From the President & CEO Dear Member, This April, we’re excited to bring you a new film from Ken Burns, who will uncover the man behind the myth of one of America’s greatest and most complicated writers. Over three consecutive nights, Burns tells the story, as only he can, of Ernest Hemingway’s life and work and his enduring influence on literature and culture. On page 4, read how Hemingway’s childhood in Oak Park influenced the rest of his life, and visit wttw.com/hemingwayevent to watch our virtual discussion with Ken moderated by WTTW’s Chicago Tonight co-anchor Paris Schutz. April also brings Earth Day, and WTTW will present The Power of Us: Confronting Our Climate Crisis, a documentary that follows a local couple educating youth about climate change; Frozen Obsession, a profile of a research expedition to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago; The West is Burning, an exploration of the root causes of the California wildfires; Troubled Waters: A Turtle’s Tale, a look at people who rehabilitate sick sea turtles; and a three-part documentary on the crusading teen climate activist and three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greta Thunberg. On wttw.com, learn about “zero-waste” lifestyles and composting in Chicago with tips on how to compost at home. WFMT will mark Earth Day with a San Francisco Symphony program featuring Losing Earth, a concerto for percussion and orchestra by the contemporary American composer Adam Schoenberg, a work evoking the effects of climate change in musical terms; and a special episode of With Heart and Voice that will celebrate the beauty and wonder of the natural world through music. On wfmt.com, listen to our playlist of contemporary classical music inspired by the earth and environmentalism, and discover a compendium of easy, eco-friendly solutions to help musicians stay green. E
rnest Hemingway’s life and fiction were filled with extraordinary experiences and locales: World War I in Italy, Paris at the height of the Jazz Age, bullfighting in Spain, safaris and plane crashes in Africa, drinking and fishing in Cuba. It’s a life explored in detail in the new three-part documentary Hemingway from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, premiering April 5-7 at 8:00 pm.
But Hemingway was born in the solidly middle-class, Midwestern, middlebrow Chicago suburb of Oak Park – a place he liked to portray as staid and stuffy. (The description “wide lawns and narrow minds” is frequently attributed, seemingly incorrectly, to Hemingway.) “Turn-of-the-century, affluent suburban life is basically the world that he was born into,” says Verna Kale, the author of a biography of Hemingway, a co-editor of his letters, and an editor of Teaching Hemingway and Gender. “His father was a physician and his mother gave music lessons, and she earned quite a bit of money as a music teacher.” Hemingway’s mother ensured her children had a background in the arts. Hemingway learned to play the cello, was encouraged in the visual arts, and wrote for his high school paper as well as creating his own stories. “He had a really nice childhood,” Kale says. 4

But Heming way was eager to leave Oak Park behind, going first to Kansas City to work as a reporter and then to Italy to drive an ambulance during World War I. He was wounded early in his service and spent several months convalescing in Milan before returning to Oak Park around the age of 20. “When he comes back from the war, he has definitely changed,” says Kale. “He wants to get out into the world and see a little bit more. Going back home is always so hard when you’re that age. We have to extrapolate a little bit from the fiction here” – stories like “Big Two-Hearted River” and “Soldier’s Home” – “but he may have felt that no one really understood what he had been through. I imagine that he got home from the war and felt like he didn’t fit in anymore.” Hemingway also seems to have felt that his ambitions had outgrown his suburban birthplace. “He wanted to do something great,” says Kale. Soon he had moved to Chicago, earning money by writing for a Toronto newspaper. It was in the city that he first began to experience a literary life. “I think that meeting Carl Sandburg and Sherwood Anderson, and getting a glimpse of that Chicago literary scene, opened up his mind a little bit and made him realize that, ‘This is a different world than the one that I’m coming from.’ ” That sentiment might explain more than anything else Hemingway’s distancing from his Oak Park childhood: he had found the world he wanted to be in, and it was
of Heming way’s goal. Liesl Olson, of the Newberry, argues in her book Chicago Renaissance: Literature and Art in the Midwest Metropolis that Heming way was addressing middle-class Midwestern women as epitomized by the popular Chicago Tribune critic Fanny Butcher in his early work, wanting to scandalize them but also enjoy the conventional approval as well as mass-market success they offered. Dame Maggie Smith
Downton Abbey Season 1 on Masterpiece The return of the most popular public television series ever! Created by acclaimed writer Julian Fellowes, the six-time Emmy-winning Downton Abbey depicts the lives of the noble Crawley family and the staff who serve them, set at their Edwardian country house in 1912. Featuring an all-star cast, including Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, and Elizabeth McGovern; Laura Linney hosts. When the Titanic goes down, Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) loses his immediate heirs and his daughter Mary (Michelle Dockery) loses her fiancé, throwing Downton Abbey and its servants into turmoil. The new heir turns out to be Matthew (Dan Stevens), a lowly lawyer with novel ideas about country life.

