From the President & CEO Dear Member, This month, we are excited to bring you a sweeping new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel Les Misérables. This new six-part series, featuring an all-star cast including Dominic West, David Oyelowo, and recent Oscar winner Olivia Colman, tells the story of fugitive Jean Valjean, his relentless pursuer Inspector Javert, and other colorful characters in turbulent 19th century France. We hope you’ll join us on Sunday nights for this epic drama, and explore extra content on our website including episode recaps and fact vs. fiction. If spring is a time of renewal, that is also certainly true of some of WTTW’s offerings in April, including eagerly awaited new seasons of three very different British detective series – Father Brown, Death in Paradise, and Unforgotten – and Mexico: One Plate at a Time, Jamestown, and Islands Without Cars. On wttw.com, as American Masters features newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer, we profile Chicago winners of the journalism and arts award that bears his name, and highlight some extraordinary African American entrepreneurs in Chicago. WFMT will present the annual Rising Stars concert of the Ryan Opera Center, and organist Nathan Laube’s four-part international organ festival on Friday evenings, All the Stops with Nathan Laube. On wfmt.com, we’ll talk to some Grammy-nominated producers about what goes into creating your favorite classical music recordings, celebrate singers on World Vocal Day, and spotlight some classical works that originated as literature for World Book Day. This April, thank you for supporting WTTW and WFMT. Sincerely, Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

And in season 3 of Unforgotten, DCI Cassie Stuart (Nicola Walker) and DS Sunil “Sunny” Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) are confronted with a new mystery when the body of a teenaged girl who went missing years earlier is found at a building site near a motorway. As four men are placed under the spotlight, their relationships are tested to the limit.

Critical Thinking: For Orthodox Easter

Bill McGlaughlin highlights movements from Bach’s Mass in B Minor, a years-long project that includes revisions from many earlier works. Bill will revisit the sources and detail the influence this masterwork had on later composers.

Elbio Barilari samples the musical culture of South America’s largest nation, with music by the renowned Heitor Villa-Lobos, and by lesser-known 20th-century figures like Claudio Santoro, and a lateRomantic Brazilian, Alberto Nepomuceno.

In 2005, Andrew Patner put together an edition of Critical Thinking to showcase music from the Greek, Russian, and other Eastern Orthodox traditions in observance of Holy Week and Easter: a variety of choral music, plus ceremonial bells to open the hour.

Yo-Yo Ma

The Civic Orchestra Hits 100! The only training ensemble in the country that’s affiliated with a major symphony orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago was founded in 1919 by Frederick Stock, then the Chicago Symphony’s music director. The pre-professional instrumentalists who play in the Civic present free concerts for nearly 20,000 musiclovers each season, often under the direction of a CSO guest conductor. They’ve also worked under the direction and guidance of CSO music director Riccardo Muti and creative consultant Yo-Yo Ma. Celebrating 100 years this year, the Civic musicians will be joined by Ma in Dvorak’s Cello Concerto as a highlight of their gala centennial concert in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center – from which venue WFMT is delighted to be able to present a live broadcast. The guest conductor for the evening will be Esa-Pekka Salonen, who’ll open the concert with Debussy’s La Mer. The event is a co-presentation of the CSO’s Negaunee Music Institute, the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association, and the CSOA’s Women’s Board.

Nathan Laube

All the Stops with Nathan Laube A professor at the Eastman School of Music, the distinguished organist Nathan Laube has given recitals from Vienna’s Konzerthaus to Washington’s National Cathedral to the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Recent appearances have been at King’s College Chapel of Cambridge University – the inaugural recital on its restored Harrison & Harrison instrument – plus performances at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and NotreDame de Paris. He’s been a frequent artist on the public-radio series Pipedreams, and WFMT listeners will likely remember his performances during our recent Bach Project. Now Nathan is back with us, for a four-part series under the title All the Stops, which will feature his performances on a number of outstanding organs from around the world. Beginning in Germany, Nathan first seeks out organs that Bach might have known. Week Two will be mostly in the hidden organ lofts of Paris and Toulouse. He’ll then visit two Eastern European nations, Slovenia and Croatia, and the series will end by sampling outstanding organs in the USA, including the famous Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia.

