From the President & CEO

The Guide

Dear Member,

The Member Magazine for WTTW and WFMT Renée Crown Public Media Center 5400 North Saint Louis Avenue Chicago, Illinois 60625

Renowned chef, restaurateur, and author Marcus Samuelsson is passionate about the cuisine of America’s diverse immigrant cultures. This month, he returns with a new season of No Passport Required, where home cooks and professional chefs around the country share how important food can be in bringing us together around the table. Join us at 9:00 pm on December 20 for Marcus’s first stop, as he explores Seattle’s Filipino culinary traditions. And, in December, WTTW will be hosting a related food tour event and creating digital content for you to feast on. The tour event and stories will focus on a remarkably diverse half-mile stretch of a single Chicago street (Lawrence Avenue between Western and California) with a selection of restaurants owned and run by immigrants, representing a variety of cuisines: Filipino, Vietnamese, Bosnian and Serbian, Venezuelan, Korean, and Greek. This short stretch reflects the incredible diversity and strength of Chicago and its immigrant communities in microcosm, and we are excited to celebrate it in the coming months. For details, visit wttw.com/nopassportrequired. Also on WTTW, music icon John Legend plays Jesus Christ Superstar, in a production that landed him his EGOT (as an Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony winner). A new special marks Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary; and among WTTW’s many holiday specials, don’t miss Lucy Worsley’s 12 Days of Tudor Christmas. On wttw.com, celebrate the holiday season with a roundup of seasonal events around Chicago, and dive into the latest Call the Midwife Holiday Special with our recap. WFMT will present a new special, Whole Notes: Music of Healing and Peace, in response to America’s gun violence epidemic and related to WTTW’s FIRSTHAND: Gun Violence documentary series that follows Chicagoans impacted by gun violence. Hear a variety of festive music for the December holidays, including the live Lessons and Carols from Cambridge University during the day on Christmas Eve. Also, Metropolitan Opera performances resume, and ring in 2020 with our New Year’s Eve Midnight Special. On wfmt.com, wrap up the year with coverage of Chicago’s musical holiday traditions, and as the 2010s draw to a close, take a look back at what they held for classical music. Finally, WFMT staff and hosts will share their musical New Year’s resolutions for 2020. Happy holidays from WTTW and WFMT! Sincerely,

Sandra Cordova Micek President & CEO

WHEN

Thursday, December 12, 1:30 pm

WTTW is partnering with the Chicago Public Library, Beverly Branch, to present two brief documentaries from the POV Shorts series. In Mr. Smith’s Peach Seeds, meet Roger Smith, a retired Tennessee meter reader and cattle rancher. One day in 1968 during a break from work, Roger ate a peach and when he was finished, took out a pocketknife and carved the peach seed into a tiny pig. Forty-three years later, Smith has carved hundreds of peach seeds into hummingbirds, stingrays, gospel choirs, villages, even a baseball stadium with more than a hundred figures. “Given enough time,” he says, “I don’t think there is anything you can’t make out of a peach seed.” Also on the bill: Earthrise, which tells the story of the first image captured of Earth from space in 1968. Told solely by the Apollo 8 astronauts, the film recounts their experiences and explores the beauty, awe, and grandeur of Earth against the blackness of space. But for most African Americans, this era represented a new nadir. Yet as slavery intensified, so did resistance. From individual acts to mass rebellions, African Americans demonstrated their determination to undermine and ultimately eradicate slavery in every state in the nation.

Sunday 8 EARLY MORNING 12:41 African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross – Into the Fire (1861-1896) (Part 3 of 6) This episode examines the most tumultuous and consequential period in African American history: the Civil War and the end of slavery, and Reconstruction’s thrilling but tragically brief “moment in the sun.” After Emancipation, African Americans sought to realize the promise of freedom-rebuilding families shattered by slavery; demanding economic, political, and civil rights – even winning elected office. 1:48 African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross – Making a 8

Way Out of No Way (18971940) (Part 4 of 6) Learn about the Jim Crow era, when African Americans struggled to build their own worlds within the harsh, narrow confines of segregation. The ascendance of black arts and culture showed that a community with a strong identity and sense of pride was taking hold in spite of Jim Crow. “The Harlem Renaissance” would not only redefine how America saw African Americans, but how African Americans saw themselves. African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross – Rise! (1940-1968) (Part 5 of 6) This episode examines the long road to civil rights, when the deep contradictions in American society finally became unsustainable. As the movement scored one historic victory after another, non-violence was still often met with violence – until finally, enough was enough. In 1968, Dr. King, the apostle of nonviolence, was assassinated, and that tragic event unleashed a new call for “Black Power” across the country. African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross – A More Perfect Union (1968-2013) (Part 6 of 6) After 1968,

African Americans set out to build a bright new future on the foundation of the civil rights movement’s victories, but a growing class disparity threatened to split the black community in two. Yet African Americans of all backgrounds came together to support Barack Obama in his historic campaign for the presidency of the United States. When he won in 2008, many hoped that America had finally transcended race and racism, but it is clear that many issues, including true racial equality, remain to be resolved. How will African Americans help redefine the United States in the years to come? • Daily Radio Programming Programmer’s Picks New York Philharmonic Jukebox: Winter Holiday

Itzhak Perlman’s Hanukkah Radio Party

Alec Baldwin hosts a super-eclectic broadcast from the Philharmonic’s archives: some Nutcracker, winter pieces by Vivaldi and Leroy Anderson, song arrangements, and an historic Bernstein performance of Poulenc’s Gloria.

The Israeli-born megastar violinist Itzhak Perlman highlights his favorite music for the Jewish Festival of Lights: choruses from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus to musical celebrations of candles, latkes, and dreidels.