Exploring Music: Carl Nielsen
Fiesta
A September 2011 concert featured mezzosoprano Stephanie Blythe in One Sweet Morning, a commission by John Corigliano who commemorated the 9/11 anniversary by using poems from Poland, China, ancient Greece, and modern America.
Bill McGlaughlin takes a look at the life and music of Carl Nielsen, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of Denmark’s most prominent composers. An original and appealing composer, he wrote in every genre and composed six symphonies.
Tomas Luis de Victoria, born in Renaissance Spain, spent years in Rome as a composer, organist, and teacher. Florencio Asenjo grew up in 20th-century Argentina, emigrated to the United States, and worked as both a composer and mathematician.

O Jerusalem: Crossroads of Three Faiths Named for the classical god of music, healing, and the sun, the Grammy Award-winning period-instrument orchestra Apollo’s Fire was founded by award-winning harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell, and is dedicated to the baroque ideal that music should evoke various passions in the listeners. Apollo’s Fire is a collection of creative artists who share Sorrell’s passion for drama and rhetoric, and in this special, Sorrell and the group present music associated with Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all of which hold the city of Jerusalem in special regard. WFMT airs this program in honor of Passover, Holy Week, Easter, and the upcoming Ramadan holiday.

Renée Fleming
From the Metropolitan Opera: Rusalka This fairy-tale opera by Antonin Dvorak, with some plot similarities to The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, became an important part of the repertory of superstar soprano Renée Fleming. In 2014, she once again portrayed the title role at the Metropolitan Opera, and that performance leads off the April sequence of vintage rebroadcasts from the Met (running through June 5). The production set the work in traditional fashion, with an enchanted forest, a serene lake, and evocative nighttime lighting. Fleming as Rusalka, the water nymph who longs to be human, is joined by tenor Piotr Beczala, universally praised by critics for his interpretation of the role of the Prince – who’s actually the bad guy, since he first embraces and then rejects Rusalka, leaving her in a kind of half-human, half-underwater limbo. Mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick sings the role of the witch, Jezibaba, who transforms Rusalka but then mocks her. The romantic orchestral music, reminiscent of Dvorak’s symphonies, is led by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, whose passionate conducting was singled out by every reviewer.

From the CSO’s Archives: The First 130 Years The Chicago Symphony has assembled some retrospective programs that spotlight important soloists from the orchestra’s century-plus history, starting this month with clarinetist Benny Goodman playing Weber, Nielsen, and the novelty tune Chicago. The Hungarian-American violinist Victor Aitay (1921-2012) joined the CSO at the invitation of Fritz Reiner and was named concertmaster in 1967, a post he held for nearly 20 seasons, leading the violins and performing numerous solos, which are featured in a tribute broadcast including the Benedictus movement from Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, with its luminous violin solo. Great pianists are in the spotlight on a subsequent Tuesday: Van Cliburn, the late Peter Serkin, Ivo Pogorelich, and Murray Perahia. The Chicago Symphony Chorus was founded in the 1950s by Margaret Hillis at the request of Reiner, and its stellar performances have enhanced many a CSO concert and recording. Along with shorter pieces, the chorus-spotlight show will feature Poulenc’s Gloria (on CSO ReSound) and one of the landmark recordings from the Reiner era, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky.

Barnatan, a native of Tel Aviv who now resides in New York City, has specialized in works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert as well as composers of our own day. He won widespread praise for his CD called Darknesse Visible, with literature-inspired works by Ravel, Debussy, and Thomas Ades. Dame Jane Glover led the London Mozart Players before coming to Music of the Baroque in 2002.

