Air Check Dear Member, The Chicago area has long been renowned for its rich and eclectic music history. This past October, we were excited to bring together some of the Chicago area’s most iconic “garage” bands of the 1960s and ’70s for an unforgettable evening in our own Grainger Studio. Cornerstones of Rock: American Garage premieres this month on WTTW11 for a once-in-a-lifetime “jam” in front of a live audience of enthusiastic fans. This special concert reunites members of the American Breed, Buckinghams, Cryan’ Shames, Ides of March, McCoys, New Colony Six, Shadows of Knight, and Standells. Join us to hear some of your favorite music from the era, which includes a nostalgic trip down the late Mitch Aliotta’s “Lake Shore Drive.” As the holidays approach and the snow begins to fall, make the most of the season with WTTW. Enjoy a new Celtic Woman concert special from Dublin, we’ll revisit a popular program featuring The Carpenters, and travel expert Rick Steves joins us to explore Christmas traditions in Europe. On the history front, the six-part series Ancient Roads: Christ to Constantine traces the origins of Christianity and a new documentary on Pope John Paul II highlights his role in the liberation of Poland from Communist rule. Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes takes us inside two Great Houses, and we gear up for the eagerly anticipated final season of this addictive British drama series with a salute hosted by actor Hugh Bonneville. WTTW’s digital offerings include new episodes of Chat, Please! that bring you behind the scenes of Chicago’s culinary and dining notables, and fun and quirky videos that let you know all about “The Good Stuff.” As we do each December, WTTW11 brings you the star-studded National Christmas Tree Lighting and a variety of holiday music programs, including the annual New Year’s Eve celebration with the New York Philharmonic and a tuneful evening at New York’s Rainbow Room with singer-pianist Michael Feinstein. Watch all of this, and much more, on TV, on demand, and online on desktop and mobile – we’re there for you anytime and anywhere you happen to be. Visit wttw.com/anywhere to learn all the ways you can access our content. On WFMT, we’ll present a live broadcast, hosted by Peter Van De Graaff and Roger Pines, of the world premiere of Jimmy López’s opera Bel Canto from Lyric Opera of Chicago. Saturday afternoons, delight to the Metropolitan Opera, with live broadcasts of La Boheme, Rigoletto, The Lady of the Lake, and The Barber of Seville. And we’ll play specials for Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s, including the New Philharmonic Orchestra from the McAninch Arts Center live on the afternoon of New Year’s Eve, and Rich Warren’s New Year’s Eve Midnight Special that evening. See page 22 for a roundup of holiday programming. And be sure to visit wfmt.com for daily stories and news from around the classical music world, and listen to WFMT on the go via our new apps for Apple and Android. On behalf of all of us at WTTW and WFMT, I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season. Sincerely,

Dan Schmidt President & CEO

The Metropolitan Opera Returns Barbara Frittoli, Ana Maria Martinez, and Ramon Vargas star in Puccini’s La Bohème to lead off the 2015-16 season of live Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts on Saturday afternoons. Also this month we’ll be hearing Verdi’s Rigoletto, a Michael Mayer production that updates the action to 1960 and transfers its setting to a Las Vegas casino. Less familiar music operatic fare is on hand in Rossini’s La Donna del Lago, which will star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in the title role, and for the Christmas holiday weekend, the Met brings us an English-language version of some much betterknown Rossini, his Barber of Seville starring Isabel Leonard as Rosina.

Saturdays, 12:00 pm

All prerecorded music on 98.7WFMT is provided by the Richard and Mary L. Gray Music Library.

Most live performances on 98.7WFMT are broadcast from the Fay and Daniel Levin Performance Studio.

World Premiere from Lyric Opera Peter Van De Graaff and Roger Pines co-host this live broadcast of Bel Canto, based on the novel by Ann Patchett that was a literary sensation. Now, in a new work curated by Lyric Opera of Chicago’s creative consultant, Renée Fleming, the riveting story inspired by a real-life event has become a powerful opera, with music by the rising Peruvianborn composer Jimmy López and a libretto by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Danielle de Niese stars as the American opera singer invited to sing at an international diplomatic gathering that turns into a hostage crisis.
