recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 1983 and his conducting debut at the Oregon Bach Festival five years later. He’s conducted a number of American orchestras, often leading concerto performances from the keyboard. He’s music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and had a long association with the Colorado Symphony. He’ll be featured on symphony broadcasts on two consecutive evenings in early April: conducting the Milwaukee Symphony and playing Beethoven with them, then performing with the New York Philharmonic, a fantasy for piano and orchestra that Andrew Norman composed especially for him.

Friday 15 Collectors’ Corner Spotlights Jorge Grundman

Jorge Grundman (b. 1961) is a Spanish composer, musicologist, performer, and teacher who was trained at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. His initial success came as a pop musician and songwriter. His record label and foundation, Non Profit Music, promotes contemporary music of the kind he calls “consonant” – new music that is tonal and communicates with audiences. His music has been performed by groups including the national orchestra of Ecuador and the Brodsky Quartet, but he is not well known in the United States. Henry Fogel will attempt to remedy that oversight during this month’s sequence of Collectors’ Corner.

Live from WFMT: Haymarket Opera Preview

Kerry Frumkin welcomes Craig Trompeter and his colleagues from Chicago’s Haymarket Opera Company to preview their May performances of La Calisto by Francesco Cavalli (16021676). Regarded as an important successor to the pioneering Claudio Monteverdi, Cavalli composed a number of operas for Venetian theaters that are little known today. La Calisto, like many of them, reinterprets ancient mythology, in this case a tale from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, about the god Jupiter and his love for the nymph Calisto, who follows the cult of the virgin huntress Diana. Haymarket’s website tells us the libretto brings in a number of comic subplots for which Cavalli provided lyrical and inventive music. Some of it will be emanating from WFMT’s Levin Studio.

Music of the Sephardim on Fiesta Sefarad is the name the Spanish Jews gave to Spain, and thus they have become known as Sephardic Jews or Sephardim. Expelled from Spain in the late Middle Ages along with the Muslims – or Moors – the Sephardim took their culture and their language, Ladino, to North Africa, Greece, Turkey, and the Netherlands. Then over these past several hundred years, many Sephardic Jews emigrated to the New World, especially the USA, Mexico, Argentina, and Uruguay, and there is also a Sephardic community in Israel. Music is a major part of Sephardic tradition, and Elbio Barilari will be sampling it for us.
