THE GUIDE

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT

An emotionally gripping and resonant World War II drama

SUNDAYS | 8:00 PM

April 2020 THIS MONTH

Across our platforms, watch for essential news and information, immerse yourself in drama and history programming, journey to the far ends of the earth in our science and technology specials, take virtual adventures around the city and globe, and listen for moments of beautiful music and companionship on WFMT.

From the President & CEO Dear Member, As a member-supported and purpose-driven organization, it is in times like these that we earn the public’s trust. It is our responsibility to ensure that citizens in our city and region have the information and resources they need to make informed choices. Now more than ever, we are committed to fulfilling this public media mission and hope you will turn to us in the coming days for trusted coverage and content services: COVID-19: Across our platforms, we will bring you developing news and fact-based information about this developing and critical public health issue – through our coronavirus resource hub at wttw.com/coronavirus, daily WTTW News and PBS NewsHour coverage, and PBS Kids resources for parents and caregivers. Children’s Programming: During the day on our primary channel, and 24/7 on our dedicated kids channel and atꢀwttw.com/kids, families depend on WTTW to be a trusted and safe source of educational and entertaining programming for the very youngest members of our community. During these uncertain days, I am reminded of PBS Kids treasure Fred Rogers who said: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” All WTTW kids can learn these lifelong lessons from PBS Kids characters and heroes. Arts & Drama: Just as you expect essential news and educational programming, many will also be looking for a moment ofꢀbeautiful musicꢀand companionship on WFMT, a historical documentary from theꢀAmerican Experience or Ken Burns library, a journey to the far ends of the earth onꢀNOVAꢀorꢀNature, or a virtual adventure onꢀChicago’s ‘L’. is month on WTTW, we premiere the new Masterpiece miniseries World on Fire, a seven-part British drama that follows ordinary people grappling with the effects of World War II on their everyday lives. is is one of several programs that look back on that conflict, and also the Holocaust during this month of remembrance. Explore andꢀstreamꢀall of this content as you hunker down in the coming days. For the 17th consecutive year, Americans named PBS and member stations as ourꢀmost trusted institution. Please know that WTTW and WFMT, along with public media organizations across the country, are joining with our supporters – you – to serve the needs of our community during this critical time. ank you.

Fiesta! with Elbio Barilari

Impromptu

There’s an abundance of sacred choral music for the Christmas season. Almost as much, if not quite so well known, has been written to honor Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter. Peter DuBois holds a threeweek celebration.

Valencia, a region of Spain with a Mediterranean coastline and fertile fields, has its own culture, language, and music. A week later, Elbio will bring us back across the Atlantic to sample the music of the Dominican Republic.

Two notable pianists share highlights from their latest recordings: Joseph Moog’s From Heaven to Hell, music by Liszt, and Lara Downes’ Some of These Days, exploring music from the days of slavery through the civil rights movement.

From the San Francisco Symphony WFMT brings you a new series of concerts from the City by the Bay, most of which are conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The first two focus on Stravinsky, pairing the complete Firebird ballet with the much less familiar Perséphone, with a libretto by André Gide. Narrator Leslie Caron and tenor Nicholas Phan are featured. The second Stravinsky week includes The Rite of Spring, Petrouchka, and the Violin Concerto in D Major with soloist Leonidas Kavakos. Isabel Leonard is the soloist in From the Diary of Anne Frank, composed by Tilson Thomas and inspired by the Mourner’s Kaddish and the diary itself. The last two April programs feature Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and a Mozart-Bruckner program under the baton of guest conductor Jaap van Zweden.

Live from the Met: Tosca At the time of Tosca, the people of Rome were awaiting the outcome of a battle with the forces of Napoleon. The protagonists are the painter Mario Cavaradossi, a supporter of Napoleon and of revolution; his lover, the singer Floria Tosca, distracted by jealousy; and the police chief Baron Scarpia, who’s not above torturing prisoners and indulging in sexual blackmail. Anna Netrebko sings the title role, a dramatic tour de force; she is joined by Brian Jagde as Mario and Michael Volle as Scarpia, with Bertrand de Billy conducting.

Live from the Met: Simon Boccanegra Simon Boccanegra is one of Verdi’s least-known operas, but its musical qualities redeem the rather contrived and convoluted plot, full of hidden identities and shifting political and personal loyalties. The title character, portrayed by Carlos Alvarez, is based on an historical figure of 14th century Genoa. Ailyn Perez is Amelia and Joseph Calleja portrays Gabrieli, with Carlo Rizzi conducting. The political divisions and rivalries between the two main Genoese factions make it clear that polarization in the public arena is nothing new.

Live from the Met: Turandot Franco Zeffirelli’s colorful production of Turandot is headed by Nina Stemme in the title role, with Marco Berti as Calaf, the Unknown Prince; James Morris as Calaf’s father, Timur; and Hibla Gerzmava as the faithful Liù, with Carlo Rizzi conducting. Puccini’s last opera, though vaguely based on an 18th century play by Carlo Gozzi, was incomplete at the time of Puccini’s death in 1924, and completed by Franco Alfano with the aid of Arturo Toscanini, who conducted the world premiere.

In the Spotlight

Claude Debussy

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of A Faun, originally conceived for flute and orchestra, has been arranged for any number of instrumentations. A group of string and wind players, joined by piano, harmonium, and Chinese cymbal, performed it on a recent concert by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Ravel’s trilogy Chansons madécasses (Madagascan Songs) is based on poems by Evariste de Forges de Parny, a man unusual for his time in his opposition to colonialism and slavery. The concert concludes with the original string-sextet version of Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, based on a poem about love and infidelity by Richard Dehmel (1863-1920), a work in the tradition of late Romanticism.
