The Guide
Dear Member,
The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625
For more than fifty years, our members and viewers have made our Saturday and Sunday night dramas and mysteries among the most viewed programs on WTTW. As we head into the end of summer and beginning of fall, we’re excited for this tradition to continue as we present highly anticipated new drama and mystery series, new digital content, and a new e-newsletter especially for drama lovers. I hope you are settling in to the fourth season of Unforgotten and the new hit series Professor T about eccentric professor turned criminologist Jasper Teerlinck. In August, we’ll bring you two new seasons of the popular mystery series Midsomer Murders. Watch as detectives John Barnaby and Charlie Nelson team up with forensic pathologist Kam Karimore to follow the bizarre twists and turns of some baffling homicides in the deceptively serene English county of Midsomer. On wttw.com, we’ll examine Chicago’s most unusual unsolved mysteries, from murders to the mundane, and go behind the scenes of Unforgotten, Professor T, and the upcoming Guilt. And please visit wttw.com to subscribe to our new weekly email “Dramalogue” just for drama fans. You’ll also find drama on WFMT this month. During our Saturday afternoon Opera Series, we bring you Richard Strauss’ Elektra, based on a tragic story from ancient Greek mythology; Jules Massenet’s Manon, a bittersweet romance originally set in 18th-century Paris; The Demon by Russia’s Anton Rubinstein, supernatural terror mixed with human tragedy; and Richard Wagner’s Parsifal, a tale of medieval knights guarding the Holy Grail. On wfmt.com, delve into one of the enduring dramas of classical music to discover the real relationship between Mozart and Salieri. As always, thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

A LOOK AHEAD AT THE
Dramas & Mysteries By DANIEL HAUTZINGER
PBS FANS LOVE MYSTERY, but they might not want the fates of their favorite dramas to be shrouded in secrets. COVID-19 scrambled schedules as filming was delayed and production postponed, but many of the best dramas and mysteries are finally on their way to screens this summer and fall.
Cassie and Sunny are ever-so-slowly closing in on the truth in the case of a long-missing man found dead in a scrapyard as the fourth season of Unforgotten comes to a close. (The final two episodes premiere Sundays, August 8 and 15 at 8:00 pm on WTTW.) Another season is already in the works. Meanwhile, the neurotic Professor Jasper Tempest continues solving crimes and frustrating his colleagues in another two episodes of the English version of Professor T. (Sundays, August 8 and 15 at 9:00 pm on WTTW). 4

COMING TO WTTW
Things get a little more whimsical in two new seasons of Midsomer Murders airing this month. On Sunday, August 15, you can spend the day with DCI Barnaby and DS Nelson as they tramp around the English countryside solving crimes connected to a book fair, magic show, folk festival, and winery in season 17 of the long-running series. Keep up with Barnaby and Nelson Fridays beginning August 20 at 8:00 pm as they dig into body snatching, UFOs, competitive cycling, and more in season 18, which introduces an engaging new pathologist. Good news: there are more seasons of Midsomer Murders to come. Usually Masterpiece mysteries follow the people trying to solve a crime, but in the case of the new drama Guilt we know exactly what happened from the very beginning. Coming in September, Guilt tells the story of two brothers who end up being the perpetrators of a hit-and-run on their way home from a
wedding. As they become further and further enmeshed in their deceit, the niece of the victim, a private detective, a nosy neighbor, and even the mob get involved. Suffice it to say that things get a little out of control. That dark saga of cynicism is succeeded by warm stories of humanity when Call the Midwife returns for its tenth season in October. We last saw the residents of Poplar enjoying a circus over the Christmas holiday while Sister Julienne laid plans for an expansion of Nonnatus House. As 1966 progresses, Sister Julienne and Doctor Turner come into conflict over private healthcare. No matter what debates occur, however, the midwives never stop offering the best possible care in every aspect of life to their complicated, utterly human patients.

Grantchester may not have made it to its tenth season yet, but with Will Davenport firmly in place as vicar of the picturesque village, it holds steady as it enters its sixth season. Will has made a momentous decision regarding his vows as a priest and undertakes a destructive path alongside Geordie in the new season, according to the show’s creator, but it sounds like the season is the tortured Leonard’s to hold, with a big plotline coming for him. An airdate for the season has not yet been set, but filming wrapped in April of this year, so it is in progress.
date has not been set, but add the show to your I-can’t-wait-to-watch list. Like Van der Valk, Baptiste is entering a second season of gritty, psychologically complex mystery. In the wake of the startling revelation and tragedy of the first season, Julien Baptiste has pushed his wife away while enduring personal torment. He finds distraction in a high-profile case in Hungary, when the entire family of the British Ambassador disappears in the mountains there. With the second season currently airing in Britain, a U.S. release date is sure to be announced soon. Also in the offing is another season of All Creatures Great and Small, which delighted audiences at the beginning of this year with its tales of veterinary mishaps and small-town adventures. On Sunday, August 15 at 6:30 pm, the cast and creators of this new version of a cherished classic revisit their favorite moments, remember the late Dame Diana Rigg in her role as Mrs. Pumphrey, and look ahead to the possibilities of a second season. Speaking of a second season – and a third! – it was recently announced that
Sanditon, the adaptation of Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel that aired on Masterpiece in 2019, has been renewed for two more seasons. The first season ended in suspense, so audiences will finally be able to learn what happened to Charlotte and Sidney and their budding-but-doomed romance. The cast gathered for their first script read-throughs in July, so it will be a while before the new seasons hit your screens, but we’re sure they will be well worth the wait! And finally, there may not be any more seasons of Downton Abbey coming, but the hit series does have another film on the way. Filming is expected to wrap soon, and the latest news is that Downton’s second big-screen treatment is due out in March of next year. That might seem like a long time to wait, but don’t worry: you’ll have plenty of drama and mystery on WTTW to tide you over until then. To keep up to date on all things drama and mystery, Masterpiece, and more, sign up for our new weekly Dramalogue e-newsletter at wttw.com/dramalogue.
Jyuddah James, Rose Williams, and Crystal Clarke, Sanditon
Soon after Grantchester finished production, Van der Valk started filming its second season in Amsterdam, in June of this year, after more than a year’s delay due to the pandemic. The troubled Van der Valk and his motley team keep up their work investigating murky murders in cloistered subcultures, from an alternative community to the diamond industry to the world of classical music. This film by Ken Burns chronicles the life and career of boxer Jack Johnson, the first Black heavyweight champion and one of the greatest fighters of the 20th century. Johnson ultimately lost his title in a bout in Cuba in 1915, after fleeing the United States following his federal conviction for allegedly violating the Mann Act, a Progressive-Era law intended to crackdown on commercialized vice but used against Johnson to create an example against, to quote the prosecutor, “the evils of miscegenation.”