From the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival Since this prestigious festival couldn’t happen last summer, our Santa Fe radio producers, Kerry Frumkin and Louise Frank, have assembled a new season of performances from the recent past that feature some of this country’s leading chambermusic performers. Three of the first four broadcasts include quintets for piano and strings: by Dvorak (with Peter Serkin), Franck (with Kirill Gerstein), and Elgar (with Jeremy Denk). There’s also music on these first presentations by Dowland, Bach, Haydn, and Bartok. Coming up later in the 13-week series will be Schubert’s String Quintet, Mozart’s Clarinet Trio, and chamber works by Korngold, Viktor Ullmann, and Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Kerry is the host for each show, with commentary from the artists and from festival director Marc Neikrug.

Angel Blue
From the Metropolitan Opera: La Bohème The Metropolitan has presented La Bohème more often than any other opera. This could probably be said of some other houses, too. The overwhelmingly popular Puccini work is beloved of audiences and has endured at the top of “favorites” lists for decades. In 2017, the Met resurrected its classic Franco Zeffirelli production, originally seen in 1981 and noted for its boisterous Act 2, outdoors at Paris’ Café Momus. The re-mounting featured the Met debut of American soprano Angel Blue as Mimi; critics were almost unanimous in their praise for her interpretation. Also making a house debut was the English conductor Alexander Soddy. The role of the poet Rodolfo, Mimi’s lover, was taken by the Ukrainian tenor Dmytro Popov, and he was singled out in reviews along with the Romanian-born soprano Brigitta Kele as Musetta.

Esa-Pekka Salonen
From the Metropolitan Opera: From the House of the Dead From the House of the Dead, based on a novel by Feodor Dostoevsky, is set in a prison camp. The inmates in these bleak surroundings divert themselves from day-to-day miseries with improvised plays and, especially, reminiscences; writing in The New York Times, critic Anthony Tommasini noted the score’s “volatile mix of restless tension and crushing boredom.” When the Metropolitan Opera presented the work for the first time in 2009, it marked the house debuts of conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and stage director Patrice Chereau. The opera itself was first performed in 1930, two years after the composer Leos Janacek’s death. The three short acts were presented by the Met without intermission, making the drama unrelenting.

Adam Schoenberg
The San Francisco Symphony: Honoring Earth Day A new radio series from the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra includes a newly commissioned work for Earth Day. Losing Earth by American composer Adam Schoenberg (no relation to Arnold) is a concerto for percussion and orchestra in three movements, reflecting Schoenberg’s concern over climate change, and also his fascination with the long history of percussion instruments, which, as he notes, go back to the very beginning of human existence. “Second only to the human voice,” he wrote, “[percussion instruments have] watched the earth endure all its phases…Losing Earth pays homage to this history.” The serene second movement, featuring a vibraphone, stands out for its portrait of the worldwide loss of coastal territories, and potentially, coastal communities, as the rising oceans encroach. The percussion battery for the work is enormous; the soloist is San Francisco Symphony principal percussionist Jake Nissley. The Romanian-born conductor Cristian Macelaru conducts.

In the Spotlight
Christine Goerke
From the Metropolitan Opera: Die Frau Ohne Schatten The title means “The Woman Without a Shadow,” and it refers to the character known only as the Empress, who is half-human and half-spirit, married to a mortal, known only as the Emperor. The work is considered one of the most important collaborations between Richard Strauss and his renowned librettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It’s an enigmatic tale, heavily symbol-laden. There are just two characters with actual names: Keikobad, ruler of the spirits, whom we never see, and Barak, the dyer, who with his (nameless) wife represent ordinary human life. At the Met in 2013, the highlight of the production, according to nearly every review, was the performance of soprano Christine Goerke as the Dyer’s wife. The Empress offers to buy the wife’s shadow, so she can become fully human and not have to be taken back to the spirit world by Keikobad (her father). The staging depicted the spirit world as a realm of light and mirrors; the human world of Barak and his wife is humdrum and cluttered. Listeners on the radio will lose the visual impact of the Falcon Scene in Act 2, which features dancing; the wounded falcon in some way represents the broken, incomplete nature of so many of the characters. But listeners will not miss Strauss’ music as it is interpreted by Goerke, soprano Anne Schwanewilms as the Empress, and the rest of the strong cast, with the orchestra led by Vladimir Jurowski.
