Air Check Dear Member, Public media has always had the unique ability to shine a spotlight on stories not often highlighted elsewhere, and cover them in unusual depth. Case in point: in a month which traditionally includes fun waterfront activities, PBS and the BBC have partnered on a three-night multimedia event, Big Blue Live, which they describe as “one of nature’s great ‘reality’ shows delivered through state-of-theart filming technologies and reports from air, sea, and below the waves.” This special focuses on the rejuvenation of the now thriving ecosystem of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California and the wide variety of marine animals who convene there annually. To learn how you can help protect animals and wildlife, visit wttw.com/bigbluelive to find out more, and to discover which sea creature you are. As August begins on WTTW11, we bid farewell (for now), to two popular British series on their season finales: Poldark and Last Tango in Halifax. There is still plenty to enjoy from across the pond – the gripping BBC drama My Mother’s Son; Downton Abbey Rediscovered, with PBS President Paula Kerger offering tantalizing glimpses of the series’ sixth and final season premiering in January; and a new season of Vicious, the uproarious Britcom starring Derek Jacobi and Ian McKellan. We also revisit season 2 of the Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Back stateside, we examine the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, and bring you an all-day marathon of Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts: An Intimate History. Speaking of Ken Burns, you won’t want to miss a new documentary exploring the making of his landmark film The Civil War on its 25th anniversary. And as the month winds down, filmmaker Rick Sebak takes us on a mouthwatering tour of America’s desserts in A Few Good Pie Places and A Few Great Bakeries. On the digital side for those of you who can’t get enough of local news and public affairs, Chicago Tonight has a new podcast – be sure to subscribe to it on iTunes. On WFMT and wfmt.com, we have four live broadcasts from the Grant Park Music Festival, featuring pianists Natasha Paremski and Inon Barnatan and violinist James Ehnes, and guest vocalists with the Grant Park Chorus. We also continue an ongoing Monday evening series from Ravinia. The American Opera Series brings us Saturday afternoon productions from the companies of Los Angeles and San Francisco (Verdi’s Rigoletto on the last Saturday of the month). From Carnegie Hall 2014-15 come Baroque-music broadcasts featuring Le Concert des Nations and the Monteverdi Choir. And the members of Chicago’s own Third Coast Percussion perform music written especially for them as part of the live Rush Hour Concerts season. Throughout August, on weekday mornings, host Carl Grapentine will bring you recordings from music festivals around the world. Finally, WFMT is your front row seat to the summer festivals around Chicago. Visit wfmt.com/summer2015 for a calendar of our live August broadcasts and more. On behalf of WTTW and WFMT, thank you for continuing to make it possible to do what we do. Enjoy the last days of summer! Sincerely,
Dan Schmidt President & CEO

Dutoit and the CSO
Los Angeles has assembled three French-inspired comedy productions based on stage works by Beaumarchais: The Barber of Seville by Rossini, The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, and The Ghosts of Versailles by Corigliano, combining fictional characters with historical French Revolution figures.
You won’t want to miss this special evening as Folkstage performers include singer-songwriters and recording artists Nell Robinson and Jim Nunally, joined by the renowned Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, recipient of a National Medal of Arts award.
Guest conductor Charles Dutoit interpreted Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring with the Chicago Symphony in an all-Russian concert that also includes Mussorgsky’s colorful Night on Bald Mountain and Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto, with the Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov as soloist.

Matthias Goerne
Matthias Goerne and Schubert A native of Weimar, Germany, Goerne made his operatic debut in 1997 at the Salzburg Festival in Mozart’s Magic Flute. He has divided his career evenly between major opera roles and the interpretation of German song literature, a subject he has also taught as a professor at Düsseldorf’s Robert Schumann Academy. From the late 2000s to 2014, he recorded a nine-CD cycle of Schubert songs and has also toured as a Schubert recitalist (including several visits to Ravinia). His recent appearance with the Chicago Symphony at Symphony Center, under guest conductor Jaap Van Zweden, featured a slightly different Schubertian dimension: orchestrations by Richard Strauss of a group of songs originally composed for voice and piano. This concert broadcast also contains music by Beethoven, Bach, and Elgar.

Daniel Sternefeld
Tuesday Night Opera Uncovers A 20th-Century Rarity The Belgian composer-conductor Daniel Sternefeld (1905-1986) turned to Hans Christian Andersen for the libretto of his only opera, Mater Dolorosa (The Grieving Mother), completed and premiered in 1935 in Antwerp. Like many Andersen stories, The Story of A Mother is less a ‘fairy tale’ than an exploration of dark emotions, in this case the grief of a mother who has lost her child, and sets out to challenge Death himself. The recording of Sternefeld’s nearly-forgotten work is by the Royal Flanders Philharmonic and the Zeffiretti Choir of Antwerp.

Jordi Savall
Baroque Music from Carnegie Hall A major theme of Carnegie Hall’s 2014-15 season was Baroque Unlimited. Several visiting ensembles explored unusual aspects of Baroque music including Le Concert des Nations led by conductor and viol artist Jordi Savall. Savall’s theme for Carnegie Hall was music composed for the glittering French courts of kings Louis XIII and Louis XIV, including works by Lully, Couperin, and Rameau. Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists brought the Carnegie audience a monument of the very early Baroque era, Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, also known as Vespers of the Blessed Virgin. The program book for this late-April concert called Monteverdi a “path-breaking genius of the early 17th century” and noted that the Vespers are “quietly contemplative and joyously ecstatic, bringing an operatic sensibility for the first time to sacred music.”

Grant Park Music Festival Grand Finale: Elgar Sir Edward Elgar’s most famous sacred choral work is the mystical oratorio The Dream of Gerontius. Less known are The Apostles and that work’s sequel, The Kingdom, which focuses on the lives of Jesus’ disciples and the beginnings of the early Christian church. Elgar assembled the text himself, using mostly the New Testament’s Acts of the Apostles but also quoting from the Gospels. Principal soloists represent the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, St John, and St Peter. Carlos Kalmar will conduct the Grant Park Orchestra and its chorus in The Kingdom to conclude the 2015 summer season.

Collectors’ Corner: Re-Introducing An Historic Recital In 1940, the Hungarian-born violinist Joseph Szigeti was joined in recital at Washington’s Library of Congress by his newly-emigrated friend and countryman, composer-pianist Bela Bartok. They played works by Beethoven, Debussy, and Bartok himself; the recording first appeared in 1960. Henry Fogel presents a new reissue of it (on the Pristine label) as part of his Collectors’ Corner series. Jed Distler wrote about the performance: “While neither artist was completely satisfied with the concert, their intense, communicative playing makes these works sound as if they’re being improvised on the spot. In Bartok’s own Second Sonata and First Rhapsody, the musicians stress the music’s frequently overlooked lyricism and speech-like accentuation…[This live performance has] vibrancy and inner freedom.”
