Air Check Dear Member, One of the true privileges we enjoy as a public media organization is the opportunity to zero in on compelling local stories, telling them across television and digital platforms and in considerable depth. A case in point: this month, we are excited to launch a year-long community engagement initiative, My Neighborhood: Pilsen which shines a spotlight on a group of local residents who are working together to make their South Side neighborhood a better place to live. Join us on April 27 for this new documentary and a live town hall on WTTW11, which will also stream live on wttw.com. At the same time, a new website will launch at wttw.com/myneighborhood, where you’ll find more stories of the neighborhood and key turning points in Pilsen history. And, we’ll be out in the community throughout the spring and summer with community screenings and other events. Also on WTTW11 this month, several popular series return for new seasons: Father Brown and Death in Paradise on Saturday evenings (where they will join the quirky new series 800 Words, from Australia); and Call the Midwife and Home Fires on Sunday nights. Look for a searing installment of Independent Lens – Newtown – which explores the aftermath of the 2012 mass killing at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A special from the BBC follows a man who learns How to Find Love Online; a new three-part series from American Experience, The Great War, marks the centenary of America’s entrance into World War I; several moving programs recall the heroism and heartbreak of the Holocaust; Princes of the Palace spans three generations of British royalty; Frontline reveals what happens when someone spends a year eating only fish; and a multi-part program tells the exciting story of the Space Race. This month on wttw.com/playlist, look for an online conversation about Call the Midwife and modern midwifery with a student studying to be a midwife at Yale’s School of Nursing; and a feature detailing how America’s engagement in World War I transformed Chicago, to coincide with The Great War. Also, enjoy our latest digital series, Urban Nature, at wttw.com/urbannature, which “walks on the wild side” with nature thriving in three of America’s biggest cities, including Chicago. WFMT will present its third Classical Cabaret, airing live from the Chopin Theater in Chicago on the third Monday evening of the month, with the multi-talented Robbie Ellis once again serving as our host. Also live in April is the Vermeer Quartet’s annual performance of Haydn’s cycle The Seven Last Words, a Holy Week presentation from LaSalle Street Church. And for some gloriously varied springtime listening, join us for another series of concerts from Carnegie Hall, beginning with Venezuela’s Simon Bolivar Symphony. Coming up on wfmt.com, a feature on the local Grammy-winning eighth blackbird’s Matthew Duvall and the challenges of working with 100 percussionists (including Third Coast Percussion) on a new composition prior to its upcoming U.S. premiere at the MCA Chicago. It’s a month filled with exceptional content. Thanks for making it possible. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

2-for-1 Tickets to Liz Gerring Dance Company The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago concludes its 2016-17 season with the Chicago debut of Liz Gerring Dance Company performing its newest evening-length work Horizon, described as “exuberantly athletic” by The New York Times. “Horizon is a new work for seven dancers centered around the idea of density,” Gerring said. “In this piece, I endeavored to add as much as possible to the space in terms of dancers and movement. With multiple phrases occurring simultaneously, the dance takes the form of a constantly shifting universe full of activity.” With contributions from electronic music composer Michael J. Schumacher, production designer Robert Wierzel, and costume designer Liz Prince, Gerring’s work, performed under a white ceiling cantilevered over the stage, is fresh testimony to her pure, movement-driven action and exhilarating physical surprises in a constantly changing mediasaturated stage-world. WTTW members may purchase two tickets for the price of one, subject to availability, for any performance by calling (312) 369-8330 and using the code 24828. Impromptu with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet

Live from New York, It’s A New-Music Fest

Lyric Opera’s annual Rising Stars Concert features the young singers of the Ryan Opera Center. WFMT will record the concert for delayed broadcast; Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines co-host.

WFMT continues its occasional series of live miniconcerts under the title of Impromptu. The Grammywinning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will be performing at Northeastern Illinois University, and they’ll visit WFMT to preview that appearance.

Relevant Tones host Seth Boustead and producer Sarah Zwinklis revisit National Sawdust, Brooklyn’s cutting-edge music venue, to sample the latest in contemporary classical music, the culmination of an international call for scores.

Adrianne Pieczonka

Beethoven Live from the Met

The Metropolitan Opera calls Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, an “ode” to the ideals of freedom and justice. The plot also involves loyalty and love, as Leonore, alias Fidelio, risks her own safety to rescue her husband. The principal roles of Leonore and the unjustly imprisoned Florestan are taken by soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and tenor Klaus Florian Vogt; Sebastian Weigle is the conductor. Instead of an 18th-century time period, the production places the drama in an unspecified contemporary setting.

Baltic Composers on Exploring Music

Host Bill McGlaughlin and his associates on Exploring Music aren’t quite certain what it is that makes the music of the Baltic region so recognizable and compelling. The nations surrounding the Baltic Sea – Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia – have given us a wealth of composers whose music reflects a land of lakes and islands – isolated, self-contained, and full of beauty. Join Bill for instrumental and choral music from the distant north.

Aida, Huge Verdi Favorite, Live from the Met

Is there anything more purely operatic than Aida? A love triangle, a clash between two proud and ancient kingdoms, the fabulous spectacle of a victory procession with trumpets and soldiers: the whole nine yards. Hearing it without seeing it, the operalover is still mesmerized by Verdi’s wonderful music for the slave girl Aida, her officer-lover Radames, and the princess Amneris. Performances of Aida have been taking place throughout this Met season, and one has finally arrived for a Saturday afternoon, with Krassimira Stoyanova in the title role.

Vivica Genaux

The Chicago Symphony Goes 18th Century

Guest conductor Nicholas McGegan, an expert on music of the Baroque era, leads a smaller-sized CSO for a Handel concerto grosso, a symphony (sinfonia) by CPE Bach, and Haydn’s Military Symphony, #100 in G. In between, mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux, another Baroque specialist, presents a series of virtuoso opera arias from little-known works by Vivaldi, Nicola Antonio Porpora (1686-1768), and Riccardo Broschi (1698-1756). Genaux is a native of Fairbanks, Alaska, and has had a varied international operatic career, concentrating on revived operas from the 17th and 18th centuries. She’s also recorded a number of aria collections from the Baroque repertory.

Peter Mattei

The Metropolitan Opera’s Onegin

Chicago was able to hear Tchaikovsky’s lushly romantic opera Eugene Onegin at Lyric Opera earlier this season. Enjoy it again from the Met, with Anna Netrebko as Tatiana and Peter Mattei in the title role. Onegin is based on a verse novel by Alexander Pushkin, and of Tchaikovsky’s several operas, has been the most enduring favorite with opera companies and audiences the world over. The production, which sets the opera in the late 19th century, the same time it was composed, is jointly owned by the Met and the English National Opera.

Amber Wagner

More Wagner from the Met

Wagner’s first major success was the opera he called Der fliegende Holländer and which we call in English The Flying Dutchman. Based on an old mariners’ legend, with a libretto by the composer, it’s being conducted at the Metropolitan Opera by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who in 2020 will take over as the company’s music director. Of special interest to Chicago listeners is the singer portraying Senta: soprano Amber Wagner, an alumna of the Ryan Opera Center. Baritone Michael Volle sings the role of the Dutchman, and the cast also includes mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick as Mary. The setting is a Norwegian fishing village; the time, indeterminate, timeless.