Live from the Grant Park Music Festival Christopher Bell will conduct his Grant Park Chorus in From Ireland with Love on the first of this month’s live programs from Millennium Park. The concert will combine traditional Irish favorites with motets by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford and contemporary composers. On the 6th, conductor Carlos Kalmar is joined by violinist Augustin Hadelich in the concerto by Jean Sibelius; also hear Symphony No. 1 by Tchaikovsky, including Winter Dreams. The festival’s Family Night presents favorites by Offenbach and Grieg plus Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals, featuring pianists Ashley Kim and Colin Song. The German city of Dettingen was the site of a 1743 battle in which a combined army of Englishmen, Hanoverians, and Austrians defeated a French army. To celebrate, George Frideric Handel was commissioned to write a Te Deum which will be featured on the final weekend of this year’s festival; also enjoy music by Mozart and Gabriela Lena Frank. All broadcasts are hosted by Dave Schwan.

Birgit Nilsson
From the Swedish Royal Opera: Elektra The title role of Richard Strauss’ Elektra is a demanding one. Using a libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, its original source is a tragedy from ancient Greece by Sophocles. Elektra’s mother, Queen Klytemnestra, has killed her husband and put her lover beside her on the throne. Elektra wants revenge for her father’s death but needs the help of her long-lost brother, Orestes, whose unexpected arrival midway through the opera is one of its most dramatic moments. Soprano Birgit Nilsson (1918-2005) was an acclaimed specialist in Wagnerian and Straussian roles; this is her 1965 performance at the Swedish Royal Opera in Stockholm.

Pretty Yende
From the Paris Opera: Manon A beautiful young girl runs away from her convent with a dashing young nobleman to live la dolce vita in Paris – an affair that does not run smoothly. Both Jules Massenet and Giacomo Puccini took inspiration from the 18th-century novel L’Histoire du Chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by l’Abbe Prevost, and this performance from early 2020 is of Massenet’s version. It features South African-born soprano Pretty Yende in the title role with Benjamin Bernheim as her cavalier, Ludovic Tezier as her opportunistic brother, and Roberto Tagliavini as Des Grieux’s conservative father. Dan Ettinger conducts the Paris Opera Chorus and Orchestra.

From the Opera National de Bordeaux: Anton Rubinstein’s The Demon This rarity from the Russian repertory is staged by the Opera National de Bordeaux. Noted pianist and composer Anton Rubinstein wrote The Demon in 1871, based on a poem by Mikhail Lermontov, a poet-novelistpainter and pioneer of the Romantic literary movement in Russia. The Demon (Nicolas Cavallier) falls in love with a mortal woman, Tamara (Evgenia Muraveva), whose lover is killed on his way to their wedding. Tamara is tempted by the Demon but repelled at the same time; she enters a convent but finds herself unable to resist his continued presence in her life. Paul Daniel conducts the Bordeaux operahouse chorus and the Orchestre National Bordeaux-Aquitaine.

Nikolai Schukoff
From the Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse: Parsifal Richard Wagner’s Parsifal premiered in the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in 1882, and for many years was performed nowhere else, on the composer’s orders. The plot is based on medieval legends of the Holy Grail, a sacred artifact that is supposed to have been guarded by a group of specially consecrated knights. In the opera, the knights have been corrupted by sin and can be redeemed and healed only by a “pure fool,” which is what the name Parsifal means. At the opera house of Toulouse, France, tenor Nikolai Schukoff portrays Parsifal and mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch sings the role of Kundry, a mysterious woman who both serves and mocks the Grail knights.

Angela Yoffe and Vadim Gluzman
From the North Shore Chamber Music Festival Happening each June at the Village Presbyterian Church of Northbrook, the North Shore Chamber Music Festival was founded by violinist Vadim Gluzman and pianist Angela Yoffe. As the fest looks forward to presenting its second season of Onstage/Offstage concerts at PianoForte Chicago in September, WFMT is pleased to air one of the concerts from this summer, on the theme Stars of Tomorrow: Romance from France. Gluzman and Yoffe were joined by a number of rising young performers for a program headlined by the Piano Quintet of Cesar Franck (1822-1890).