Live from the Met: Puccini’s Melodrama It’s the year 1800 in Rome, and its citizens are anxiously awaiting news of the Battle of Marengo, in which the invading Napoleon Bonaparte is regarded by some as a heroic liberator, and by others as a threat. Among the former is the artist Mario Cavaradossi, and among the latter is the chief of police, Baron Scarpia. Caught between her lover, Cavaradossi, and his nemesis, Scarpia, is the singer Floria Tosca, whose great aria, “Vissi d’arte” (I have lived for art), is a major highlight of this favorite among Giacomo Puccini’s operas. It was first performed in Rome in 1900, and its settings include some Roman landmarks, including the imposing Castel Sant’Angelo. At the Metropolitan Opera, American soprano Jennifer Rowley is portraying Tosca, and Joseph Calleja sings the role of Cavaradossi, with Wolfgang Koch as Scarpia and Carlo Rizzi conducting.

More from the Met as Wagner’s Ring Unfolds and Concludes In Siegfried, the title hero acquires the famous golden ring by killing Fafner, the giant-turned-dragon. Siegfried’s next encounter is with the chief god, Wotan, and it seems to presage the coming decline of the gods and the rise to power of humankind. His final and most momentous encounter takes place when he finds the Valkyrie-turned-mortal Brünnhilde surrounded by Wotan’s magic fire. Their meeting becomes love almost at first sight. To open Götterdämmerung (The Twilight of the Gods), three Fates recapitulate much of the previous action, Siegfried leaves Brünnhilde (to whom he’s given the ring) and meets up with treachery in the person of Hagen, trying to reclaim the ring on behalf of his father, the dwarf Alberich who crafted it and later cursed it. Brünnhilde, also betrayed, sacrifices herself in the final scene and thus precipitates the destruction of Valhalla, home of the gods. As the Metropolitan Opera’s notes point out, in the earlier operas of the cycle the various supernatural beings have a strong presence, but by the time of Götterdämmerung, they’ve faded into the background: human beings take on prominence. In these operas we’ll hear two different tenors as Siegfried, Stefan Vinke and Andreas Schager respectively. Christine Goerke sings Brünnhilde, and the role of Hagen is taken by bass-baritone Eric Owens (who’s portraying Wotan in the Lyric Opera of Chicago Ring cycle). The Met’s conductor is Philippe Jordan. Both opera broadcasts will begin on WFMT earlier than usual.

For Holy Week, Passover, and Easter Bill McGlaughlin will be examining Bach’s B Minor Mass on Exploring Music the week of April 15, which coincides with Holy Week on the Western Christian calendar. To honor the whole season, a rebroadcast on Best of Studs Terkel will find Studs paying musical tribute to both Passover and Good Friday. More music for Holy Week and Easter is planned for three editions of With Heart and Voice, and we’ll also be presenting A Musical Feast for Passover with Itzhak Perlman. On Easter Sunday afternoon, we’ll play Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony with Claudio Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. And for Orthodox Easter, a week later than the Western observance, we’ll replay an edition of Critical Thinking with Andrew Patner that highlights the rich musical traditions of the Eastern Orthodox churches. Friday 19 Leila Josefowicz

From the San Francisco Symphony Our new season of San Francisco Symphony concerts finds music director Michael Tilson Thomas conducting each broadcast. (MTT will retire from his longtime post next year.) Of interest during April is guest violinist Leila Josefowicz playing a concerto written for her by John Adams. Entitled Scheherazade.2, it reflects what the composer perceives as the “casual brutality” toward women expressed in The Arabian Nights. Adams decided to write a dramatic work in which the solo violin represents a feminist Scheherazade through movements entitled “Tale of the Wise Young Woman,” “A Long Desire,” “Scheherazade and the Men with Beards,” and “Escape, Flight, Sanctuary.” When the work premiered in 2015, critics noted the effectiveness of Adams’ vivid musical storytelling. The concerto is paired with an extended suite of excerpts from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet. The following week, cellist Gautier Capuçon plays Shostakovich, MTT and the orchestra conclude with Tchaikovsky, and the program opens with a curiosity: a folk-klezmerinspired piece by the Russian-Jewish composer Mikhail Gnesin (1883-1957). It’s called The Jewish Orchestra at the Ball of Nowheresville.

Live from the Met: Mozart La Clemenza di Tito (The Mercy of Titus) is not on the list of Mozart’s Greatest Hits, but it has wonderful music just the same. Composed for a coronation, it’s cast in the tradition of opera seria, a style rapidly becoming obsolete in the late 18th century, but which reflects the kind of dignified courtly entertainment the composer evidently thought appropriate to a ceremonial occasion. The setting and time are ancient Rome. At the Metropolitan Opera, tenor Matthew Polenzani is portraying the Emperor Titus, while stellar mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato takes a “trousers” role as Sesto, the character who sings the work’s most familiar aria, “Parto, parto.”
